Here's an extended excerpt from a Halloween broadcast of the Today show on the NBC Network (as, in Chicago, would have been seen over WMAQ Channel 5); this is directly from the network feed, so there are no local commercial breaks or station ID's, and the black where these would have been inserted has been taken out for ease of viewing. The hosts are Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley.
Includes:
Tail end of promo for "MacArthur" (voiceover by Casey Kasem)
(32 seconds of black edited out)
Tom, Jane and Gene Shalit discuss Halloweens past and present including Brokaw's remembrances of tipping over outhouses as a boy in Ravinia, South Dakota
Promo for "The Other Side of the Mountain Part 2" (voiceover by Casey Kasem)
(32 seconds of black edited out)
8:30am (Eastern time) segment starts, with news items including:
- Western Airlines crash in Mexico City
- Blizzard hitting Great Plains states and part of Rocky Mountains
- Recommendations from a commission investigating Three Mile Island accident
- Richard Arrington elected first black mayor of Birmingham, AL
- Latest trade deficit blamed on high oil imports
- Roger O'Neil report from Elgin, IL on mortgage rates including a shot of Elgin Federal Savings; interviews with realtor Joan Rich, and homeowners Ken Sweet and Lucille Sweet (a sweet couple)
Commercials for:
Birds Eye Oriental Style Rice (with Rosalind Chao of M*A*S*H fame)
Georgia-Pacific (in Tyler, TX)
Complete denture cleanser/toothpaste
Bob Ryan's weather forecast (before Willard Scott joined the program)
Phil Donahue, Live in Chicago, and members of his audience interview Howie Gordon (1979 Playgirl Man of the Year) and wife Jeremy (?) (apparently they wouldn't stay married for much longer), and executive editor of Playgirl Magazine, Dianne Grosskopf
Promo for Quincy and Kate Loves a Mystery (voiceover by Casey Kasem)
(31 seconds of black edited out)
In next segment, Jim Brown, in Hollywood, reports on the history of Dracula in the cinema; featuring more recent Draculas George Hamilton and Frank Langella, and former Dracula Christopher Lee
Commercials for:
Reynolds Aluminum (building products to restore old homes)
All the King's Men chess "lite" game - from Parker Brothers
Alpo dog food (with (?), done Live, and featuring a starving dog)
In next segment, Gene speaks of new "Nosferatu, the Vampyre" movie, then a woman provides a Shalit pumpkin head as part of a promo for new book by Ruth J. Katz, "Pumpkin Personalities"
Commercials for:
Ovaltine (voiceover by Fred Foy)
Sta-Puf concentrated fabric softener
Schwinn bicycles (with international skiing champion Jean-Claude Killy)
Jane speaks of her coming 6-day trip to Japan as program closes
Promo for Diff'rent Strokes, Hello, Larry and The Best of Saturday Night Live (voiceover by Casey Kasem)
This aired on local Chicago TV (and across the nation) on Wednesday, October 31st 1979 within the 8:20 to 8:58am (Eastern - 7:20 to 7:58am Central) time frame.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The MCCTv (FuzzyMemoriesTV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s to early 80s, mostly) recorded off of TV (in Chicago or other cities now too); things which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. If you have any old 1970s videotapes recorded off of TV please email: tapes@fuzzy.tv Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to digital, please e-mail tapes@fuzzy.tv Thank you for your help!

Great footage. I used to watch the morning shows on Halloween for all the fun talk and events. A few still do it but not all. I was just at a estate sale that had a lot of old news footage from Tom Brokaw. I grabbed a couple but a lot of the tapes were beta max, and I do not have a player for those.

Jane Pauley got her big break working at WMAQ w/ Floyd ( Big Tuna ) Kalber in 1975. Less than one year later she was chosen as Barbera Walters replacement as Today co- host. At aged 25.

Jane Pauley had - to use a technical term, "poise out the wazoo". ;-)

It was thus ironic that, for a few years, Mr. Kalber soon left 'MAQ to do the news updates on Today for a few years alongside Mr. Brokaw and Ms. Pauley.

Wonder who that is doing the live Alpo spot. She's definitely the same person who brought out the Gene-o-lantern

I'm curious, myself, now that you mention it . . . if it were Ed McMahon doing it, no doubt Johnny Carson would have been on standby had the dog been uncooperative . . .

Interesting that two former Today co-hosts have gone on in differing capacities to CBS. (I speak, of course, also, of Ms. Pauley's successor's successor on Today, Katie Couric, and her short-lived run as anchor of the CBS Evening News.)

The Donahue segment appears to have been taped Thursday September 26th 1979. The segment aired after most of the country could have seen the complete show in their cities.

Thanks. Interesting to hear them remind us just how big the Coneheads were then. The segment on vampire films was also compelling, although it is not true that Herzog's Nesferatu was a "shot-for-shot remake" of the original. It's always nice to see how mature the Today Show seemed before you started getting all the fake grinning and smarminess and perkiness in the early '90s.
