As someone who has been playing NFS for almost quarter a century at this point, I'd say the golden era was 1996 - 2002 (EA Canada/Seattle). Black Box-era games made some pretty awesome games too (up until ProStreet, when it was seen the formula was overused), but they never really felt like the NFS I've grown up with.
