Need to create 3D type? Frustrated by polygon tools? Use Nurbs!

Doing 3D type can be challenging in a polygon-based modeling environment. But Nurbs-cased modelers excel at this type of geometry. In this video, I show you how to model some type so Blender can then create a metallic type rendering. Whether MOI3D, Plasticity, Rhino or other Nurbs based modelers, they can be wonderful adjunct tools for general purpose 3D applications like Blender.

Moi is an amazing software. I use both moi and rhinoceros (with grasshopper) and ofc Blender. This is a great combo.

Hey Chris, this was great, thanks! Just a small point - you kinda "butchered" the bottom part of the R because you wanted to split the single point into 2 points for the fillet, but didn't really go back to adjust it and so it differs a lot from the original. Is there any other way to do that so it isn't so different, say, by creating one fillet and the subdividing it in half?

As a cad/nurbs user I can say that type has its own problems in cad programs, usually it is related to knots distribution on the font. Of course you can modify it or clean it - but that is altering the font. In generale it is pain in the ass most of the time. Also you should fillet edges after deforming the type - so the fillet is not deformed.

It's true NURBS modeling may have its own challenges. But the point of me making the video wasn't to say either NURBS or polygon modeling are always better, but that given a certain situation one may be advantageous over the other.

Thank you for a video just for me! I've used Rhinoceros before and liked it, but I've never heard of MOI3D before. Will have to try it out!

Its seems it can import ai path in Plasticity. Saw someone convert it to a step file online and then import it

I don't believe in software wars at all and I'm also not a fan of internet This vs That culture. But from what I've seen, and my general gut feeling at this point in time, I think Plasticity is the way forward as the "ultimate" Blender companion. For many reasons, as you've said in your latest videos, a CAD modeler is a great companion to Blender's polygonal modeling. Plasticity is just $149 and feels modern and fresh with great momentum. It also offers a real-time 'Blender Bridge' that connects Plasticity with Blender so that changes in Plasticity are reflected in Blender's viewport. I have a very strong feeling that the Plasticity-Blender combo will be huge on RU-vid.

Yeah, I agree. There are videos calling Plasticity a 'Blender killer' or similar silly things. They're just adjunct tools. I've used Moi bunches in this capacity.

Instead of Moi, Can I use Inkscape or FreeCad? I'm on Linux and don't have Moi.

I don't know about the abilities of Inkscape or FreeCad so I couldn't comment on them.

Just finish my 3D model in moi3D and successfully export to Blender. Thanks for your export settings advice 🙏 now it's another challenge how to unwrap this model 😀

For importing Illustrator curves into Plasticity I found this video which recommends a web utility that can convert Illustrator data into a STEP file. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m2HTfAA64m4.htmlsi=w8Cugj2kzgRudP2H

I suspect the Plasticity folks will eventually do a direct import function.

Moi is super software but unfortunately there is no so much tutorial videos on RU-vid. Thanks and hope to see it more 😉

What? Nurbs are better than polygons? Always has been.

nurbs meshes are usually a huge bloody mess.. and the polycount is too high for anything besides product design.
@christopher3d475
@christopher3d475 7 месяцев назад
Nurbs meshes aren't a bloody mess, they're specifically tuned to represent the nurbs surface and can also be tuned to varying degrees of resolution. They're not meant to drive a Subd. And modern 3D apps and renderers can handle massive polygon counts, a well ordered subd object can easily generator more polygons than that of a Nurbs derived one. @@Slickstaff_Stainpants
