NBA Legends Explain on How John Stockton Schooled Everyone 

I worked for the Utah Jazz for several years, including during the 97 and 98 NBA Finals against the Bulls. Game 6 of the 98 Finals, he pulls up in a minivan, loads up three kids in his arms. I'm walking in the building behind him and with those three kids in his arms, he holds the door open for me so I could walk through. Nicest guy off the court you could ever meet. Brilliant with a basketball in his hands.

John Stockton is the definition of hard work and fundamentals. A true legend.

Stockton had 3 seasons where he averaged at least 13.5+ assists and at least 3.0 steals a game. That's insane. In 19 seasons he played all 82 games 16 times. 1st in total assists with the next closest being 3k assists away. 1st in steals with the next closest being 500 steals away.

Hated Stockton and Malone as a Bulls fan, but man he was a complete player. Doesn’t get nearly the credit he deserves. He’s my number 1 PG.

Watching Stockton set screens was something else. He would sneak in behind guys, their team mates wouldn't expect the point to set the pick so they wouldn't warn them, and they would run blind into Stockton like he was a brick wall. 7 footers would get embarrassed by that and try to fight Stockton. I've seen it happen multiple times. I once saw Stockton screen 6 foot 11 Elden Campbell so hard that Elden came up swinging and the look on his face was like he was about to cry.

I believe Stockton may be the most underrated player in NBA history. I can't think of many guys that were on his level that no one ever really talks about.

For me Stockton is the best pure PG ever. Not flashy like Magic, and no rings but a player that holds the all time record in assists and steals should be in the conversation of one of the top 20 players in the history of the NBA. There are 5 mayor stats. He leads in 2 of them. He, Malone and the 90s Utah Jazz were a joy to watch. Greetings from Uruguay and thank you Sean for your work.

I watched almost every single Jazz game from 86-2002. There was and will never be a player as hard-nosed, disciplined, pass first minded, and humble like John Stockton. We will never see the tenacity and strength and effort for every play like we did with Stock.

Its amazing to me that this man gets so little respect from so many people and he leads two of the five major categories in NBA history. How can he not be considered the best point guard?

As crazy as it sounds, he’s underrated. That guy was a killer on the court and then looks like that guy in the suburbs that mowing his lawn in the morning.

As a Bulls fan I absolutely hated playing the Jazz. Especially, Stockton. The man was a near perfect basketball player. His is the only jersey I own that isn't a Bulls jersey. That is how much I respect the man!

I met John Stockton once, super nice guy and massive hands. Much better athlete that you can imagine. Super quick and strong.

I played against Stockton when he was a Gonzaga Prep High school basketball player. One thing I can tell you about those "Catholic" high school basketball players is there TOUGHNESS!! They weren't the most athletic players in the country, but PHYSICAL and TOUGHNESS wise they were BADASS high school players!! I played for the RICHLAND BOMBERS down south of Spokane, but went up every pre-season and played SHADLE PARK , ROGERS , and GONZAGA PREP and those Catholic kids from Spokane were TOUGH, TOUGH players!! The thing that set John Stockton apart is his MIND and his WILL TO WIN!! Stockton worked harder than nearly anyone else and he got BETTER and BETTER every year in high school, College, and each year in the NBA!! Hats off to John Stockton!! Love the BASKETBALL TIME MACHINE!! I rank John Stockton as the BEST PURE POINT GUARD to ever play the game!! Its hard to place Stockton over MAGIC, because they were different types of point guards!!

Thanks for the dunk clip. I'm a diehard NBA fan at 45 yrs old. To see Stockton dunk iced the cake. I never liked him or Utah but always respected them even back to the Jeff Malone and Thurl Bailey and Darryl Griffith days. Stockton is definitely one of the greatest point guards EVER.

Hornacek is another underrated point/shooting guard from the era. Very hard working and hard nosed defender, opportunistic and consistent shooting guard and never close to the biggest guy on the floor. Fun fact he also red shirted (Illinois I think) played all 4 years too! Love hearing about all my old hooper heroes.

Stockton looked like a car dealer, no fancy clothes or style…just the well played fundamental bball. Most underrated PG on NBA. I know he still play on weekends at Gonzaga University court and still playing hard. I love his bball.

John Stockton was one of the best to ever do it. He was great to watch for me. I like hard nosed guys that just got it done. He is so underrated and it's a shame that he has become somewhat forgotten by the NBA fans. He was as complete as a basketball player as it can get. Not flashy but I loved the grit and scrappy nature with which he played. Even though it's rare nowadays, I like to see guys stick it out with one team and I always liked that about Stockton.

I'm from the same hometown as John Stockton and the city has a lot of love for him. He also played at our local Gonzaga University so you know people been knowing who he is for a long time. Our only NBA team in the state though was the Seattle SuperSonics so you could imagine the real rivalry and torn emotions when they played the Jazz. Damn I miss the 90's, everything about it from music to movies to basketball to just being a kid and loving life.

It's a little sad that the NBA today has fewer star players like John Stockton who retire without ever changing teams.

John is the NBA all time leader in steals and assists. Way ahead of the #2. Also, only missed a few games in his entire career.

Im one of the few Jazz fans here in the Philippines during the Bulls 90's era. Always loved how Stockton exemplified old school basketball. Bird, Stockton, & Bill Russel my top 3 favorites.

I remember watching Stockton play in the day. With the ball or on D, he always made the correct decision when he was in the right spot. And he was always in the right spot.

Stockton has a very real argument for the best PG of all time. Not saying definitively that he is, but that he has to be seriously recognized as having a part in that conversation. No one since has come close, and there have been some excellent point guards since then.

Stockton to Malone. There’s a childhood memory.

Greatest PG of all-time. Also, an Ironman. He only missed 14 games his entire career. His assist to TO ratio is the best too.

If my memory serves me, he had NO agent either. The man negotiated his own contracts and never held out. Skilled man, with amazing parents, who raised the man.

Stock was/is my favorite NBA player ever. Oh and that dunk was at the Karl Malones basketball camp. I was there in person as a kid. It was like 1992 time frame in Bountiful, Utah. I loved seeing it again.

Thank you for the video, Sean...and it is my birthday, literally. My 10 year old son who is just getting into hoops asked me recently who my favourite player of all time was... he asked if it was Jordan, KG, or even Iverson and i say, Nope. I asked him to look at my shelf of figurines and what does he see. He was totally stumped when he saw the NBA Mcfarlane Basketball Series 2 - John Stockton figure which i had.... He asked me about it and i explained to him that i watched one NBA highlight clip when i was a teenager and such things were hard to come by, here in Singapore, back in the late 80s. I saw Mr. Stockton double teamed, trapped, falling out of bounds on the baseline and yet, he threaded a bounce pass along the base line to a Jazz team-mate who scored. It was at that point which i absolutely fell in love with basketball. Mr. Stockton is my favourite player because of all the traits which you highlighted in this video - his intelligence, mental & physical toughness, team only mentality and endurance - the exact same things which i had told my son that day. Once again, thank you for the video, Sean. It made my day.

Brother, thank you. This was an amazing review over a man which in my opinion is the ideal point guard along with Magic, and I hated him. I'm a Knicks fan and I bleed blue, and the things I watched him do and even more so live was mind blowing. It's like he didn't know he was the smallest player on the court, just like A.I. This beautiful game would be on a whole different level if most players had John Stockton's grit, and heart for the game. Eternal respect for one of the Greatest to lace them up.

My favorite pg of all time. All time leader in steals and assists and still people don't talk to him as one of the best pgs. If I ever have to make the team that imo would destroy everyone it would be Stockton, MJ, Hakeem and 2 good defensive team players that don't need the ball to much and can shoot when needed or when they are open.

Can't go wrong with Stockton. He makes everyone better. Underrated defender and really efficient scorer too!

I started watching Stockton ‘90/‘91 time, he ALWAYS stood out to me

I was best friends with John in grade school at St Aloysius school off Mission St in Spokane. We hung out a ton- had sleepovers- everything. We would be up at night until at least 11pm on the weekends and we would be playing hoops. He lived for it. Moved away after a few years out of the city... Met up with John at SCC when we played in Summer Leauge Basketball just before he left to play for the Gonzaga Bulldogs. He was so quick, strong and and blew past most defenders with ease. Strong as an Ox for his size.

He knew his physical shortcomings compared to other players so like anyone who has the will to succeed he developed every facet of his game he could excel in to the most elite level possible. A model professional and a legend

Of all of the basketball greats from the past, none is more disrespected by modern fans than John Stockton.

He's the only member of The Dream Team that could go out to any restaurant and not be accosted by autograph and selfies with fans. What has to be recognized is he was the captain. The floor geneal. On a team with a top 5 all time scorer in The Mailman. Even Karl knows who got him more than half of those points. The greatest setup man in the history of the backcourt. Mr John Stockton.

In the 90’s, as a kid from Chicago-Michael Jordan was like a real life Superhero to me, and the Bulls seemed like the “team of avengers”… But, Stockton+Malone were the ‘EndGame-Supervillains’ that made you really, _really_ nervous.

A couple of things. I think Stockton was a lot of fun to watch. Very creative. I also thought all the players (interviews) in this post were fabulous ball players. Stockton was very steady and very strong. Players like Stockton, Nash, Steph are a little like drugs or something. Once you see them, you cannot get enough. I have never taken drugs. But if anyone offers me an Allen Iverson, I'll probably accept.

I remember a game in which Rasheed Wallace committed a really hard foul on Stockton. Jerry Sloan was so mad that he ran onto the court swearing(a lot of F words) and was ready to throw punches at Wallace. Rasheed had the most surprised look on his face. I think that Sloan was the perfect coach for Stockton. He was very protective of his star point guard.

Sometimes you see people say'" This is the best channel on youtube". I've said it myself at times but THIS CHANNEL is the best channel on RU-vid as far as entertainment. People who called John Stockton dirty were players that couldn't handle is amazing skill.

Stockton is my favorite player of all time. 90s Jazz were incredible to watch.

I would put Stockton #2 or 3 among Point Guards in terms of overall success. However, in a vacuum, I'd say he was the #1 PG ever (even over Magic and Isiah) because despite Johnson being the better rebounder and Thomas being the better one-on-one scorer, Stockton was the best defender, most efficient/distance shooter, and dominant screen-setter while at least on par if not better than the others as a playmaker. If Stockton were put on those Bad Boy Pistons or Showtime Lakers, he probably would have won 2-5 titles having so many more perennial All-Star players to pass to because all NBA Dynasties have had at least 3, if not 4, such star players (Dumars/Rodman/Laimbeer/Aguirre or Kareem/Worthy/Wilkes/Nixon/Cooper/McAdoo). Furthermore, if Stockton were given the green light to shoot like Steve Nash, he would have been just as dominant as a score-and-pass PG as the 2-time MVP BUT WITH STRONG DEFENSE.

I'd say that John Stockton is the 3rd best pg I've ever seen behind Magic and Isiah. And even though Jason Kidd, and Steve Nash were great in their own right, I gotta put Stockton a bit higher than them. But if it wasn't for injuries Penny Hardaway, woulda been one of the GOATS, period, and not just in the pg position!

Stockton is the best pg ever and no one else is even close. Magic was a better player, but as a PG, there's Stockton and then there's everyone else on a different page.

Stockton was so much of a G that he accomplished all he did without having ANY off hand dribbling ability. You knew he couldn't drive left, and he still got what he wanted on the floor.

I hated John Stockton. I hated Karl Malone. I hated Jerry Sloan. Horny was fine. I just hated the Jazz as a Rockets fan from the 90s battles. I find it perfectly acceptable to talk about Malone because it's an off court thing, but with Stockton? As much as i hated him, i hate it even more how much he gets disrespected basically because he's a great white player. It's happening to all 80s and 90s players, but It happens to every white player x10. You're not allowed to be great and you get compared to someone far more athletic and showy and it makes no sense because you can do that at any position to any player-but jumping higher and dribbling cooler does not make you better. It's not street ball. John Stockton earned the respect of everyone who faced him no matter what skin color just like Larry. Yes he was dirty, but Gil brings that up to discredit him in general with nothing good to say about his game and 80s and 90s players overall. You see it happen every generation, the hate was happening in Gils decade while Nash and Dirk were winning MVPs and you see it happening in this generation while Luka is dominating stat sheets and Jokic is dominating entire teams and winning MVPS and a ring. In 20-30 years they will trash this decade of bball because those slow white boys couldn't play in the 2050's! Matt Reaves can't touch Jeff Hornacek, but Reaves getting overhyped for half a season of being serviceable while Hornacek gets hated on for being the goofy white guy guarding Jordan-oh, everyone today could score 50 on the 90s white boys! Utah is too slow and white! LeBron would have swept them etc etc, yet those old white boy Jazz wrecked Robinson and Duncan in 5 and sweeping Shaq and 3 all stars before getting to the 98 Finals. Handed Shaq and 2 all stars a gentleman's sweep the year before. Put some respect on John Stockton and those Jazz teams. You don't win that many games in the entire decade because your competition is weak, you win that much because you're that damn great. They were an awesome villain to root against. There is one man i always believed would be an Excellent NBA Coach. I was a Bulls fan so the Jazz was the Team that scared me in the 90's. Stockton and Malone man...Two seriously in the Best Duo in NBA history. Stockton was a Master tactician. He really was a Floor General.
