This lakers team was badass. Grizzled vets in Scott and Worthy plus some young guns led by a savvy and guile magic johnson. To me, magic taking this team to the finals was one of his finest accomplishments considering the age and injuries + new coach that he dealt with.
Rest in peace the announcers: Dick Enberg and Steve "Snapper" Jones. The memories those 2 gave me announcing NBA games, as a die hard Knicks fan in the 1990s as a kid are great. And the Portland Trailblazers who have died: Cliff Robinson, Jerome Kersey and Kevin Duckworth. Who would have thought that Magic Johnson who was diagnosed with a DEADLY incurable HIV virus in 1991 would outlive them all and become a super successful businessman worth 1.2 BILLION dollars. The guy is truly Magic)
as a laker's fan this blazer team really scared me. They were loaded and just got unlucky, coming up against the Bad Boys, Magic's lakers and then Jordan.
It's crazy to think this was Portland's best team, where everyone was at the peak of their prime and they were never able to put it together to win at least one title. Goes to show how short of a window a good team has to win and why its so important to take advantage of it while they have it. One game can change everything.
This Portland team was loaded.. if u look at the west in the 90s it was always just stacked n a gauntlet to get through. The East usually had 4-5 good teams but the west was 1-8. All good teams.
Thats true, but still the east teams won and barely lost games in the finals against the west teams: 89 Detroit 4-0 90 Detroit 4-1 91 chicago 4-1 92 Chicago 4-2 @@TheSands83
@@eyalsabag1772 East can grind but western teams have to grind on and off the court as well. Longer plane and buss rides. Less time to sleep while eastern teams are rested. We don't call it the easy east for nothing.

Imagine if this Portland team had 27 year old Arvydas Sabonis on it's roster! That team would have been that much more fun to watch and would maybe have a couple chips!
They were just missing a interior scorer in the halfcourt from 90-92. Clyde as their offensive leader had a shaky jumper and limited go to moves 1 on 1. Terry Porters jumper blew hot and cold. Once the pace of games slowed Portland really struggled to score in the halfcourt.
In between there 90 and 92 NBA finals appearances, was this 91 Blazers team, that was probably there best team during that 3 year stretch. They had the best record in the entire league in a time where Michael Jordan was arguably at his absolute peak, and the Bulls would obviously go on to become 1st time NBA champions. The Blazers were a very good team with a great player in Clyde Drexler as there #1 guy, but they weren't quite good enough to overcome a 3 year stretch where they lost in the finals to prime Isiah and the vintage bad boy Pistons, Magic Johnson in the last year of his prime and the somewhat under dog Lakers and obviously prime if not peak MJ and the defending champion Bulls.
21 assists in a road playoff game at age 31…. Anyone that wonders why and how Magic was the MVP runner up in 1991, that’s why (He was still technically reigning MVP as Jordan didn’t receive the award until 2 days later)
@@kik5323He wasnt washed but this wasnt the real Showtime Lakers. They played at a slower pace. This was actually a minor upset to beat Portland that year.
What about all the NBA Finals losses that Portland had (Getting swept by Detroit in Portland 3 straight) in 1990 and losing to the Bulls twice in Portland in 1992? Those don't count as playoffs?
There is 80s stuff on the channel, but there is a lot of 90s. The golden age of basketball when it was at the height of its popularity was around the early to mid 90s, imho.
I do have some clips from the 80s posted but it's just that I have more games from the 90s also in better quality. But yes hopefully some 80s games to come thanks
Request: 1993 Utah Jazz game on NBC, I'm not sure who they faced (maybe the Suns?) but I believe it was the final game to use the 1990-1993 graphics package
I think about 90% of the time, the better team will win a 7 game series. This series is one of those series that represents the other 10%. Portland was the better team, but for whatever the reasons were, couldn’t get it done.
Rockets were very lucky those two years. They played 8 decisive games in 2 years. That's not dominant at all. Just for comparison the Detroit pistons the two years of their reign played just one decisive game.
@@georgestamatakis697 I remember when they tried to say the same in 1995. Yet most tends to forget the ref who wrongfully ejected Drexler. Giving the suns the early series lead. The calls against Drexler were so bad they had to pull the ref from the series. They were able to prove the ref had a grunge against Drexler. Hey remember the Jazz clock incident in 1994 vs the Rockets. Yet still lost. Just a few things some will forget about 1994 and 1995.
@@georgestamatakis697 Remember Shaq in the 1995 finals. You can debate shaq should've fouled out in three out of the four games. The refs kept bailing Shaq out. This includes game one. Shaq shouldn't have been playing in the fouth quarter and overtime. That series should've ended sooner than it did. Considering they got swept. Yet hey let's blame it all on Nick Anderson.
@@JamesHardenoverKobe13 I could argue that Hakeem wasn't called for three second violation numerous times plus numerous fouls on block attempts. Rockets were lucky.
Most players begin declining at around age 30. It was more pronounced back then with the more physical play. But even today, you still see it with modern players. For example, Lebron has 4 MVP's and 6 All defensive teams. Guess how many he has had since turning 30? ZERO and ZERO.
