*When I say OEM, what I mean is OFFICIAL Nikon Branded equipment.
I bought this "Neewer" Brand battery grip and it came in the mail DOA.
Many third party grips will function improperly. I personally have experienced this on multiple cameras. It has been frequently disappointing.
Thanks for watching

Based on this video, I have just bought the Neewer battery grip for my Nikon D500. Fortunately, I read the manual and did not install batteries before attaching to my camera. After adding the battery and then switching on the camera, everything worked perfectly. The LCD screen shows BP next to the battery symbol, showing that it uses the grip battery first. This is welcome as I have Bluetooth on for SnapBridge.

NEVER INSTALL A BATTERY GRIP WITH BATTERY INSTALLED. install the battery afterwards genuine or not

I beg to differ... when your 3rd party are a tenth of the cost of Nikon, and you only want verical grip and shutter... it will do :)

All my grips have been third part, 2 from Neewer and all have worked perfectly.

Why are you stressing the fck out of the camera when putting on the grip? 🤷🏻‍♂️
@andreacostastudios884

You have to turn on the grip assell for it to work

I have the same Grip from Neewer. Mine works flawlessly, never a problem. Maybe your issue lies in the batteries you're using.

Here’s another one that the Neewer grip works great with my D500. I also have a Opteka grip on my 10 yr old D90 and its still going strong. Non-Nikon grips are a very good deal and the two I have are made quite well, look and work great.

dan4466: Nice to see! I have a 10 year old D90 and just bought a new D500, also. Congratulations! My D90 is very reliable with a variety of Nikkor lenses. The D500 is mostly to partner a Sigma 150-600mm Sport lens, for wildlife photography. And I am considering getting the Nikon battery grip for the D500. I also think there may be some user settings missed on this YT video, on the camera menu, the grip switch or when installing the batteries (sequence). Pretty strange for it not to work, if the terminals are clean and the battery is charged.

I have the D500 & when I use my battery grip change the battery order in the 'Set Up' menu? It gives you the option of using the batteries in the grip first & keeping the one in the camera body as an overflow..Just a thought. Mark.

That actually happened to me with a genuine Nikon MB-D12 grip.

I bought a Neewer MB-D17 battery grip for my D500 here in the UK and it accepts two Duracell EN-EL15 batteries and the original no problem, and is working brilliantly! The only difference between this grip and the Nikon grip is that the two command dial wheels don't have the soft rubbery material that has better friction for your thumb and finger tips. The plastic wheels can be slippy but not a big deal if you're saving a fraction of the price over the original! I had an Ex-Pro MB-D17 and that would cut out after a few burst shots, this one is working great thus far!

How can you have a problem with ONE battery grip and assume all battery grips other than OEM don't work. Did you try other batteries in the grip? Did you exchange it for another grip checking to see if you just received a bad one?

Exactly what I was going to say.
@marcuseponus3224

The problem is simple: NEEWER grips are to proscribe! You should buy a "less third battery grip" like Meike or Pixel Vertax. I've tried both on my D500, and both worked very well. One thing to notice: the Vertax grip DOES NOT have the function button near the shutter like the other ones. (nice lens by the way ^^)

are you using OEM batteries?

Got mine for the D500 and it worked great no issues. Left the battery out when I placed it on then put the battery in. I think maybe you got a bad one but mine works great. They don’t make a OEM battery grip for the D500 so you’d have to get an after market.

*The big problem here is that Nikon has created this market because of their excessive prices, and the D850 grip is a Nikon rip-off 'writ large.'*

That sucks. I don't have a D500.. but have had quite a few Neewer Grips over the years for my D7100, D610 & D750's, without any problems... and they've taken a beating. Even got a few for some of my buddies, with no issues either. That being said, I still do prefer the quality, feel and the "positive" locking of the OE Nikon brand grips.

does the Nikon pay you to promote its extremely overpriced grips? I bought one for D7000 and won’t make this mistake again…

I have used a Vello battery grip for my D750 for six months and have not had even one problem. If Nikon would drop their price by 50% I would buy it.
@D800Lover

I just posted the same thought - Nikon would sell a *LOT* more grips if they were priced reasonably - so Nikon has created this alternative market and they are the ones who can bring that market to heel - get your pricing right.

I'm using a 3rd party grip with No problems, what I did find out is you can only use Nikon Brand Batteries in the D500{ they have some kind of 3rd party battery Block}. 3rd party batteries in my D750 and D3200 no problem....
@MRMTerk

I'm having meike battery grip but it only does that with my duracell battery, not the genuine. I put first the battery in the camera, I open it, close it and get the battery out of the camera. I then put my battery grip and it works perfectly with my duracell battery too!!!

I will never use a 3rd party Grip ever, I did once on a D300 and as soon as I connected the thing up smoke was streaming from the thing luckily no damage to my camera at the time, Lesson Learned.

THIS IS RUBBISH! and simply not true in all cases, i have spent a fortune on OEM Nikon grips and they can have the same problems, not recognising batt order , not turning on, AA batt magazine not being recognised and so on. You certainly DO NOT always get what you pay for. If you get a bad one return it for another.

I agree. I had this same problem with my D300 and the nikon grip. It was so frustrating. I used to complain to the store but nothing was done. I used to overcome the problem by switching the power button off and then on again. I think it was a short. This time around I won't put up with it....

I believe OEM means that more than one company is involved in the design and manufacture process.

I watched a different video claiming that if you use a genuine Nikon battery you wont have this problem, in other words its not the grip at fault.

What type of lens is on your camera, it looks like a Voightlander

Yep it's a voigtlander nokton 58mm 1.4 so it's a 87mm on the D500

But i mean there is a certain model or serial number of batteries that won't work on the D500.

They are the correct model (EN-EL15) and work fine in the camera without the grip.

Sorry but for a 2000€ camera I don't see the problem of saving a bit of money for a genuine battery grip. I would buy third battery grips for D3xxx-D5xxx that's all. you have a better sealing, better response, better grip and durability and reliability (most of all)
