That fucking drummer is so dedicated, he quit his 6 figure job because they wouldn't let him tour. Maybe it's spirit like that makes this live performance so picture perfect.
Passion and talent I would say. They sadly do not earn enough money to keep their dreams alive right now. You can check out more about their financial situation here: www.patreon.com/neobliviscaris
Thats what caught me the most when I saw them live, not knowing them that much before. Those two ar so different and then so fitting well together, its amazing to see. And I took pictures of that show that captured that duality in a way that amazed me because I didnt plan it at all, it showed on camera in a very natural way. Great experience :)
“And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope from Portal of I was included in a teaching curriculum at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the song being analysed for its composition” Holy shit. I wish I could take Ne Obliviscaris 101
@@triptychlux They're still pushing the mostly monotonous music scene. Every prog song doesn't have to be new. It just needs to be different from most other shit.
I see people complaining about the death metal growling vocals....personally I think they work perfectly, I love how they contrast melodic vocals and growling vocals perfectly
First I have seen of this but i don't gander in the comment's of the music I like xDDD so I have not seen this complaining. But just like you said the contrast is on point. Not to over the top on either end. Both vocals balanced perfectly together. I know this is not how you define someone but I have herd MUCH worse (not saying it's bad in the first place)from band's MUCH bigger.
This song has many layers, many stuff going on, it could stand as pure instrumental. Some parts he's just sitting on top taking space. Doesn't happen everywhere in the song, but when it does you know it, he overloads it. The contrast is nice tho.
I think the mix of the growls and cleans is what makes this band so unique. Throw in the violin and the flamenco influence with the guitars and these guys truly are something else.
The bassist has actually posted a cover on youtube, where he's turned the bass up. It's genuinely the most astonishing bass part I've ever heard, there are absolutely some godly riffs in there. I highly recommend finding it and watching it, his channel's "cygnusbass".
The clean vocalist / violinist is so charming. I love his goofy dance moves and the genuine enjoyment he seems to have, spread across his face, the entirety of the performance. Don't change a thing.
I saw them first when supporting Devin Townsed band. They started and all are, yeah, okay a violin these guys are sweet. 10 minutes later everyone was mesmerized, what are we listening to here. 5 minutes later it was on. Should be a global powerhouse band
There are a lot of bands who don't play live as well as the CDs. Singing can be off.. music management can be iffy. stuff like that. But Ne Obliviscaris are phenomenal live. Would love to see them someday.
Honestly i think the live version is significantly better than the album version. (I love both) but live it just seems to be alot softer and cleaner than the mixing on the album. I have seen them live and they were absolutely incredible as well
Actually, whether the violinist is a righty or lefty doesn't matter, because except for in extreme cases (like missing certain fingers, for example) all violinists play on the left shoulder
I love how everyone in this band looks like the kind of folk you would meet in a pub after work over a pint of beer. And then there’s Xen (although a handsome person) who looks like he is about to sacrifice a lamb for a bit of rain in these hot and dry days lol.
Yea they're really talented.. Also ngl.. Their music is very unique, but also another bank that caught my attention is icdd.. Their music is also so awesome, but this one is very professional
This band is peak modern music. I cannot think of any other artists with the same level of creativity, uniqueness and ability to create something that's simply a joy to listen to. Not only this, but also being able to play their songs live and still sound as good (if not better) than in the studio. This performance is truly an impeccable work of art that proves that there's still good music out there.
something funny I noticed is I think xen, even though he's the founder of the band, gets tim to talk in between so he can maintain the "big scary screamy guy" thing. I find that really cool
Whenever people complain about screaming or growling vocals I get so annoyed. The human voice is an instrument, growling and screaming does to singing what distortion did to the guitar. Its just the next step in the progression. You can't have beautiful angelic chorus singing without guttural disturbing screaming as well.

Before listening to this, I was just a metal fan. Now I'm a 220 kN jet engine \m/
NeO will never be the same without Brendan. His bass-lines were out of this world. Rarely does a bassist shine out so much during a metal song and here he is, playing in his own unique lines instead of following the rhythm guitars.
He's incredible. Another song where he does his own thing but it works perfectly is Devour Me Colossus. If you haven't, definitely watch his bass playthrough of that song. It really gives you appreciation for his skill.
Back to this comment after 3 years. Still have tears listening to this, still feel sad aboout Brendan leaving, although the new guy is also great... but I will always have a bias for Brendan. He sent me a fan package all the way from Australia around 10 years ago, consisting of a NeO tshirt, the album Portal of I, a flash drive with NeO concert videos. A shame what happened.
Seeing the comment section I feel compelled to flip the other side of the coin and say that growls are amazing. Little do people know how much effort and talent it takes to do this thing "properly" and seemingly without much effort! Growls and screams here are f*cking amazing period. Although the bassist was the star of the Christmas tree for me, you guys are all incredible! Keep providing us with this beautiful art of yours and we're sure to follow.
Got to see them live in San Diego (I believe it was their first show on this tour) and they completely shattered all expectations. They played with the same fervor and intensity as a much larger show; made us feel special! And afterwards, they took the time to speak with fans, hell I even got some singing/screaming advice from Xen (who was so intelligent and friendly, a true gentleman). Man even 6 months later I still am raving about this particular show, so just go do yourself a favor and see this band live!!!
He was fired/kicked out from the band as it was discovered that he is a domestic abuser if I remember correctly. He may be incredibly talented, but that is just unacceptable and deserved what he got. Also, kudos for the band for taking action and holding him accountable for his actions. They held auditions for a new bassist this past year right before Urn was released, and I personally think the new bassist is even better. (Plus he doesn't beat his wife/family) I saw them about a month ago live with the new bassist. I was at the barricade in front of the new bassist and I just watched with my jaw dropped the entire show in complete awe of how amazing he is (and the whole band of course).
@@jppallais5663 I was a little disappointed this time around as they had a person selling their merch instead of the band themselves. I'll always remember Matt and Tim throwing cardboard boxes of merch over piles of snow in Philadelphia for their first US performance...They had to find a different venue as Cradle of FIlth had visa problems and couldn't make the first 3 shows, so NeO booked smallers clubs to play the beginning of the tour. Saw the 1st, 2nd and 4th tours as they skipped Philly on the 3rd time around ;( Tim was hanging out in front of me in the sound booth section though while Wintersun was playing.
@Zedrik Allen It's a very complicated situation. He didn't decide to just beat his mom one day, it was him finally fighting back against lifelong abuse from her. Not saying it's right or anything, but that's the short version of it. Their wiki page goes into a bit more detail about it.
@@jppallais5663 You should do more research because your comment is like 10% correct. His mother was a longtime abuser and one day he had enough and lashed out.
@@darkamyntas3820 Was he not old enough to have told her to piss off when it happened? Or was this like a decade and a half old charge, brought up and thrown in his face by people feigning outrage?
This is an example of stellar musicianship. Heavy guitars, superb bass and drums, the Yin and Yang of Death/Black Metal vocals with solid clean vocals and a beautiful sound of a violin. Epic musical Art! Well done!
Парень пишет, что - чуть не наделал в штаны от известия, о приезде с гастролями этой команды, сам был на их концерте, хотя знал, что они - очень о.уительные музыканты. I was in there live where playd NE OBLIVISCARIS and was...VERY VERY.
Sitting here in Perth, Western Australia and it takes someone in Port Charlotte, Florida to tell me about an awesome band from Australia. WTF? I might as well be living in a cave.
They are hands down one of the best metal bands out there right now, especially in the progressive/ technical metal genre. Finally a true Opethesque band
YES exactly - a true Opeth-esque band. So glad to see someone say that, I fully agree; and it's possibly the highest complement one can give a prog metal band (or any group in any music genre.) It's much needed to see groups like this. And I wonder if any of the members of Opeth know about Ne Obliviscaris at all...
Yes. I love this. This is so fucking metal. There's growl/scream/etc. vocals, an uncommonly large number of strings on those guitars, and they play it like they wouldn't stop if the police came in to arrest them. Even a stage dive. They combined my love of metal, orchestral/folk instruments, and general proficient playing. I'm definitely looking this band up.
My wife and I just saw them in NYC and these guys kick ass live. My wife doesn’t even like metal that much but she loved the show. We met the singer/ violinist at the end of the show and he was a very nice and humble dude who thanked us for coming to the show. Anyways they are touring for their latest album Urn. If you are lucky to live near a place where they are playing you should go.
I have to add to my commen couple days ago. I just found these guys last week and has been blowing me away ever since. This is almost scary good, I haven't been this amazed by a band since I discovered Opeth many years ago
This perfomance and the song are awesome but im also laughing my ass off about how 5 people outta the band look like the most normal people on earth and then there is the vocalist that is just straight outta your black metal 101 (apart from missing corpsepaint)
Saw them in Kansas City like ten years ago, some of the band was under the weather and they didn't have the guttural vocals but they played some songs they dont normally get to since the lineup was all outa whack. Still one of the most memorable concerts I've seen. Cool dudes, too. Very gracious and genuine to the fans after the show.
Love how humble NeO are. When I saw them in Melbourne 2019 Tim stopped during his violin intro just to say what a great time he's having and how much he appreciates us fans.
Just learned about you guys through Ryan & George of the YT channel LOST IN VEGAS as they did a REACTION video of this song. You guys have scored a new fan, in me! Amazing music!
cygna is playing bass with a smile on his face... and all of them seems to have a nice time! and thats whats truly important! do it and enjoy it.. way to go guys!!!
Kings of our emptiness, the flagellants align Their mouths fill with questions, blessed they are by God's tokens Ware to walk the painted... the painted path Walking the painted path through our plague fields Ware to walk the painted path Through the plague fields Kings of this carousel, disfigured upon white horses With Goya's claws and Dore's wings Down golden locks to red crosses Crowned children screaming from funeral shrouds To rapid eye movement, heart-strings undone ... our beautiful filth dances... and plague flowers Why our wall to reason fall... only human Kings of our emptiness, the flagellants align Their mouths fill with ashes and death's tongue The dappled dying Flowering cold grey tombs With crumbling walls... I feel Our truth is laid bare ... And plague colours A masterpiece of pain The portrait of what we are...
@@darjanator Yeah, Nightwish were genuinely mindblowing, Floor is a goddess and the band is so tight. Was lucky enough to see them with a full pyro show too. Never been to anything like it before or since!
In case you ever wonder why; I had the pleasure to meet with the band and Benji explained to me that he holds the guitar that high because of the injury in his hand after a motorcycle accident. Anyway, these people are talented, amazing performers and so, so, so humble and friendly it is hard to believe.
I would straight up lose my shit if I ever saw this band, this record is the peak of modern prog imo. Haven’t heard anything of the same quality in the genre since
Opeth is probably the most comparable band to NeO, they're swedish prog death metal type shit. They started in the 90s but are still kicking today. Similar music worlds. There's a lot of great prog bands. Thrailkill is a really good proggy technical instrumental only band based in LA, they just released a sick new album last night called Unperson you may wanna check that out it's tight
Omg, i'm like falling in love with this group. I just happened to stumble upon them and they are coming to play in LA in Nov. I'm so going. So charming, being able to play the violin like that. I'm really impressed so far. Ready to fucking rock the pit.
Besides the fact that this is an absolute masterpiece, the fact that the volume balancing between the individual instruments and vocals is spot freakin' on really stood out. Well done, lads; it shows some real passion and skill in your trade. Hope to see y'all in The Netherlands one of these days!
