Have you ever thought about selling your scraps? You could determine a weight for each bag and set a price. I’ve been in many quilt shops that do that and I usually pick one up. Also, if you have a new quilter, that’s buying the fabric for her first quilt maybe Give a bag of scraps to her as a gift. Better than paying money to store. Enjoyed the video. Thank you.

Yes. We sell scraps online and in the store. We even have a corner of the store dedicated to scraps. It’s called the scrap station. The scraps there are color coded. People come and pick out what they want. Online we sell miscellaneous scrap bags.

Now that's a ton of scraps!! 😮 Thanks for all your quilting ideas! I have plastic "boxes" like yours for projects also. They work great. I have a friend who collects the little unusable scraps and uses them for stuffing her things, like doll bodies, draft catchers and other things. I don't feel guilty about getting rid of all the tiny pieces. She uses everything!

That quilt is really attractive! Who knew such diverse fabrics would make such a fun quilt! When I make flying geese blocks, I like to sew corner to corner and then sew 1/2 inch from that line, making a smaller half-square triangle, so I have 2 half-square triangles for each flying geese unit. Consequently, now I have to find a design for small hst's!
@janrichardson8331
@janrichardson8331 7 месяцев назад
Like your crazy flying geese. Suggest that when you sew the 3 1/2 inch square on the 6 1/2 piece that you sew 1/2 inch on the side of the square that will be cut off, then cut down the middle to create a HST that can be used in another quilt. 😊❤

Scraps are one of my favorite ways of making blocks. This one may become my new go to block. I am quite intimidated by flying geese and I recently saw a tutorial where they said to get getter at something you need to repeat and repeat. I always sew with the point up so I can stay on the right side and I like sewing the seam from the middle of the geese not the corner. The other thing I do is fold corner back to make sure it is correct before cutting off the extra. As mentioned doing the extra seam to make a triangle at the time is one step completed and I can put into a project box and save

I really like this flying geese pattern, for one the squares that you cut to make the flying geese are easy . I love watching your step-by-step videos, they are perfect and you go slow enough to show the process one step at a time. Which I love because later when I go back to watch the video. Those triangles are not small at all, 1 1/2 "offcuts are small, may be still usable though. Put them in another box or a ziploc? Do you use squares or triangles as leaders and enders? Are you doing hsts or hourglasses, hsts can make a broken dishes block? Frame or add setting triangles Do a mud-map of your projects, put one in each project as a reminder? It may get forgotten about? List the stages on the back, and cross off what's done if you like lists? The lady at the quilted forest is doing scrap busting on her 2 1/2" strips, maybe some of her ideas will work? Tumblers make an interesting quilt too. One of the ladies makes 4-patches as leaders... she puts light and darker together in pairs, flips one and has opposites. Put four units into a block, do it again bigger... put aside, when you have enough, you have a quilt, whichever size you want. Potato chip blocks or bricks can make quick blocks in a variety of patterns. Cut some stuff up and you, can sit and sew anytime, keep it in a basket near the machine? What about crumb blocks, r a fabric roll from them? A piano key scrappy border or binding roll? You can use units for the next quilt as leaders? Or fancy border blocks for the next stage of the current one, break it up, so it's less tedius. You must have some templates or special rulers to make for speedy cutting? You can use limited pallettes or go completely scrappy. Think up some projects, lay out their mud-maps or patterns and find the fabrics for them, put them in ziplocs until you can start them, when you get a box free? Maybe sell kits? Or you can put scrap bags together to sell. You can sell off-cut triangles too, you have enough fabric already for longer than your lifetime. Do some small gift type bits from project scraps rather than put them back in the bins? There are so many useful things to make from scraps. Including bowls, bags, placemats, pot mitts, cosies and pincushions. Larger square fabric storage bags can hold enough fat quarters or cut pieces and a pattern for a project? You could sell unique gifts in your shop. Do you do wip wednesdays? Maybe Give yourself a day off each week or once a month for sorting and cutting scraps? Is a manic monday a good idea? Could you take a box home to sort in a week or so, In front of a movie or three? Try not to open many at once? You can cut strips to start for projects, and break them down further later on? Put your new kit bags in the scrap bins you empty. You may need years already. That is a valuable resource you have there, albeit some would say just a little bit outta control. Could you cut up the colour coordinated drawer ones into pre-cuts first, then add to them? Easy to grab and try new blocks? Or sell bundles? You can keep the drawers full of grab and go co-ordinated projects too, more will fit in if it's neat pieces. Bundle and tie up the ones you want to go together? Use string cuts? Do all of it a bit at a time, and you have enough for so much fun. Have you discovered design boards yet? Make some yourself in various sizes? You can cut out all your blocks for a quilt, stack all the pieces on a board, and easily carry it to he machine etc, without losing bits, they can fit in a project box too. Put your fnished bocks under it. Make up all the units and restack them, in place on the board, to make sure you get it right or whatever works fot you. Leave it and come back to it, it all works out. Do you like chain piecing and use a blade saver, they go together. Don't give up, take little wins along the way and you will get it all done. All the best. You could make up tops and finished quilts to sell, with binding ready. From all those bins. Then the purchaser could choose batting and backing, get you or someone else to quilt it or do it themselves, rather than do all the quilting yourself in finished order, and make folk wait? You could have baby quilts on hand to finish quick, if non-sewers ask for them, etc.? Do you make a pillow case for a quilt, to store it in and use with it? Have a think and look at your patterns?

Try "Zero Waste Flying Geese". It makes 4 geese at a time. If you want it scrappier, use 4 different small sqrs.

Yes. Good idea. I think I even mentioned using the different pieces to make it scrappier. 😊

Have you ever thought about selling scraps by the pound? In grab bags? Sometimes I buy them online I love getting surprise fabric. You could do them by color or theme.

Yes. We do. They’re on our website at sewcharmingquiltshop.com. Also, we have a scrap corner of the shop where they are color coded in baskets and people go through and get what they want. They love it!

after sewing on one side of the geese and you cut off the extra, have you ever sewn on the other side of the pencil line and cut apart, getting a HST for another project, rather than tossing those triangles back into a scrap container?
@sewcharmingquiltshop

Yes I have. I didn’t toss them. I’ll use them in my other scrap quilt. 😁
