I’m just getting into the hobby with a traxxas udr . The battery stuff gets overwhelming to me with so many options . Thank you for all the testing it really helps with understanding the battery side of things.

Absolutely, it is a lot to learn! I have a ton of videos on LIPOs and chargers. If you have any questions I will try to help.

Here’s a weird scenario for ya brian. The only batteries I’ve ever had puff or go bad were the ones I discharged with my chargers. I leave em wherever they’re at when I’m done running, usually LVC and have never had an issue with them, also worthy of being said, the ones I charged and just left fully charged are going 2 years strong and not had any issues. I think the biggest issue with lipo fires is chargers failing and overcharging, and of course people not keeping an eye on their batteries while charging. May not be the right way but it works for me. Side note I always use lipo testers to check my batteries, before and after charging, and before and after use.

Yeah, I have nothing for you on that one!😁 If it is working for you might as well keep doing it! For my speed run LIPOs I want to maintain them the best I possibly can. I suppose I could be wasting my time but every reputable LIPO company out there I am aware of states the importance of keeping them at storage voltage of the best longevity and performance. I have had 1 LIPO out of about 25 I have owned puff and I think it was just a crappy LIPO. I do have the 8 year old one I still run and it is holding within around 100 mAh of its original capacity and the top speeds I get with it have yet to decline. I wonder if you measured the capacity when new and 2 years after being fully charged if you would lose any (you might not notice it... or care for that matter... if just casually running them). What is your LVC? I would think 3.7v might not really be bad but I wouldn't want to leave them at say 3.3v per cell long term. I have heard the same thing with LIPO fires. I think is VERY unlikely to have an issue discharging them to storage voltage but it makes me uneasy not at least being in the house when I charger or discharge them (I have a smoke detector in the basement not far from them).

@@BriansRCStuff LVC is usually at 3.5-3.7 depending on what esc’s are being used. I’ve done this method with all my batteries and not ever had issues. Hell for a few months I only had a 1amp charger from Hosim I used to charge everything. We’ve had 2 batteries fail. One was a cheap 2s from Austar hobby on scamazon and the other was a 3s my buddy had given me. They only puffed a little bit but I didn’t trust em so I threw em in salt water after cutting the leads off.

Great video!! This is exactly why I like the spektrum batteries, they self discharge lol. The charger will charge anything, but the g2 batteries have to be charged by a spektrum charger. Just no DC in...

Thank you! I think it is a cool feature but I am pretty sure their performance is not at the level of SMC or some of the other high performance LIPOs, they are $$$ and they are bulky. 😕 Do they drop them voltage down to 3.8 or 3.85 per cell or is it closer to 3.9v?
@rjs907
@rjs907 10 месяцев назад
Yup, they are expensive and dont pack the same punch at least the ones I have, but great for just bashing around. Storage voltage is selectable from 3.7 to 3.9 volts. Auto discharge can be set from 12 hours to 240 hours before discharge begins. They have new pro series 120c batteries now. Would be interested to see where they stack up @@BriansRCStuff

Great idea! Better if you use a xt60 adapter to whatever battery you power the charger with. Less chance of a lipo short. Even better, use your fully charged packs to bring your discharged packs up to storage charge if they are low. This takes a few more steps, but cuts down on wear of the chargers internal resistors. Set the minimum voltage like you did & add a lipo alarm set to your preferred to storage charge per cell voltage & your golden! No over discharged lipos! Wish had figured that last part out a few weeks ago 🤦🏾‍♂️ Edit: (I should post a RU-vid short)🤔 Not sure if the gens ace charger has this feature, but my toolkitrc M6D had a recycling discharge mode that saved me from having to call roadside assistance. I storage charged 2 fully charged 6s 6000mAh lipos at the maximum rate in recycle mode to charge my dead vehicle battery to a maximum voltage of 14.5vdc for a lead acid (PB) Battery. I now have 6ft car jumper cables with an xt60 on one end for high amperage connections to car & other lead acid batteries. Useful for field charging, high amperage parallel charging, & well, jump starts.

I used to use XT60 on some of my RC cars but they do not work well when you start pulling serious amps for speed runs (even XT90 are not that great). Sure, at 60 amps they are good but when I am putting 150 amps they would not cut it and be a big restriction. The 8mm bullets work great and I don't see a much greater chance for a short? I have shrink tube on the ends of the battery leads. Yeah, I was a little worried about draining too much out of a LIPO that was already at storage voltage (this is the first time I tried this (discharging) but I took out about 3,500 mAh with only using 500 mAh from the battery powering the charger. I was able to top it off in a short period of time. I think it worked well. What kind of issues do you see related to the internal resistance of the charger using a LIPO at 12.6v vs 11.4 v? That recycling discharge mode sounds good! I don't think it has it..... I will have to check though. I did have a chance to review a jump started a while back but was busy.... regret not getting it now! Thanks for the information!

@@BriansRCStuff my suggestion about the xt60s is solely for connecting to the charger's xt60 input/output ports. If you're pulling more than 60A continuously while charging, that's truly living dangerously. I agree, xt60s are too small for battery to ESC connections if you're pulling a lot of amperage. The resisters in the charger I was referring to were the discharge resisters. I believe there is a separate set, or a different circuit for the balance charging circuit. But that probably won't be a factor in the long run. I have no clue about charger Internal resistance... that's beyond my current interest level 🤣.

@@VDVC-RC "cuts down on wear of the chargers internal resistors." You have 100% ignorance about how chargers are made, and what you think "wears out" but hey, morons every 10 seconds in this hobby post something retarded, here is your sign!

Thank you very very much!!! I didn’t have my balance lead plugged in all the way but your video was super helpful! The warning asked if I wanted to continue charging without balance lead. I guess because it was not firmly plugged in. But you are super cool for making that quick video! Awesome! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
