Great job! A PR at Boston is a memory you will always treasure. I was in Boston right before the race and could just feel how special that event is to everyone. I had planned to run Boston this year, but God had others plans for me (malaria). I was able to get my bib, shirt, a souvenir, and see the finish line on Saturday. Amazing!
@runningwithjane

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that Jeff. I hope you are back to 100%. Agree the energy of the weekend alone is really awesome. Will you plan to go next year?

Thanks for your encouragement!!! Unfortunately I am far from 100%, but I am recovering. Marathons have totally kicked my butt until my last one at Dopey in January. I finished that one and actually felt good. I had planned for Boston to be my last marathon. I accidentally BQ at Myrtle Beach in March and only signed up after several of my friends enlightened me on how much of an honor it was to participate in Boston. I think my only chance would be a charity bib, and several of my friends have started nudging me on this for next year. I need to see how my health improves. I got out of rehab 5 weeks ago and so far my longest jog is 1 mile at 12 min/mile pace. My normal paces are close to yours. I will be praying and deciding later. Again, I am very happy for you on your PR! I watch your videos and I like your content. Very helpful. I have never had a personal coach, but you made me pause and consider it. If I run again, maybe???

Late congrats on your great race in Boston! Loved the recap, especially how you perfectly described the ending of a good race, both wanting and not wanting it to end. I believe the forced conservative start was a blessing in disguise. It's so easy to go too fast in that first downhill 10k at Boston. You were still fresh in the Newton hills and that's amazing. What a finish too!! Inspiring for sure! This is getting me pumped for a rainy 13.1 this am 🙂
@runningwithjane

Hi Thomas - I would have started conservative anyway...that's my jam lol. I actually think it didn't work in my favor in this case simply because there was literally no rhythm to my pace for the first few miles. Sometimes in running, your mind will tell your body what time to run! Negative splitting Boston? Well you can't say nobody negative splits that anymore! But I remember a saying that says "in a marathon, you lose seconds at the start to gain minutes at the end," and it sounds like that's exactly what happened (albeit accidentally) with the start. I love how well you manage your races and it most certainly paid off for you, so your videos have been highly helpful in that area for me. My next marathon is in July (San Francisco) and I'm hoping to shoot somewhere in between 3:40-3:50. I have a few half marathons as tune-up races, so I'm hoping I can get my half times down to 1:40/under.

As first time marathoner, if I’m at a comfy pace and start passing a pacesetter, it might make me think twice 😂 I am running your last 10 miler on your beginning plan tomorrow, but found my easy pace (3 miler) got faster after 1st mile. Heart rate still low and legs feel good! Your plan is excellent and will plan to enjoy first one no matter what pace I’m running 👍 Thx for sharing your experiences! It gives all beginning runners insight and confidence in the process ☺️ Although too soon probably…any thoughts on you running abroad to any majors? That would be a fantastic video 👍👍👍

Hi Alan...so I planned to just fuel every 30 minutes...but then I ended up accidentally only packing 5 gels instead of 6 so that messed me up. I do recommend an extra gel before a big hilly section though...such as Hurricane Point! And they don't have pacers at Boston actually. As your first marathon, just take it all in and enjoy it!! And be proud getting to that finish line. Big Sur is beautiful but a tough course, and know there will be plenty opportunities for you to go for faster time goals in the future if you want to. I honestly don't have a current desire to do the majors outside of the U.S. simply because of cost and time...but we shall see.😊

A question for Jane and runners. Do you guys get shin splint. How do you recover from that? Do you take rest until you recover from it or keep running?

Nothing worse than laces getting untied...you ever try lock laces? Ive used them for a year now, they are great..

I've literally NEVER had my shoe come untied during a race...at least not in recent years! I couldn't believe it!

Great job in Boston ! I was there too and the same thing happened to me at the start . What was the Key to keeping your quads strong in the second half of the race?

Congrats to you, as well, Matt! Lots and lots of marathon pace on hills! Like running 800-1000+ feet of elevation gain within a 16-20-miler...where 6-10 of those miles were at MP. Last year before Boston my mileage was very similar, but my long runs weren't nearly as intense or hilly.

Hi - thank you so much! Yes, 11 minutes under my qual. time. As of now, I don't have plans to run it next year though.
