I was leaving out of Charlotte on a beautiful fall Sunday morning after the UAW GM 500 . Stopped at a Citgo station in Gastonia and looked over and saw Ned Jarrett pumping gas. I walked over as he was finishing and asked if I could shake his hand. His wife was in the passenger seat and he had on his Charlotte Motor Speedway shirt. Remember it like it was yesterday. Back about 2004. He talked with me for 2-3 minutes. One of the nicest guys I have EVER met in my life !
It's getting far too close to a time in this world where Ned Jarrett won't be around to share these stories. I don't want to live in a world without Ned Jarrett in it and that's not some internet meme either. They didn't call him Gentleman Ned for nothing.
John Douglas Racing Video Gentleman Ned will be sorely missed when the day comes, but don’t forget about his son, whom I personally nickname Gentleman Dale. I’m sure he’ll carry on the tradition, telling not only his dad’s legendary stories but his own stories as well.
Ned will long be remembered in my book as one of the greats to ever drive a Ford(and yes I know he won in a chevy too so save it). But as an announcer I'll never forget that call at Daytona and whenever he'd say "It looks like we may have a Photo Finish". Man I really miss that old ESPN team, Bob, Benny, and Ned. RIP Benny
That 90's broadcast team was truly peak NASCAR imo. And unfortunately we have to add Bob Jenkins to that list of those gone but not forgotten alongside BP 😔
As a young boy I also remember hearing that Fireball Robert's had died during the race my family was listening to. I was old enough to know who Fireball was and that it was a huge loss for racing. Ned and Dale offer the best description I've ever heard as an adult of what really happened. Ned was a good and brave young man ... not to mention a great driver. Thanks guys!
It must be so awesome to be that old and still have your father in your life like that is something I'll never know but it's awesome hearing these old stories.
History belongs to the survivors. Always pay very close attention to every word out of their mouth because they lived it, & one day they will not be here.
When I was a young kid Fireball Roberts was my first favorite driver in NASCAR . When he died I remember it really affected me as a kid and showed the possible danger of racing. I’ve always liked the speed and the racing but I’ve never liked the crashes . Now the cars are much safer which is good.
WONDERFUL ! What a thrill listening to these men ... This is what NASCAR has always been for me and we are losing it ... makes me sad that we don't have real men in the sport anymore and don't even try to argue the point with me ... these guys a re giants !
Ned looks like he’s fit enough to hop into an F1 car. I remember listening to Ned call the final lap because I was the reporter for Bill Elliott’s hometown paper. Everyone in Dawson County was probably watching or listening.
They said Ned was the face of NASCAR. I always thought the voice of NASCAR. His voice in 93 Daytona was on another level, the pride showed through. I was 16 at the time but his voice off that tv it could have been yesterday.
I'd have coffee (and...sweet roll or two) with these guys. I like Kyle's love of the NASCAR history. His dad sure impressed him in the early years. The Jarretts were Ford guys for sure. Had some good memories in the years gone by.
Fun fact: Ned Jarrett is the ONLY NASCAR driver ever to retire as the defending cup champion, which at the time was called the "Grand National Series". Another fun fact: Ned Jarrett was the 1961 and 1965 Grand National Series champion, and Dale Jarrett was the 1999 Winston Cup Champion, making them the only father-son duo, besides Lee Petty and Richard Petty, to both win championships.
Those were the days! My father took me to Tucson Motor Speedway when I was 4...........it was 1957. I remember guys like Hank Arnold, Dave Cade, Roger McClusky, and Buddy Taylor. My dad would take me down on the track after the main and I literally sniffed every inch of that car! There's nothing like the smell of racing.
Had the privilege of having lunch with Kyle the year he broke his leg and mello yellow had him on a promo tour. Took him to the Blue Owl restaurant in Kimswick MO and he was the most interesting and congenial individual I had ever met. Still one of my favorites.....
This is the stuff that NASCAR was built upon and had held it up for so long, great families like the Pettys and Jarretts. Personalities such and Dale and Ned are what made this sport, what brought people into it and kept them hooked. Ned was one of the greatest announcers and tv personalities this sport has ever had.
Great interview. At 9:50 Ned states how much the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking book helped him. I would go even further and say if I could recommend one book it would be Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People (a Ph.D. Engineer who works for a large American defense contractor's Missile Systems company and an old car guy.
I've been a fan of both Jarret's for along time. Both give high class interviews. I've collected all Dales cars and memorabilia. Sorry to see him retire.
I get teary-eyed every time I hear Ned call Dale's Daytona win. Ned Jarrett is my all-time favorite race car driver. Look in the dictionary for the word "class," and you'll see Ned's picture. He is an absolutely outstanding individual.
I followed participated in and reported on racing since 1963 or 4 and I tell you there is no time and racing little ever compared with a 1960s them fellows had the horsepower no aerodynamics no tires it may run them cars just like today I can spend the rest of my life listening to these fellows tell stories 24 hours a day cuz there will never be another one thank you man cuz that's what it took to do that you had to be a maaaaaaaan !!!!! VARY FEW of today's "stars" could Carry the Gas much less Compete in these cars. no power steering no power brakes no aerodynamics and nothing just a big old boy turning the steering wheel I'm sorry but I think he has to be proven very easily bring some of them cars out of retirement stick them fellows in and let's see what happens. Thank you . China "Spell Check"
Awesome interview with 3 awesome people. I always thought Ned should pay me to go the the Spartanburg Fairground racetrack. Whenever I was there, Ned was the winner!
That was cool I remember Ned calling the 500 and u could tell he was proud as a popa could be it was cool and he didn't over do it proud but a pro all the way,it was cool they got a picture of mom too...
I remember watching the Dale and Dale show it truly was one of NASCARS great moments in racing, as was Dale Earnhardt's Daytona win. A few years later.
The Garret's are the classiest people in the sport.ned be proud of your son Dale my husband has always been a fan of all you Garret's God bless you all.
All us ol Tarheel boys listened to wtqr...and when Dale won that Daytona race...was so happy I needed a tissue. Always pulled for all the NC boys....Sure was a great place to grow up.
I'm proud that the only NASCAR driver I've ever met is Dale Jarrett. I remember him most as a broadcaster, but he was an amazing one. One of my favorites
Kyle, so glad to see you regularly again. This is truly your niche. Every one of these segments is like a dose of a drug i havent been able to find in years. Classy Ned and DJ. Miss you both.
I know Darrell Waltrip meant that "NASCAR family" means the real blood relationship of the racers but this talk lets all of us share in what it means to be a "family" in NASCAR. Even in 2022, when I see crew members and drivers at Buc-ee's next to Texas Motor Speedway or sit next to Brandon Jones at In-n-Out Burger after the spring race, we can all relate to the drivers as "family". Thank you Kyle for this show.
Vantastic show please don't ever stop doing coffee with Kyle and the Jared's entire family God love them God bless them great people I enjoyed every minute of this video.
First time seeing this. Dale was our family favorite growing up, entire house had Quality Care and UPS memorabilia everywhere. One of the last great ones IMO. Nascar changed too much after senior passed and all of these guys retired, I can't stand to watch it now.
I genuinely love Gentleman Ned - Mr Jarret seems to me to be a kind , extremely smart - and he's real - no put ons - I cried for Ned when he started clapping - I met Dale on the backside of Churchill Downs - I told him good luck - he wasn't that close to me but he made his way over to me and shook my hand and said " Thank Ya " He didn't have to do that - but he did - he treated me as if I were one of his sponsors - Ned and Dale are nice fellas and I'm glad to have witnessed their greatness
Kyle should ask Dale about his failed Dale Jarrett Racing that was using rotted tires that put in great danger both students and instructors. A pure money grab. Jarrett should be ashamed. He also inflated speeds to get drivers to come back.
thanks kyle awesome interview the jarretts are a first class family the dale and dale show remember it like it was yesterday i was pulling for the # 3 car but i was glad ned was so excited
