As I started to plan my Firebird I wanted to see what was out there. Kinda disappointed in the prices and quality of the neck blanks that are out there. Here is a review of a couple of my older guitars and one for an upcoming series.

I bought a bass neck from Carvin back in '97, and glued mahogany wings on it. Came out kinda heavy, so I put it away for a few years. After selling my other bass (G&L) a couple of years ago, and playing mine again, I realized how nice that neck was; feels great in your hand.

I think that sealant is there to prevent warpage during transportation, especially necessary if its from overseas.

I always enjoy your videos-keep up the good work! Carvin is not too far from me and they're stuff is CNC produced, so you won't find any errors like runout or truss rod issues on theirs. If you walked into the Factory store, you probably could request similar options as you find on their custom models. I've inquired about mahogany versions and they'll do it for a little more than the maple. If you bought it from Stew Mac you wouldn't be able to since they just bulk purchase from Carvin.

I’m digging your flying V, awesome looking guitar. Btw i’ve just rough cut my neck thru blank and got only 37mm (~1.456”) in thickness. Shall i have enough wood to work with if the top added later on is half an inch? This is my first build ever 😅.

I would love the Carvin one if it was just available in a normal 25.5" scale length =/

The craftsmanship is unmistakable. Still, I think the lines in the body are a bit too much of a good thing. (matter of taste) Please keep making construction videos. Rob

I was going to buy a stewmac one and saw they had the truss rod cover the same so I was assuming one was buying from the other. I guessed with Carvin because they actually make guitars. I was right! thanks for the comment.

Question, I am starting a project using an old 24 fret bass neck and would like to make the project 35 inch scale. To make a 35 inch bass do you need to use a specific neck or just increase the length of the project to 35?

I've been wondering if you made video's since I saw you on TV here in Houston some time back, I build guitars, mainly acoustics, finished a Strat two years ago, plays great, just finished a Gibson Explorer copy, plays great and looks great, some one wanted to see a video of that build but I didn't take nearly enough stills but put one up here then took it down as it was really crap. I've been thinking of just using a neck through with real small sides added, may be an inch on both sides for a while since wood just makes the guitar pretty and that's it and I just saw an old Devo video, one guitarist was using what I want to build, I can't afford to buy a neck through from any one so will have to buy some maple or mahogany neck wood from a northern supplier or, go to the lumber yard you frequent in Houston, I'm sure the wood would be so much less in raw form as that's what I need. I've had a few people ask if I could build them a guitar and I told them I build mainly for my self because people can be so very picky and I know how easily wood can be messed up and just how difficult it can be to repair in some cases even as long as I have been doing wood work, electrics are so much easier to build than acoustics and very different animals, you do real nice work and are very knowledgeable.

Have you ever heard of someone doing a dovetail joint for a neck-through electric? Is there any benefit? Any reason why you wouldn't want that?

Are the alternating bands of color on the fretboard edges inlays or glued sections? Great video by the way.

Well they switched their name back to kiesel now and it don’t appear anywhere on the website that they make neck blanks. They may take special orders on them if you call I don’t know.

Would it be possible to take a carvin neck and a squier strat, cut the Squier into three pieces, take out the middle, and replace the middle with the custom neck? Then just shape the guitar back to the way it was and have a neck through strat?
@philipottey7723
@philipottey7723 8 лет назад
Possible? yes. Easy? no! It's usually more work because of the paint and hardware needs to be stripped before you try gluing the bare woods together. Also, neck throughs are a pain in the arse to glue like a 3 piece because the planes would alter like body like crazy, and the 2 blanks you're trying to glue would be oblong like putting big tires on small rims and vice versa, meaning you have to sand it and mill it in order to make it even before you try doing the actual work for the design.

Why not just get you some wood and make your own wings instead of cutting up a guitar that you can play!!!???????
@soundboy3

question, do you think there's enough thickness on the Carvin neck through to put a 2 (or 3) degree angle on it by taking a wedge off the top of the body length before gluing on the body wings? say, if you're thinking about doing a neck through SG (1 & 3/8" thick?)
@bigdguitars
@bigdguitars 8 лет назад
yea there is enough there to make it work. you can also then glue a shim in on the side with the gap. it would most likely have to be painted then.

Carvin doesn't make those anymore. I was just searching for "bulldog" on eBay. They don't appear to sell their neck thru blank anymore either. bulldogguitarbodies.

HEY BIG D, ON THAT NECK YOU BUILT, WHY DON'T YOU REMOVE THE THIN STRIPS OF MAPLE ON JUST THE NECK AREA, RE LAMINATE IT WITH NEW MAPLE AND SALVAGE THAT BAD BOY. I KNOW YOU COULD MAKE SOMETHING KILLER OUT OF IT. SHOOT, FILM THE PROCESS AS ONE OF YOUR TUTORIALS AND MAKE IT ABOUT HOW TO CORRECT ERRORS THAT WE (ALL) AS BUILDERS MAKE, NO MATTER WHAT STAGE OF THE GAME WE ARE AT. THANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEOS.

I thought the whole point of through necks is that you don't have to use a truss rod.
