March Madness is one of the biggest events in American sports. Sixty-eight college teams get invited to the Big Dance, but by early April, there's only one team left. The tournament may be about upsets, underdogs and uplifting narratives, but it's also about the money.
The NCAA's Division I men's basketball tournament draws in millions of viewers and rakes in more than $800 million each year from its television deal alone. That makes up more than 75 percent of the association's yearly revenue. But it's not just the NCAA that makes money. The coaches are often the highest-paid public employees in their state, and gamblers also stand to make big returns on risky wagers. The NCAA did not return CNBC's request for comment.
Watch this video to find out more about the money behind March Madness.

Did you watch the game or do you just talk out of your ass? There were more bad calls in UCF’s favor than Dukes. The clean block by Cam Reddish that was called a foul that forced him on the bench. The missed call on Tacko which would’ve been his 4th foul on Zion. The ball that didn’t hit the rim and UCF was awarded the 2 points after review.

Lucus Assanti none of those were more obvious than the missed charge against Zion and the pushoff by RJ when it mattered. Lmao people really act like athletes don't get paid. Ok, here is what students get now - $200,000 education (if they choose it) - Between $1,000-$5,000 dollars as a stipend (Each school is different but can offer up to $5,000 according to NCAA rules) - Free housing - Free meals - Free clothes/gear - Free tutoring, books, school supplies etc. All of this is free for student-athletes. People who really want student-athletes to be paid are simply uninformed and ignorant about how the NCAA and collegiate athletics works. In 2014, the NCAA did a study and found out that all but 20 schools LOST money on collegiate athletics. So, contrary to popular belief, collegiate athletics don't make money. Why is this you may ask? Because all of the schools literally don't make money and have sports just to have sports or because they take all of their revenue and pump it back into the athletic department. But noooooo still pay the kids with nonexistent money. Ok, let's explore that route then. If you begin paying the kids, all students across the nation will have to be paid equally or else this opens Pandora's box with improper benefits. Athletic departments like UMBC aren't even in the same ballpark compared to big Power 5 schools like Ohio State or Alabama. Ok, so lets just say hypothetically that all football players COULD be paid the same and it all worked out. Wellllllll not so fast. Title IX states that there must be equal treatment when it comes to athletes. Everything that the football team gets, the women's tennis team must also get. So hypothetically speaking let's just say that the football team was paid for bringing in a boatload of cash. Well, then every single sports team MUST be paid the same. Title IX works both ways. The softball team and the Men's Basketball team would have to be paid the same despite the men's basketball team most likely bringing in more money for the school. Now because of all of the athletes at each school, the number that each student will be paid is suddenly dwindling because the university just can't shell out a few million here to pay athletes that are given everything they need to succeed in college. Few schools have that kind of money. Lastly, the point of the NCAA is amateur athletics. The second anyone gets paid, they lose their amateur status. If people compete in sports with Olympic counterparts (swimming, track, wrestling, etc) they would all lose their amateur status. Losing their amateur status would disqualify them for the Olympics. For most sports, the Olympics is all there is after school. There is no pro gymnastics league or pro softball league. Even if there is/was, the players would not get paid nearly enough to make a living off of it. Paying athletes sounds like a good idea, but it just simply is not possible.

I have an issue with them touting "national exposure" a bonus. If the NCAA didn't have a monopoly on players entering their professional athletic careers, the highly talented would still be gaining recognition in whatever arena they were playing in. But because they've asserted their supremacy as the source for "elite" talent in America, they can boast that their participants become stars before they ever sign a professional contract. I hope that this changes in years to come. Mandating that all players looking to enter the NBA or NFL must go through the same process, earning bogus scholarships for diplomas they'll never use, in the name of the unassailable "student athlete," is just propagating a system that benefits an elite few - namely the rich alumni classes of prestigious colleges, tv executives, and NCAA officials. They don't care about the students, unless they're winning titles. And even then, there's no guarantee that they'll go on to become successful professionals at the next level. It's criminal that these young men and women are giving up everything in their prime years for the promise of "national recognition," all while someone else profits off the name on the back of your jersey.

Look up the salaries for employees at the NCAA headquarters. These people are getting perks, travel deals, hotel accommodations, free rentals, and paid meals. This is not even touching their personal salary. Paying out scholarships for an entire season don't even equal the amount of the assistant coach yearly salary. Unfortunately not enough people are willing to break this flawed system down to pay the athletes, I mean student-athletes. 😒

@shvedja

Those who deserve it, get paid under the table. NCAA profits because they don't have to pay every single student-athlete and star players profit because they get their cut. Now if you want to do things the right way, fine, keep it as is, but then every player should be given the option to skip college and go straight from high school to the pros. Simple as that.

It's so simple, it's stupid. Just let the program profit money off of their own brand. Which means only selling Duke merchandise with no player's names or jersey numbers. And on the other hand, let the player make money off of their own name with no association to the school. So, a player like Zion can sign a shoe deal or get paid to make appearances, as long as it has no association with Duke basketball.

If college players cud make a salary to live of off, March madness would be a bigger deal and make even more money for the NCAA, cuz college players would be looking forward to college and also get a good education, and would stay longer in college, and if a kid gets and career ending injury there’s nothing for him... but what do I know

@@Decius. How about you pay every player at least 100k for participation, which is not an astronomical number, and if they really want to empower themselves intellectually, they can use that money to pay for college. Red Sox 9904 clearly your lying. These kids are not allowed to get Jon’s because that goes against their athletic scholarship. Second if they get injured their athletic scholarship is gone meaning they can’t afford the education and they must drop out. They are not getting a academic scholarship which means their tuition is taking care of if they play sports or not. Athletic scholarship only will pay them if they are able to play sports. Stop ✋ the nonsense of you don’t really know. Plus most them are not given full scholarship meaning they are collecting debt and can’t pay it off.
