i think the reason why people dont like the nba now is because its catered to teenagers and kids and absolutely excludes grown men and veterans.. the league is 99 percent young guys and we have never seen that before.. in the 90s it was grown men playing baskeball not teens vs teens in every game... we have some teen phenoms but it wasnt catered to children like it is now.. also the players are extremely immature and dont carry themself like fathers.. back then these dudes no matter what their personal vices were behaved like fathers when the media was infront of them
I'm not going to lie this game looks better than today's game because everybody's shooting three-pointers all day ..this game is much more physical then today's game
@@binary if it’s overrated, why were the interest and ratings so much higher? Why did the nba have millions of “casual” fans? As a kid I knew plenty of moms and grandparents who knew Jordan, ewing, Hakeem, shaq, Reggie Miller etc… Today that demographic doesn’t knows anyone aside from Lebron, and most view him negatively. The league has lost the casual fan. The ratings are shit. No one cares. You can say this era is overrated, but fan interest says you’re dead wrong. The nba peaked in the 1990s. Highest rated finals by FAR in 1998. Crushes todays ratings. We’ll NEVER see those days again. No body gives a shit anymore.
@@dapper892 because Jordan was a huge figure along with Magic and Bird. I'm talking about the actual film/play, you're talking about ratings. If quality was defined by ratings, Beyonce would be the best musician of all time. what a stupid argument. so your grandma watched? oh really? that means the product must've been great lol. dumb dumb dumb.
LJ's final season before his back gives out. Also, his ability to post up and back down Barkley is incredible, considering how strong Barkley was. LJ was a strong and explosive player in Charlotte.
I forgot how good Larry Johnson was at this time. Like a young, strong Barkley with an older, seasoned Barkley bag. That sucks about both of their injuries.
Man I loved LJ, especially in high school. And my favorite college team was that UNLV squad. People just don't realize how hampered he really was with his back.....
TOTALLY AGREE!! Larry was a bonified Hall of Fame talent , but the bad back reduced him to less than a quarter of what we actually saw for most of his pro career. He deserves props just for playing as long as he did with that " shot" back.
Not underrated. Cmon. Number 1 pick. Part of one of the most iconic college teams ever. Huge shoe deal and promotion. He had injuries and it’s a shame. But he was still one of the most iconic names of the 90s despite not living up to potential.
@@dapper892grandmama Larry Johnson! Haha. He had the promotions, he was definitely a rock star. Growing up in Orlando the teams I was most hyped for as a kid outside the magic were the bulls, hornets, spurs, & phoenix in that era. I also loved the Dominique hawks just slightly before that era. But yea all the kids loved Larry Johnson
This is my era… bro these brothers was the cream of the power forward but the round mound of rebounds was getting up in age & injuries… love LJ my dawg
I would rather watch these past games than any of today's NBA games. Look at the guys posting up, playing physical defense, and hitting a three pointer here and there
I loved watching Phoenix back then. All stars in the top five. Larry Johnson (Grandmama) was outstanding on every team. What a time those were in the NBA
Barkley was a wild boi… picking up girls and kicking them out of his car and fighting ppl on a regular basis if he said something he didn’t like and throwing them out of windows! It’s crazy how nice and funny he is now… U probably couldn’t even ask him for an autograph? 😂 he still loves to gamble in Vegas and bet on sports tho LOL
Because they were able to play some sense of physical defense. More competitive, more passion, more exciting. Dude out there playing with a bad back. No way today's NBA it's happening. 😂
I was at this game watching from the sixth row. And now remembering seeing his son (Stephen) play in that same building 17 years later, I feel incredibly old having seen his dad Dell play at this game.
thanks for this upload...rare game...that dunk by LJ though at 4:10 damnnn. if only his back didn't give out smh. that 95 Hornets team was really good tho
I missed these bruising battles down lows inn the 1990s with power forwards like Malone, Barkley, Shawn Kemp, Oakley, Johnson, Mason .. etc .. Current NBA emphasizes more on shooting mid-range and shooting 3s.
if only LJ didn't have those back issues... i still liked his game even though he lost his explosiveness. he still stayed in the paint (but did shoot the occasional 3) and didn't shy away from contact. you couldn't stop his fadeway
Back injuries are DEVASTATING. Larry at this point is still effective but the back injury returns and LJ performance suffered immensely. Turning his career to the Gale Sayers fate: injuries cut short what would have been won of the greatest players to ever play any position.
@leftslayer4364 that just shows who your goat is yall bring up lebron on every basketball post this is a game played when lebron was 11 years old and his name comes up 😂😂😂😂 I love it
They definitely didn't get along both tried to be recognized as the main captain plus Zo wanted the big money payday like LJ got from them he didn't get it from them so all of that is what led to the big fight
@@courtneylee-nh4vw where in my comment did I say Zo wanted to leave Charlotte...I said he wanted the payday like LJ got from them and didn't get it so he plus his agent and the team eventually agreed on a trade with the heat. Yea at one point before the money issue came about they did try to make it work.
@@MDBBallThat’s fair. Keep them coming please! I’m hoping you have more of those NBA on NBC extended intros from the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons especially for these two games I’m looking for: Rockets vs Suns 12/25/93 Spurs vs Rockets 4/9/94 Knicks vs Hornets 4/17/94 Sonics vs Blazers 4/24/94 Sonics vs Nuggets 12/25/94 Super Rare Rockets vs Bulls 1/22/95 Super Rare
Coming out of UNLV Johnson was my favorite player. He was excellent and it’s a shame that him ZO and Gill couldn’t figure it out. It’s crazy that Barkley was one of my favorites too. Both players done in by a bad back. By the way you never heard of LJ fearing anyone
You know that meme with the Hornets starter jacket that says everybody had that jacket and we don't know why, well number 2 is reason. Sheeesh I forgot how much of a beasty he was before the back injuries really kicked in.
If Larry Johnson didn't hurt his back he would've made the nba 50 greatest players list and helped Ewing win a title with the Knicks. That's how good he was in his prime.
Danny Manning was interviewed in this after his injury. Had he stayed healthy Suns might have beat the Rockets and the Spurs or Suns win the 1995 title.
It's possible they could've gotten by the Rockets (the Rockets winning that series was a miracle in the first place) but if Barkley still ends up getting hurt they probably would've lost in the wcf regardless.
@@ChrisM07 Manning provided an additional scorer (taken the load off Barkley as well) to KJ and Barkley who in tandem would have owned the combination of Chucky Brown, Pete Chilcutt and Robert Horry at PF and/or SF. The Suns were down a 20-10 guy in the playoffs and the replacement for Ceballos when Manning got hurt. When AC Green was dominating and going off in one of the games the Suns cruised to victory, that's what Manning could have provided on a nightly basis in 1995. Now barkley may not have remained healthy regardless but a 50% barkley, with a red hot KJ and Manning had a good shot of beating the Spurs in the WCF if they beat the Rockets. The Spurs were David Robinson...somewhat rodman (Hill mismanaged him and it cost him IRL) and a collection of mid-tier players around them. Spurs were punching way above their weight thanks to Admiral.
@@scottb3034 That Spurs team was pretty good they led the league in fast break points so they had the ability to keep up in the open court style of play. Barkley even admitted in halftime of the finals in G3 that if they had gotten to the wcf he would've been too hobbled to play the entire series more than likely he would have to sit out games if that were the case. Remember that even without Manning the Suns still could've knocked out the Rockets in G5. They uncharacteristically missed numerous free throws that game including towards the end of regulation when Barkley missed 1 of 2. If he had hit both the Suns would've been up 3 and the Rockets probably would've had to throw up a desperation heave instead of what actually ended up happening. The Rockets were definitely beatable that year the Spurs and Magic should've won G1 in their series against them too free throw misses also costed them like it did the Suns.
that was barkley that played the entire season without manning and the playoffs without manning. there is no guarantee he would have been hurt or hobbled if DM played all year. In the real world where Manning got hurt that applies, not in this what if scenario. As for your second paragraph, agree. Can't disagree with any of it. @@ChrisM07
😢damn, I really miss real men's bball. If I knew that the NBA was going to be fill with soft cotton candy Katz, I probably would not have every watch basketball in the 80s/90s, saving my heart from being broken generation later.
Larry Johnson was at one time the highest paid player in the NBA: 10 years 84 million. Then he went on to have 8 kids with 8 different women. A few years after number 8 he started to plead poverty in order to reduce the child support payments...
Loved the heart, leadership and steadiness of LJ when he came to the Knicks, but the way he was here and previously with Charlotte was borderline unfair. Incredibly athletic, strong and explosive with a wide array of skills. That debilitating back injury robbed him and us of more grandmama tomahawk slams. If I recall correctly he was injured in Jordan's charity game that summer.
Watching these 2 monsters (and Alonzo!) battle makes me miss 90's basketball. Something about the strength of these 2 guys makes me look at today's players as being a bit soft.
The NBA was SO MUCH BETTER IN THE 90s. Players back then had passion to win that NONE of todays players have. Now today you've got no defence no positions every guy plays the same way and players have all the room they want. PATHETIC
