Wat een verhaal. Ik was er ook met mijn vader en oom en ik zie ons nog uitzinnig juichen bij het doelpunt. Gelukkig kun je het doelpunt nu uitgebreid terugkijken :)

You're right, with those kind of quality players, Holland had to be able to qualify for the 1982 Worldcup. Oddly enough they did not. And Yes that's Jan Poortvliet, the PSV player, who also made a appearance in the 1978 Worldcup final for Holland......

That was a really difficult group to be in...France, Belgium, Ireland...anyway, there were some mediocre teams on that Mundial, and on the following Euro 84 and Mundial 86, Holland could have been good on those tournaments. Remember, the oranje severely beat Denmark on a friendly before Euro 84 (6-0), and Denmark did good on that competition. But anyone knows what happened in that qualifying group... for Mexico 86, instead, they horribly messed up. How they ended behind that mediocre Hungary, even losing 1-2 at home, is beyond me.

Dragan Dragovic he's Jan Peters I guess, he scored twice on that famous England-Netherlands 0-2 in 1977, but wasn't chosen for the following tournaments. He played with Az67 and in Italy, too. He was a really good midfielder, often injured, thus his relatively unknown status. He scored to Italy, too, in early 1981 at the Mundialito in Uruguay.

@@frankwells7520 Hungary wasnt mediocre in 85, 86. In fact they were sensational. They won so many matches in those days. At the Mundial they collapsed against a strong Soviet Union but even before that match they were favourits. After the beat down against the USSR Hungary went mediocre.

Dragovic is right about Hungary in the qualification for 86... And they had the young Detari who was considered as one of the biggest talents worldwide. And i think the dutch had internal problems in the qualification for 82> 4 times the coach was changed in 1981!
