I've had to cut a few bigish holes in brickwork with the cavity filled with the white polystyrene beads. I usually drill a few holes in the mortar around the hole needed and inject a couple of cans of expanding foam. Leave it to set for a couple of hours and then dig out he bricks, foam sets around the beads preventing an avalanche. Works 99% of the time, may get a few beads falling out but not the entire gable end full. Great job as usual ..

To stop the loose fill insulation falling out drill 12mm holes in the joint above the last one you are taking out and with a foam gun ( 10 minute foam ) squirt it in ,this will bond the loose fill and stop a good percentage falling out once you start removing bricks . Just a couple of ideas. Rather than using mastic on the cavity tray, try sticks like **** turbo , an adhesive and sealant. Gone in 15 minutes. With the bead insulation, we drill holes outside the area we are working on and inject expanding foam to stop any dropping. By the way, another good video 👍

I have a question, could I expect the same process for a building that's 100 years old? This is a big 4 story building that's old and the steel lintels are rotting pretty bad. It looks like there are 2 of them for each window though. The first one is embedded into the brick and then there is just a steel plate welded to that one that comes out the rest of the way to the outside brick. The welds are rusting and causing that front plate to fall and hang down

Cheers Justin. I used to despise this job when I had to do it under pressure when we did conservatory bases . We would be sent over when the window fitters needed a lintel or 2 . If I turned them down now We would miss out on a lot of work . I have my own little system now , a good scaffolder and it feels good to help people out as they are generally very worried when told the lintels have gone . I always used to try and take the minimum bricks out and struggle but now I make sure I take out plenty so we have more room to move and fettle the tray properly. A few extra brick to put back but way less stressful. 🧱👍🏽 Hope you’re enjoying the break 😎🍺🍸

I might just being picky but what stops water getting in between new lintel and the top of window frame and as for calling bits of scrap wood packers is a joke especially as you can get proper plastic ones.
