This week's severe weather is blamed for almost 60 deaths coast to coast. As freezing rain and blinding snow continue to torment communities, 66 million Americans remain under winter weather warnings. NBC News' Emilie Ikeda reports from Buffalo, New York.

As someone who spends a lot of time outside in the cold, I usually am irritated when people get themselves killed in entirely preventable circumstances, often due to truly foolish behaviour. but this cold snap is different. It’s very easy to have a true accident. Very sad.

@@M_SCWhen I lived in Wisconsin, I had an old two-wheel drive Jimmy with radial tires. Never slid off the road, never stuck in the snow, never late for work. Me, the person from California went in when others wouldn't. You just have to know you can't drive faster than your guardian angel can fly. God, I miss my Jimmy.

I was raised in western New York. In 1976 we had a blizzard so bad, generally it took me 45 minutes to get home from work, that day it took 10 hours. I topped off before leaving work, most of the problems came from people running out of gas on city streets, causing traffic jams. In the spring I enlisted in the U.S Coast Guard, to go some place warm, they put me on an ice breaker, even the best laid plans of mice, and men 😊

@@Fat12219 I have lived in Las Vegas over 30 years now. This was basically a country town with the Strip. In the last 10 years an influx of transplants have changed the city, we are a mess now. Many "movie stars" are moving here. I understand Sony pictures is considering a move this way. We are now having many of the problems SOCAL has, not to mention the cost of living gone has skyrocketed, average rent is $2500.00 per month. In a city with low pay, most jobs here are minimum wage, two jobs are common, three jobs not unheard of.

Because it's more of an addiction. Just like people do rock climbing, cave diving, cliff hiking, rooftopping. They don't see safety or death as we do, life\family\kids is meaningless to them, the near death rush it brings is addictive, like when you smoke or drinking you know it's killing you but you just can't stop.

I have disabilities, if I lived out there. I would make sure, the rest of the year I had enough canned food, snacks, a tiny little camping stove. If one is, able to be prepared. I live in California. And I barely go out, in this cold weather. I send my aide out. But I try to also have plenty of water, toiletries, food, medicine. During pandemic,it was a big help to me. To have my little stash, of supplies.

I live in western TN, we had 6” of snow in my city with an ice storm directly after, atrocious driving conditions and extreme cold that most people aren’t used to it hit -15 here, and it’s brutally cold again with my current temp being 3°F. Luckily I love winter and am well prepared, I’m actually moving to Fairbanks Alaska within the next 2 to 3 years, so this’ll be nothing there. But the amount of car accidents I’ve seen and houses on fire is unreal

@@meep2253 I love winter, hate summer, I love nature as well, enjoy hiking, etc, Alaska is so beautiful and has no cons that would make me not consider living there, only thing that sucks is I live sports cars and I’ll probably be selling my mustang before I move to get an SUV. But also my specific job pays a lot in Alaska so I can live quite comfortably But heat my mom asked the same thing 😂

Crime has been decreasing overall in the US despite popular talking points. But unfortunately, inclement weather doesn’t stop domestic violence, the morally challenged, or the addiction driven. It’s been reported that petty criminals actually took the opportunity to loot homes cleaved by ice laden trees, and I don’t even want to know how many victims were trapped inside with stressed abusive partners.

I grew up in the Buffalo area and saw at least 3 heavy blizzards before I graduated from high school and a couple more while I was in college in that area BUT this stuff is more crazy than anything I saw, with the exception of the famous blizzard in 1977. What I’m seeing here has to be about equal to that. The weather’s getting much more intense folks!

@@kbusby4824 My dad got stuck in downtown Buffalo -- he'd just started working for Erie Co a few mos before. His car was buried on a sidestreet so he went to a nearby church that had been set up as a shelter. Next AM he found his car & had to help everyone else parked on the street dig out. He got home at about 2pm. Meanwhile at home -- I was just under 6 and my brother was 3 -- our mother was outside shoveling snow. She came in to check on us -- we were mostly at the front window making silly faces at her and watching TV -- and when she went back outside to start shoveling, someone had taken off with her shovel!

The family that got electrocuted. The irony is they died trying to escape . They caused their own deaths . Had they just stayed in the car they would have been fine . The tires absorb the electricity. But they jumped out and ran towards the broken lines on the floor and stepped in a puddle charged with electrity

T hree ppl in Portland, Oregon, few days ago, their SUV were hit with a fallen power cable, they "stepped OUT" into it, Not realizing it was charged, three were immediately electrocuted and one was holding a child, that wound up in middle of the road and was saved from the power cable from a local neighbor.

How can people be so stupid to freeze when its as simple to get another blanket or put on more clothes if they dont have fire fuel or gas? Cold doesnt just blow in like a Ninja. Everyone knows it gets cold in winter. Meanwhile here in Australia we are having a heatwave! This week has been vile. Today was 44C {112.2F] with a feels like temperature ...due to the foul humidity .....of 47.4 {117.3F]. We lost power for 3 hours this afternoon. !No FANS ! No AIRCON!
