Pj Durkin, I worked at Daytona Speedway 1996-2006 as part of the security/safety teams. It was Dale Sr that insisted that #3 car was 100% right, or he would refuse to drive it. On Saturday, Dale was not content with the engine. The crew cured the engine problems and Dale tested it again. He returned to the garage area and demanded the engine be changed anyway. One test run on Sunday morning, Dale said that the car was perfect. Dale would later say that was the best race car that he ever drove. Richard Childress never once ever questioned Dale Sr's decisions.
@sergeantmasson3669
@sergeantmasson3669 Год назад
@@pjdurkin8582 2nd hand hearsay. I was there and personally heard Dale Sr's words about changing the engine. Security staff had to be there if the crew team was still in the garage area after hours. Firstly, Larry Mac did NOT say that. Go watch that podcast again. Obviously, you know nothing about NASCAR race engines. The initial engine had a broken rocker arm and a bent push rod. Those were changed and the engine ran fine. Any shavings would not get passed through the oil pump screen or the two oil filters anyway. Those shavings were NOT found until after the engine had already been changed and the shavings were found later when that engine was torn apart. Dale Sr insisted that it be changed regardless of what Larry Mac's opinions were.

@sergeantmasson3669 Год назад

When Jeff Burton went to RCR he said RCR hadn't update like HMS etc., because they relied so much on Sr's ability. Imagine how many more wins & championships RCR would have had, had RCR given Sr cars like T-Rex in the 90's. RC, men like him are rare, a handshake deal meant something.

I was around 4 or 5 years old when my dad and uncle took me to the RCR shop in Welcome. It was 1991 or thereabouts and I was already a huge Earnhardt fan. RCR didn’t really have much of a museum at that time, but still a great place to see cars and such. Apparently while everyone was looking I had disappeared, so things got hectic for a minute. Turns out I had somehow managed to climb inside one of Dale’s old cars, bypassing the roped off area and was sitting in his seat trying to turn the car back and forth. My dad rushed to get me out scared we were all in trouble, but it was just the opposite. The guy working allowed me to stay in the car and continue on. It’s a fun story for my dad to tell and show pictures he keeps in an album.
