Herons have been spotted over the koi pond and time to net the pond and for some winter prep. High end guppies were donated and going in the office! See the beautiful Sanke, Kohaku, Showa and the rest of the Japanese imported koi.
For some odd reason RU-vid cut over a minute off of the end of the video with the beautiful guppies. Stay tuned for more of them as we re design the tank and scale it with plants! Will add link for it soon.
Ha. They probably did. Many will go further south for winter. I hope the 4 I saw were doing just that. We were in the 70’s 2 days ago and the 60’s today, but your cold Canada air is headed this way for a week in a few days. Luckily not quite enough to freeze though! Luckily still warm enough to work around the pond and not lose any fingers.
@@CapeFearKoi Bahaha.. Its about -8 F here right now. Not too bad if the wind isnt blowing.. Hope all is well. Wishing you guys a great Christmas. All the best buddy
I love your Tancho Sanke! Koi are so expensive I can't imagine what I would do if a Great Blue Heron ate a $1,000 or $2,000 fish! I am convinced the only solution to protect them is a net. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks so much! It’s definitely scary knowing these herons fly around and their ability to cause huge damage to the pond. I know a few who have lost fish from a heron this winter. It’s pretty sad
Thanks Ray! Last winter was so mild we didn’t net, but with the cold arriving a little earlier and see in the birds, we could take our chances. We also had a heron stop by me snag 2 tosai last spring, so we’re extra paranoid!!
Hey Sharon! We have an odd leaf drop here. We have a Gall and Spring leaf drop, so the nets definitely help for that. Luckily the skimmer gets lost unless they are saturated from the rain. Had a heron make an appearance last year. It wasn’t good. They wipe many local ponds out before people get out of bed.
That’s great! We live between the ocean and a river, and it seems only the net works here since we have so many. Glad to hear they are working so well for you!
Thank you! I’m actually pretty excited about them. My buddy has outfitted me with his entire colony of these specific ones he created and will be creating more colors such as blue ones. Just added 2 bristle nose plecos from him tonight. It’s like being a kid all over again. The office is a great place to have a simple aquarium to re set the mind.
@@CapeFearKoi I know what you mean. I just uploaded my fish room for cold water species.. I just finished building my mini tropical fish room.. I think I will put livebearers shrimp etc.. It does bring back memories.. All the best Norm
@@stubbsaquatics6080 that sounds awesome. I will also be putting some shrimp in. I’m just waiting for some more vegetation and for the shrimp to gain a little more size. Hopefully within the next 10 days.
Thanks KoiRun! The Tancho is probably the Sanke and yes, the Ochiba is a fan favorite and very friendly. Ochiba continues to develop brown and curious to see what it will look like next year. Thanks for stopping by!
Hey there, today I spotted one of my long fin/ butterfly koi had something sticking out it’s mouth, idk if it’s a tongue or if it’s a disease. I tried pulling it gently cause i thought It looked like it was choking on some kind of worm and it’s hanging out of its mouth. it’s gill movement is also different from usual.
@@Vanix_MM2 fungal would be similar to a cotton ball. Just keep monitoring the fish and make sure the water parameters are good in case it’s something else. It’s difficult to say without seeing a photo. Any redness?
@@CapeFearKoi no redness, I looked into it’s mouth a couple of hours later and it was gone 🤷♂️ pretty strange, but I got a good look holding it with both my hands while looking down it’s mouth as it was opening and closing. So I have no clue what it was🤷♂️🤷♂️
