Negative space positive space are other ways to look at a painting. In this case a Bart van der Leck painting in the De Stijl style. Van der Leck is one of the members of De Stijl art movement together with Piet Mondrian and Gerrit Rietveld. Negative painting techniques acrylic helps understand your painting better and what to look for by looking at positives shapes (the subject) and negative shapes (the background), they both are equally important. When you want to learn how to paint with acrylics, De Stijl is an simple way of abstract painting with great result. I will show making several compositions.

Materials
The art materials I use in the videos are not sponsored.
I prefer to work on multi-purpose paper, more info in this video: • How to choose the RIGH...
In almost all my videos I use with Winsor&Newton Galeria acrylics, if not, I will say so in the video.
Other materials I use are in random order: 5, 10 and 40mm brushes, palette knives, acrylics medium, Ecoline liquid watercolor, Lyra color pencils, Lyra soft pastels, oil pastels, Stabilo color pencils, paper palette pad and basic masking tape. I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.

Hello there. Thank you for showing how you deconstruct an artist's style... which has helped me greatly to get unstuck when my abstract art style needed an inspirational, unblocking jump-start! Cheers from here (Virginia USA).

When you say you use paper to paint on.....do you mean canvas paper?

Hi E Douglas, no I use (academic) drawing paper. It is an all round paper type to draw on or use other materials. I use acrylics but never mix it with water (I use acrylic medium instead), water would break the surface. I use paper because it's cheap 😁, I use a lot of it for my channel. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting, bye, Albert

Hi Pratik, thanks. Wow, lots of questions. I guess I tell show you most of the answers to your questions in the video itself. My reason why is to show why I like the art by Bart van der Leck and because people tell 'I can do it too' but is often more complex to make one yourself. But when you start playing like I do, you can experience things yourself. Why chose van der Leck his compositions? I guess because the feel good, you have to open yourself for it. If you're not that sensitive use it as a mathematical project. If not, look at the colors, how many red-blue-yellow do you need? Or look at the negative image by only using black pieces. Any way of looking at his art is okay. But most important of all: have fun playing around. So let go and look at your reasons why. What do you like about his art. Show don't tell. Hope this helps and good luck with your project. Bye Albert
