#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

I think the most interesting thing is that this is an MMO now run and going to be expanded (with obvious limitations) completely by players who love and play the game. It is a new dawn.

@@nerdSlayerstudioss Shane and Tony from UOForever had Richard Garriott (UO Creator) come join the server for an event a few years back! It really kicked off a new era for the community thats kept the game alive for so many years. Talking to people on the internet was once a new and exciting thing, and UO and EQ were there for that era. That's why so many people try to recapture that in their PServers.

Wonder how successful would selling Server kits be. Like if any of the dead MMOs sold its entire server setup files for you to host for your friends. Like imagine a Wild star server kit. I imagine even if it cost a bit of money some people would poll together to buy it for a private server.

You would definitely want a free demo space to encourage adoption. Something that will allow for the newbie starter zones and a sandbox to tweak game world settings like xp gain and drop rates. If you want to play beyond level 5, that is when the payment schemas come into play.

Spreading the word to my friends who used to play - I played on Homecoming a couple of years ago and was glad to see the community still alive. This news is amazing and I love that NCSoft is so cool with this. Of all MMO studios, it seems they are among the most friendly to keeping their worlds alive - they keep the original Guild Wars alive to this day and now this... I assume that there was some money that exchanged hands, probably an agreement that if it goes from maintenance to actually being profits that there will be kickbacks. Still, it's nice to see a company play ball with their fans and not just quash it outright.

I agree, though about GW, it's very easy to host compared to most of these other online games, including GW2. That being said it's one of my favorite games ever.

Actually, it's under a paid license. There might be more to it if Homecoming ever goes paid but the team has been talking about finally being able to get their NPO paperwork finalized so, don't expect it to go that route any time soon. Especially since NPO running on donations is what the community voted for. Which makes sense, really as from what I've seen, it's the most sustainable.

@@nerdSlayerstudioss Oh absolutely, GW1 will always hold a fond place in my heart, as it was one of the first online RPGs that I ever played and the small guild that I played in was a tight-knit group that has forever shaped how I feel about guilds and gaming groups in general. I still keep in touch with them to this day.

They still do some updates to GW1, the ranger class was basically saved in the 2020 update with Together as One. I still play GW1 from time to time to slow crawl my HoM

For anyone looking to start there are EXP events currently going on other servers than the main one which you are not allowed to swap characters to or make new accounts on because it's overloaded currently. They said once things even out people can start switching to that main server if they want because everything in the game is free and nothing cost money. Another huge thing is that the game is seeing a huge influx of players right now which is good because the game is great and the more people playing the better. The homecoming developers have said that there is a pretty big update coming next with some new power sets and other things so if anyone has been thinking about trying the game or getting back into the game now is the perfect time cause you get that extra EXP plus you're ready when the new update drops.

That is not in NCSoft area of operation. It's all in the hands of Square Enix and SE is in Japan. Also, Japan have their own draconian copyright laws and you wouldn't see that happen for FFXI, ever.

From the beginning, Homecoming made no secret of the fact that they were going to keep in contact with NCSoft in an effort to legitimize their server. It took years, but it's great to see that their efforts have been rewarded.

This is wild. I've been advocating that once a mmo or game is no longer being run/sold, it should be open sourced, binaries for servers made available, etc. It's awesome to see a large company in the mmo realm granting a license to a private server to operate. That's not something I ever expected to see happen.

When I heard Homecoming announce this on their Discord server, my jaw dropped. Last thing I thought NC Soft would do. Respect for them releasing their death grip on it (so far). I'm usually on Indomitable when playing.

EA/Mythic gave their blessings to Warhammer Online return to reckoning a long time ago. The dev teams have added cities/armor that wasn't in the live game. Nice to a other MMO get the same blessing.

Well to be clear, I don't know if EA gave an official blessing...but Mythic (who was acquired by EA) has always had a positive stance on preservation so that doesn't surprise me. Look at DAOC

I spent hundreds of dollars on City of Heroes subscription fees and DLCs over the years. NCSoft releasing their IP for the fans gives me a sense that the money spent was not wasted, and I was supporting a passion and not a product.

Yeah holy shit, I've had a burning hatred for NCsoft from the moment they shut down CoH, and when I started up Homecoming over a decade later I literally cried as the music began playing, both for the main menu and Atlas Park. I truly didn't think it would ever get approved; but I also truly never thought I'd play the game again, and I was wrong on both fronts. I think this is the most glad I've ever been, at being incorrect.

Played CoH in its prime and started again some months after homecoming launched in 2019. While still "underground" at the time - it really was a thriving core community still around if you knew where to look. Was nice to see the blessing when it was announced on the discord and player base has only been increasing again ever since. Logging in on weekends and seeing places packed with players really takes you back. Definitely was not on my 2024 bingo card.

The Star Wars galaxy mention reminds me of Phantasy Star Online. It's been up on Private servers for about 20 years now, but not with the blessing of SEGA. Definitely an example that still exists without any help or blessing from the company that produced it.

I know this is an OVERALL good, but I still have mixed feelings about this. The people who got the license are the same people who were running that hidden private server and were responsible for clamping down on the remaining community to keep it a secret, up to banning people from everything they had control over if they looked like they'd talk about it. TonyV "officially" left to negotiate, but also because he was getting harassed because of his stance that nobody else should have the ability to host a private server besides them and they were in the right to keep it a secret. He left, everyone else responsible remained in power. And the announcement Homecoming posted included a line about looking to 'integrate' other private servers, which I guess means they now have legal backing to become the only one again. I just wish that anyone but these people got the license.

I'd be curious to know your opinion regarding Project Ascension. It's a custom WoW private server, that takes the base game and iterate on it to create a completly different experience than Blizzard could ever provide. It has been running for years but is there any chance Blizzard would ever legitimize the server at any point? With the release of season of discovery and the very copy/pasted UI they took from Ascension, it seems very unlikely and hint that they're more willing to compete on that "custom wow" market rather than acknowledge it. On the other end, they don't really have reasons to ever take it down as this is not a service they will ever provide and they could most likely make money out of it if they ever embraced the whole private server community. Hosting servers, getting a share of it through subscriptions, never having to create anything, allowing ease to create new experiences and maybe a bit of monitoring to ensure no innapropriate content is released. What do you think?

It has a weaker revitalization movement and effort, (not their fault necessarily) so if it does, it is going to take some time/work. The problem with Wildstar, and why I find people's interest in it...interesting...is the end-game design literally failed, Wildstar is a failed game design.

IMO all software developers should follow the same philosophy of id Software and John Carmack, after their software becomes "outdated" their whole source code becomes available as open source for anyone to be able to look and thinker with it. Look at how Doom and Quake are still one of the biggest communities out there, with content being released almost daily for the last 3 decades.

Agreed, however, some food for thought...all major game dev turned business guys are usually ex-programmers, so they often times aren't as interested in having others tamper with their code nor have a creative reason to in many cases. I think John is a great example, but there are also the Tim Sweeney, and Peter Molyneux and etc types (who don't seem interested in any of that actively). I think designers are more likely to want to see something live, even in a communal effort. Just some of my thoughts though.

If memory serves, the head of Homecoming left years ago specifically to focus on negotiations with NCSoft. Hard to run a fan server, develop new content (which Homecoming has done), and keep a full time job. Apparently said negotiations were very hush-hush as Korean studios don't appreciate idle talk. Methinks this is the result of FOUR YEARS of talks. FOUR YEARS. I am so proud of Homecoming, their team and the players. They fought hard for this win and they deserved it. And if everything goes well, there is a template for more community servers of older games. So who knows? Maybe someone will be allow to restart Wildstar and develop it into a good MMORPG.

Well E(vil)A(gency) did make the Westwood games (Command & Conquer) before the acquisition Openware so it is possible for douche companies to do non-douche things when the finally realize it won't cost them a thing from something they couldn't make any money off of.

This was a very light video. It's missing key points. Like it's sisters' game Champions Online. The reformat to a P2W type game. Changed design ascetic on the new servers. What the current development is focused on. Didn't have to go down the rabbit hole, but this just seems like a half-hearted effort.
