NCT's Johnny on Korean Englishman | Communication Skills Analysis 

I'd like to do a video with more focus on Josh and Ollie as well. If you have any good recommendations, let me know :)

Johnny is super chill & deadpan. It’s just his personality…he’s not usually hype

Johnny is quite introverted when he is with strangers, but in the NCT he is one of the main jokers and very friendly with ALL nct members

i think johnny is just...a really laid back and chill guy :)) he's never truly like 'hype hype'. he's usually very deadpan and chill.

Josh and Ollie have two channels. One is Korean Englishman and they usually feature other guests on this channel in the styles of interviews or introducing korean culture. The other one is called Jolly and it's primarily just Josh and Ollie experimenting and doing their own thing (although they do feature other guests as well). Would recommend the latter if you want to see more of Josh and Ollie's dynamic :) A fun pair of guests on both Korean Englishman and Jolly are a couple of friends. They're twins, but one is a priest and the other is an army major. Would recommend the short series of when Josh and Ollie take the twins to a tour of Korea. You see how they all interact with each other.

I find Ollie and Johnny to have very similar personalities and humor styles when they're in their own comfortable circles. Johnny was solo this time, and I think could sense that this was Ollie's "territory" so to speak. He doesn't know them well enough to be able to gauge where his jokes might land so he opted to play it safe and let Ollie carry the comedy instead. I would love to see him back on Korean Englishman with Mark and Jaehyun in the dynamic!

Johnny is deff more laid in interviews until he gets comfortable I’d say he has more sarcastic humor u totally need to react to their interviews with JaeJae “Nct visit for chuseok” she’s great all of them are definitely much more comfortable Your reactions are always fun to watch I cant wait for more Nct u should totally check out “Nct capture your love in 10 seconds 90s love comeback journal” their personalities totally shine! Or even nct as cow boys round 3,4 it’s a lot of fun

I have to admit I felt like Johnny was a little off in this interview too. Like you said, I don’t think it’s that he doesn’t like them, but maybe he’s just tired. I agree with comments saying that Johnny is generally just lowkey as part of his personality, but I also think there’s a bit of a difference in personality with him when he’s doing Korean shows/interviews vs. English ones - and I actually think this is true for quite a few idols who are native/fluent English speakers. In my (completely subjective) opinion, I think many English-speaking idols are more relaxed in Korean shows/interviews because they have been “trained for them”. They know what the expectations, what is ok to say or joke about or not, etc. meanwhile in English they don’t have the same media training from their Korean speaking companies. What is ok to say and such might not be as clear and they want to be careful to not say or do anything that could be mistranslated/misconstrued and reflect poorly on their group. I think with idols like Johnny they of course communicate very well in English with people they are close to and in casual/private settings, but presenting themselves as an idol in English might be difficult to navigate. (This is also why I think many international fans are often let down by English speaking interviews because they feel either very surface level or awkward)

Love Korean Englishman's videos! They are such great interviewers! But I have to admit: I don't know if it was just a bad day for Johnny but I had the feeling that they were not vibing that much. He did seem really disengaged but maybe you are right and it was due to tiredness. I would love to see your reaction to the interview they did with Mark and Jaehyun! To me that was one of the best interviews they ever did and the athmosphere was totally different, very warm, which is what Olli and Josh are known for in their interviews. They are really good at making the people they interview be comfortable, which is why their interviews always show that the stars etc. are also just human beings.

Johnny in general is a super chill guy, but with his members shows a lot of energy. Since he was alone in this interview, it made it seem as though he's uninterested, but I don't think it's like that at all. If he were to have another member with him (like Mark and Jaehyun from last time), I think he probably would have showed more energy and would have felt more comfortable.

Honestly, I think this interview is one of the calmest ones I've seen with Johnny. He could've been tired or whatnot. But when he's comfy and in his element, he's super funny, and likes to joke around -- especially with Mark. I think it depends on who he's with.

Johnny always been labelled as the 'scariest' member to engaged by his NCT members when they first met him, but once they hit his right spot, the potential is just endless. He's just a very laid back guy and that what I like the most about him.

johnny is definitely an extrovert. he likes being around and engaging with people. he's pretty chill and laid back, but he's usually very responsive and shows big reactions. I think in this video, he is simply just tired

And also not having to speak all the time, but taking the time to process things. Great message right there💚✋🏼 Yeah, I think he was pretty tired because of the schedule... But still, I reckon he's definitely a chill, laid back guy in nature. Which is pretty different from the personality he has when he's with the boys or on stage lmao, the man is a MENACE, joke after joke, won't let anyone breathe😂😂 NCT themselves say that he is definitely on the quiet side when he's alone/in a smaller group, although he is one of the main entertainers when they're all together. Guess he's a sort of ambivert haha! Johnny's mannerisms and way of talking are why he's my favorite member. He has this great way of subtly messing with the members (especially Mark - "weak to his jokes" lol) but it's always out of love. Like he'll do a string of straight-faced comments/jokes/digs and lead them along it, but it usually ends with him sincerely laughing about the whole thing. It's never at anyone's expense. He seems to really just like to make people happy with his words. Anyway, thanks for the spotlight on Johnny! One of my favorite personalities in Kpop :)

tbh i was super excited to watch their interview but i was so suprised by how off johnny seemed. tbh it seemed like he was very tired but did his best to engage in their conversation

I recommend you to watch some of the videos on their other channel called “Jolly”.

I mean... 127 has been working like crazy this whole year, they're probably always tired. But I also feel like Johnny has some moments like this, where he's very chill and other moments where he's full of energy and is almost imposible to keep up with him

U should check out the Korean Englishmen’s interview with mark and jaehyun too! It’s my all time favourite interview and I always go back to rewatch it. They were so comfortable and the vibes were very warm, I was laughing the whole time!

In NCT, Johnny is one of the most outgoing members. He is the jokerster and one of the instigators of humor and playfulness. However, as he has gotten older, he has become a little more reserved. (but haven't we all?) He is a pretty chill guy unless, he feels he needs to be the "dad" of the group which once in a while he does if he thinks the members aren't being serious enough. But for the most part, Johnny is a performer at heart, but he is also cool with taking a back sit and letting other members shine. He is the member all the other members (in all sub units) feel most comfortable around and at ease with. The other members say that when they have problems or need someone to talk to, they go to Johnny because he is a good listerner and not judgemental. Outside of NCT, I think Johnny is more introverted, but he is not an introvert. I think it just takes a little time for Johnny to warm up to new people. I think he studies and holds back with "strangers"/"new" people to see what they are about before he invests. He has a natural trust and ease with his members because they have known each other over a decade, and they are his brothers and friends. Once Johnny knows/trusts those around him he is the life of the party.

he is generally SUPER deadpan but he does have his moments of complete chaos. I do think he was just tired here and needed another member with him to get the energy up

the thing about Johnny is hes actually a veryyyyyy chill guy, if you see him in behind the scenes content a lot of the times hes chilling in the back and thinking and stuff and not so much wanting to be in the spotlight and altho he CAN and certainly turn on the extroverted personality when needed, his more natural state is a very chill guy and what makes him extra attractive for people is that hes super confident without putting others down. he can joke around and stuff with his members but he also gives them a lot of compliments and plays along with them which makes the group dynamics so good. The members always say hes a central part and the person who is a super important mood-maker. he probably was a bit tired on that day since they work like 16 hour days when they promote but that's also just his personality as I said. Honestly I love how honest he is and how he doesn't feel like he has to push it too much to be funny bc I find that very uncomfortable. I prefer this kind of humor more natural and easy to relate to and be like damn I wish I could have a conversation with him because hes so naturally charismatic and fun

It seemed like the food being served from Johnny's right side was distracting him. Later in the video, when he was more engaged, they were no longer eating and no movement and sounds were coming from that side. Or maybe he was hungry and he perked up, once his belly was full, lol!

So I was not surprised much about the mood of this interview. Instead, I'm quite happy to see that he can take it easy, and doesn't have to pretend or hype up people all the time. 9:34 I think he reacted that way because for an idol openly joking about d*cks isn't really something they would usually do, older and more experienced and established idols (like Minho or the group Super Junior) would probably react differently but NCT aren't that type of idols (yet) so I think Johnny tried to play it down/not to react to it to avoid any controversy (maybe he also isn't comfortable joking about d*cks with strangers? I know he is different around his members when it comes to jokes), the guys even apologized after they probably realized that it wasn't something appropriate to say in front of an idol even if that idol is from Chicago, they even mentioned that his reaction could have been "fear" and Johnny confirmed that it was "closer to fear" because he knows it would have been a feast for haters to paint him/NCT as some kind of pervert/s

Johnny is pretty lowkey and reserved when he's not with his members, but I also think that this was filmed very shortly after they came back from the US to Korea so he may be dealing with some jetlag. But I also think that he did warm up to them more towards the end. Maybe it's a mix of both him being reserved and being tired. I agree with you though, I also thought he was a little off during this interview too.

Johnny is someone who is more laid back because he has so many members that he is with all the time, I would imagine that he is a bit awkward because he does not know how to be the center focus. He does things in a way of thinking of others rather than himself. He has his own RU-vid channel I think it is called JFFCC or something like that.

I'd have to say that even though I love Johnny and most of the content I've seen from him, I was a little disappointed to see him so shut in this interview. I guess he was not feeling so excited or social that day because I believe that Josh an Ollie are very comfortable people to be around with and Johnny can be the life of the party too. I feel like the dynamic in Mark and Jaehyun's video was way more natural.
