Allow schools to set aside funds for the student athletes, at the end of their career in college sports pay them the set aside money. The amount of money can be small as long as it accounts for the long period of time students commit to college sports. The problem with apportioning money to the most effective players is that it’s a self-repeating cycle, where those players who have a ‘full time job’ can nearly completely abandon their school career. Whereas, other athletes have to focus on school. Also, how do you judge the effectiveness of a defensive lineman? There would be no fair system to apportion money to athletes proportionally without unfairly being biased by offensive players and bigger names, which get more scoring/stat sheet opportunities.

They should be paid a lump sum after they graduate commensurate to their time and the financial benefit they provided the school.

I got paid for being an undergrad TA. This did not make me focus less on my classes just because I was getting paid to do what I like to do (teaching). It is ridiculous that people are using this argument to justify not paying athletes.

Their pay should accrue throughout their time at University, and be distributed once they graduate. This way they will still have incentive to work hard in school.

My cousin plays college football. He said “the educational benefits are bullshit”. He gets less time to study for tests. The only thing he got was a full scholarship. He had to buy his own books, and other supplies. He also had to buy his own computer.

Working at a university I can tell you why. each program on campus has o pay for itself. So on my campus, men’s basketball pays for all the other sports programs, men and women. Personally I don’t think sports should be on college campuses. It helps out about 100 people, but takes by far the largest land mass, utilities, and required “activity fees” that put the rest of the students in debt, to fund a sports training camp.

why do people have such a problem? Predominantly young black players from not great backgrounds getting paid for what they do. I believe south park made an entire episode around this.

College Athletes should be paid. It is because of their hard work why coaches are making so much money.

As long as they are making money off of the backs of these students they need to be paying them. If they believe the money would be distracting from education put it in a Trust that can only be accessed after college.

I believe college athletes should be able to receive endorsement deals and money from sponsors (from coaches, higher-ups, etc). If there’s a will, there’s a way. It’ll take time. NCAA has always been about profiting and they use education as some scapegoat. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I do think that NCAA athletes have way more going for them though. Their potential is sky high. With their student-athlete background, there’s plenty they could venture into.

The only ones arguing that college athletes shouldn't get paid, are non-college athletes so they would not understand the struggle of being an athlete and student.

I believe that college athletes do get paid in some ways. Scholarship money and special benefits are already received by many athletes at different schools. Since many athletes get full rides, or partial scholarship, it is essentially like they are receiving compensation to cover expenses for their schooling to participate in a collegiate sport. This is already more compensation than most college students receive in the first place. If they can receive a free education and degree while playing a sport that they most likely enjoy playing anyways, then they should not need to be compensated with a salary. It could be thought as an unpaid internship, where they can look at the opportunity to play a sport in college can get them a degree, and also prepare them to go professional one day where they will get paid. Either way, scholarships can get them a free education. They should not be paid a salary for playing a sport in college, but scholarships and other benefits need to be provided for their hard work and time spent in practices, games and work outs.

I know a person who wanted to play softball for TCU, but backed out of it because the coach wouldn’t let her go on the Pre-Med track. Maybe payment in the form of an annuity or a retirement plan. Maybe some kind of semester bonus to more than cover the cost of living and expenses and give them some spending money. I’m torn on this one. Because yeah. The cost of a 4+ year college can be off the charts. So if they’re getting full rides that’s awesome. No student debt when they finish! But at the same time they’re extremely undervalued for their talents and abilities.

When I went to school, there were student work positions: e.g. I worked in the audio visual department. I got paid a low rate for the 20 hours I would work each week. I understand that athletic directors would have to make difficult decisions as to whether they would offer a higher rate to students in different sports. This could mean schools that offered Division I sports in lacrosse or field hockey, would have to cut those programs and promote club lacrosse or club field hockey instead. So not only are schools able to make decisions about who they want playing for them, it balances out other sports that do not bring as much revenue. So it could mean a football player at Alabama would work 20 hour weeks at $80/hr while a lacrosse bro at Johns Hopkins would work 20 hour weeks and make only $20/hr. Endorsements would be allowed but it would go directly to the school's athletic program to help fund other sports. With this model, expect to see students make more demands and see players transfer from one program to another, similar to how we see professionals in the work environment. It is a given that all student athletes that got in would be given a full ride as well as if the athletic director plans to cut the program it would honor that agreement and allow the students to study free of charge.

It’s a amazing that Muir who makes money reporting on athletes does not think the athlete he reports on should not be paid.. not very bright and the AD from Stanford who also gets paid for managing athletes does not want them to be paid but gets a bump in his salary when Stanford football wins not rowing. No one would accept these terms in their employment but they want these kids shame on the adults. Lastly it’s amazing how ncaa talks about education but has not suggested anything like granting these athletes 3 years of academic eligibility beyond their playing days to help them get the most from their college experience since the kids earned it. Student athletes must be paid or atleast colleges shoukd take care of their expenses. In John Olivers special I saw in 1 case a student athlete did not even have money to buy food. Thats disgusting when NCAA is making $1 Billion in revenue. Even if they can't be paid market rates still a minimum wage and all their personal expenses like a set amount on clothing, shoes, entertainment, food must be paid to them. A couple things: College athletes are CHOOSING to play sports and this CHOICE has positive and negative drawbacks. The good: get partial to full college tuition covered while still having the opportunity to get a degree, um $15-$50k/yr IS a salary. The bad: have to work harder to achieve high level of success in both academics & sports (how is working harder bad when you are getting to do what you love?). Every choice someone makes has to assess the trade-offs. If students WANT to play sports and get tuition covered to do so, they also have to assess whether the potential hit in GPA is worth it. For the players going professional, it is often worth leaving school a year early to sign with a team, and that is their choice to make. Sorry, but I completely disagree with this video's attempts to make a case for student athletes to make some 'real' money... because often, they already are via their educational opportunities. Look at minor league players- often barely scrape by and may never make it big. They additionally may not choose to get a college education, and certainly don't have a direct opportunity to do so while tied to their minor league careers. College students are already often times paid [tuition costs] more than these players who also are potentially more talented individuals. Minor league players sign contracts just as collegiate athletes do. Is everyone forgetting the 'free' hype and advertising a player gets by being put on film or the cover of a game? Maybe the NCAA should charge the player for being their agent. I fail to see how college athletes have a leg to stand on here.

To solve this is really simple. Do not pay the college athletes, but let the college players make money off of their name. For example, Duke wouldn’t be paying Zion directly, but Zion will be able to make money from Nike, Gatorade, and etc., if they sign him. Everyone wins!

They should get paid by their cgpa pointer result. The higher pointer the higher the salary. That way the student can focus more both in the court aswell as in the class.

They do get paid. Paid with scholarship, free travel, free professional training, better food than anyone else, free clothes and shoes. That's like 75k in free money regular students pay for but get nothing out of.

I think players could get incentives for advancing each time they win like a gaming tournament. That way it will help them pay off some of those loans.

they can’t pay them because of title 9, they’d have to pay everyone the same amount. so imagine the heisman winner being paid the same amount as a walk on female lacrosse player. the thing is most players aren’t good enough to go pro anyway and that’s the only way they’d be able to get a free ride to begin with. everyone in college isn’t zion williamson who is a lock for the nba, most wont sniff the league so what about them? they’ll be lucky to make the g league or play overseas, most will not be 1 and done, they’ll be there all 4 years, so if those guys can get a free education where they can make money after school that’s good too right? so the schools and the ncaa can’t pay them, so they should allow the players to make their own money. they’re not allowed to accept gifts or get a job and that’s ridiculous. if someone is popular let them accept endorsements, do commercials, do appearances, etc. that way the big stars can monetize their value.

They get scholarships to go to those schools and those scholarships pay for most of their classes and books. I know this because I was an athlete for a college.

Every college inflates athletes grades, even for small sports and schools. The time commitment is huge, but so is working your way through college, and what student hasn't responded I needed more time to study before? Hard to have sympathy

Why they are not paid? They are not professionals. These athletes have free tuition. NCAA just decided to allow schools to pay athletes. You will see Big schools become even more dominant. Will grades be an option? What requirement will the athletes have to the university?

Most Universities are Government institutions and subject to federal and state laws. Under law amateur athletes are not allowed to be paid. It is that simple. Most are supported with educational incentive. I had a four year scholarship for athletics and I was paid with room and board, free schooling, extra tutoring, job help, and clothing from the school and its agencies.

The framing is very biased. Whether someone deserves to be paid and should get paid are very different questions.

I think a pay the players model really looks like is make sure they aren’t homeless, make sure they aren’t starving and without food of nutritional value. Allow them to get scholarships and make a small percentage off jerseys. Basically they have to market themselves. I understand that there isn’t enough money. But relaxing the rules is all that’s needed. Also don’t force players to go to school for X amount of years to go pro. If forces a system of poverty. If coaches want to buy them lunch let them do that.

There are 480,000 athletes and if you include staff and volunteers that makes NCAA possible, that number goes to more than 3 million people. 1 billion divided by 480000 = 2000 dollars 1 billion divided by 3 million = 300 dollars So you would get anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per season if it was distributed more evenly. I'm sorry but you aren't getting Le Bron's salary in NCAA.

Time commitment for college athletes is too much for regular school studies. It's pretty much a full time job for them. Either pay them, let them get endorsements or sponsors, or lower the time commitment.

How about receiving pay after their college career is over? Any money earned through endorsements could be withheld until their eligibility has expired or declaring themselves eligible for their respective drafts. The schools could double the stipends they pay the athletes and pay everyone of them who leaves the school, early or not, for services rendered on a pay scale according to performance and contribution. Even 4year scout team members deserve something.

These athletes aren’t forced to attend these universities, you can go pro in any sport without attending college. They go there to showcase their talent against other athletes. If they so chose they can sit out the waiting period their particular sport requires. We don’t pay doctors to go to school and they serve a much greater purpose in the world than athletes.

Sports are big in the United States, but this NCAA connection to schools and universities need to be disconnected. Yes kids need the sports, but they should not become part of the high tuition cost problem when universities are charged so much for this. If they make so much revenue, be don't charge universities for the cost of sports and keep tuition rates at a reasonable level.

I guess it's hard tbh. In my heart, I think student athletes should get paid. In my head though, it's more complicated. Should all student athletes get paid, regardless of sport? I was a NCAA athlete, but volleyball wasn't generating anything for the school. Basketball and football are the main drivers of profit. Should a student athlete, who gets 0 playing time, get money? It's just complicated. Women's program don't generate money for schools usually either. Would this mean they wouldn't get pay?

Maybe... top 2 revenue making programs can pay their athletes 5k a year but they are forced to pass 80% of the classes they take? I don't know.

If they don’t pay them, then don’t make them sign up for so many clases per semester. Let them pick two classes maximum & then they’ll have time to study even if it takes them 1, 2, or 3 years more to finish. This way, maybe they won’t be so occupied that they don’t have time to sleep or study after or before practice/games.

Putting them in the category of being amateurs just adds more insult to injury. I think they should be paid a set rate maybe have a cap of 100,000 a year even though they may be worth more than that to the university. So there would be more of an incentive to either go pro or finish their education.

Pay in room and board. All athletes are guaranteed food and shelter, you can also throw in textbooks cause those are the other big expense. Then they should be allowed to make money off their images, autographs, jerseys, appearances etc. And then you also have strict rules on academic eligibility that is regulated by some government entity so that schools don’t try and cheat the system with “paper classes”. Food and lodging is always the biggest expense and the image income is icing on the cake. Also throw in limitations on how much time can be spent in practice, they’re students first and should never spend more time playing sports than studying and in class

So many cons to paying players that people don't realize or think about. You start paying players, get ready to say good bye to scholarships, free tuition, free housing, etc... Also, if you start paying players, don't whine when they're dismissed after they get injured. They'd be employees, not students. In my eyes, the only logical route would to adopt the Olympic Amateurism Model they talked about. Due to the discrepancy between most players and popularity, allow them to get paid off of their likeness, sign shoe contracts, sell autographs and memorabilia.

People tend to not know this but college athletes get scholarship checks per month like 1500 or 1600, plus your getting a free food , gear, and shoes so what you spending 1600 in a month on

Not only are these kids not paid. But the NCAA does not allow these kids to get money from other sources. I think they should get paid because not all the D1 football and basketball guys will go to the NBA or NFL. And the avg career length is not that long, it’s 3yrs in the NFL. If you pay them in college at least they have 6 yrs pay to invest or save.

Not paid? I grew up in a collage town and have seen what goes on. No, athletes aren't paid like a paycheck. But they do get an awful lot of perks. I had a friend whos family owned the best tailoring shop in town. All of the collage athletes who shopped there had their purchases (including $1,000 suits) put on the Collages tab. New cars (that were H.S. graduation presents from their parents). Off campus rent paid. My grandmother was a hostess at an exclusive restaurant where they just signed for the meals and it was billed to the Collage. And who knows what they get from the Alumni Associations? And , of course, all tuition and living costs paid.

Student athletes spend four years being coached and honing their craft. That's an education of sorts. I wonder if that got factored in?

Maybe this wouldn't happen if America didn't have such competitive university sport programs. If these kids are good enough to entertain the whole nation, then why don't they go pro? Why isn't there a league that they can play in instead of being held hostage by a university, neither getting a proper education, nor any compensation for the entertainment service they provide. They should be paid based on how much the school brings in from ticket sales, Jersey sales and any money made from Any media and divide it by all athletic teams in their school program so that high performers earn and low performers earn the same amount. doesn’t matter if the best makes the same as the worst it’s like a participation trophy every one gets one. High profile schools would obviously make more than a low profile schools but wouldn’t the best of the best want to play for the best and earn more..so during collage application time they can decide where would they make the most

Be honest with yourselves, if you got paid a good amount for playing any sport in college , you’d be a lot more more focused on the sport itself, trying to train your body and physical mind to pursue this in the future instead of what you’re majoring in and that’s not what colleges want.

I feel like they should be able to sell autographs, sign endorsements, etc. but paying them is not a good idea. Only a handful of schools could afford to pay their student athletes and it would most likely only be for two sports. These athletes get a free education, free meals, free trips across the country, and many other benefits. That is more than enough for the majority of college athletes. High school players play for the love of the game, if you don’t want to do that don’t play.

Some athletes argue that they can't benefit from the "education" because they don't have the time to study. My easy solution for that would be to have fewer games/high stakes events then. You know what hindered my "education" while I was in college??? Ohh that's right an actual JOB because I was paying for tuition.
