The Hamato and Foot Clans had a truce in place for years, but at some point, the Foot went back on their pact, attacking and gravely injuring Splinter. In a rage, Raphael attacked the Foot and was drawn into a duel with the leader, Oroku Karai. Karai killed Raph, but she was left comatose. Karai's son, Oroku Hiroto, vowed vengeance. Upon Hiroto's ascension to Foot Clan leadership ten years later, he summons the Hamato Clan for a peace negotiation. Splinter and Donatello head to Japan to meet with him, but as soon as they leave Leo, Casey, Honeycutt, April, and Michelangelo are ambushed by Baxter Stockman's synja. Stockman had finally tracked down Honeycutt's signal and aimed to capture him. As the odds continued to increase against the Hamato Clan, Leo and Casey attempted to hold down the fort while April took Honeycutt to safety. Honeycutt refused to be taken alive and threatened to self-destruct to keep himself out of Stockman's hands; Stockman called his bluff but also decided to not allow Honeycutt to preserve his dignity, and set off his Spider Mousers to detonate, taking out the entire block.
