Yes, all of this is very true. I have a stylist that does my hair maintenance (relaxers, trim etc.) anything else in between I do. I relaxed my hair after 12 years of being natural and it's because of ease and the season of life I'm in with my family. Ppl will always project their negativity on to others without thinking. TFS always ❤

Relaxed woman here. About the cancer claims - I’ve been pouring over the various studies that link relaxers to health issues. The most recent study that everyone refers to, to claim “relaxers cause uterine cancer,” surveyed women who used 'straighteners, relaxers, or pressing products.' The study concludes that the use of 'straighteners' was correlated with uterine cancer incidents, but does not single out relaxers. The study surveyed women of black, latina and non-latina white heritage. Keep in mind that the most common straightening product used by latina and non-latino white women is keratin treatments.* It’s well established that the active ingredient in those treatments (formaldehyde) is carcinogenic. Even the products that claim to be free of formaldehyde have been tested and shown to still contain it. It’s worth noting that the black latina women were included under the ‘black’ category, and I believe there is a high number of self-identified black latina women who would opt for a keratin treatment (such as the Brazilian Blowout) verses a relaxer. So until a study is done that distinguishes between formaldehyde-based straighteners and relaxers, I don’t think it sensible to say that relaxers cause uterine cancer. For transparency’s sake, I’ll note that black women made up 59% of the total number of women who claimed to use “straighteners, relaxers, or pressing products,” however the study itself had said there was ‘no differences in the hazard ratios between racial and ethnic groups observed.’ So, even with the data adjusted to account for this, there was no increased risk for black women compared to the other groups, despite probably being the greatest users of relaxers. To me this is further proof that we need a study that looks at relaxer use specifically (there’s a mixed bag of studies that look at relaxer use and breast cancer - results are mixed). Most interestingly, the study does loosely speculate that black women COULD be at a greater risk, because of a number of studies that showed we use the greatest amount of hair products overall, and way more frequently than other ethnic groups. This is not just about relaxers - there are a number of studies (some referenced by this paper) that indicate the use of everyday hair products such as scalp grease and hair moisturisers as containing known endocrine disruptors, and possibly being linked to breast cancer, early puberty in black girls and more. Where are the class action lawsuits against these products? These studies have existed for years yet I don’t see the natural hair community up in arms about it. Relaxers get all the noise when any studies come out because it’s convenient and cool to hate on them. I'm going to continue using relaxers. I don't think the risk is clearly defined enough, and even if more clear-cut evidence comes out in the future, I trust that relaxer formulators love money enough to reformulate their products to meet safety standards, in order to keep them on store shelves 😆 *The next time someone says that relaxers are being banned by the FDA, please kindly correct them and let them know that it is formaldehyde-containing keratin treatments such as the Brazilian Blowout that the FDA is looking to ban. This would likely just lead to these companies reformulating the products, not completely removing them from sale. None of the most popular relaxer products have any formaldehyde or formaldehyde derivatives listed in their ingredients. There’s so much misinformation and bad reporting out there.

I'm natural and honestly don't plan on relaxing anytime soon but I like this video. You're right about the cancer claims. I heard about the claims then I heard a doctor said it came from ONE study (I'm sorry but Imma need several studies confirming the link to relaxers and cancer to be true) which concluded that more studies needed to be done to confirm the link. I think they just surveyed a number of women who relaxed their hair and got uterine cancer. (No talk of environment? Family history?) I recently saw a news story saying FDA is planning on approving a ban on relaxers that have formaldehyde? They said there were several studies but I haven't looked at them. But you're right and someone interviewed in the story said the same thing, more attention needs to be pointed to what we're ingesting. Thanks to how we're treating the planet the water we drink, air we breathe, food ingested (due to the water and soil) are compromised. So it's whatevs. You do you boo.

Yes! And the ones that contain formaldehyde are not the box relaxers that we (as in black women) normally use. That is normally found in Japanese straightening treatments and keratin treatments that release formaldehyde when heat is applied. So there’s no cancer risk for the box relaxers. I wish there was more studies too!

It is sad to say ir but some who criticize… are just jealous. Relaxed hair it is more fragile, needs high maintenance, it is not as resilient as natural hair yes, but its easy to style and wash it and I think that is something some naturals envy from relaxed girls. Honest video anyway. Thanks

I'm one of the natural girlies and I love the content even though none of it really applies to except the protective styling part. I would love to see a straight natural vs relaxed video and why you prefer to be relaxed. when I saw your wet hair at first I was surprised at how curly it was, I know being relaxed would mean less reversion but it would be cool to hear your take.

I think everyone to their own it never use to be a big deal years ago if a black girl relaxed their hair I’m relaxed and love it dont relax as much as I use to but regular condition and trim it’s soooo much easier to style. I don’t have the time .if your natural and it works for you that’s good too. Many naturals are having the silk press which is still straightening the hair without the chemicals. I guess yes our hair and we’re the ones paying for it . We need to stop the hate towards each other regarding hair.

Its your hair, you and anyone can do whatever they want. Its your life, you can straighten it, wear it curly, dye it blonde, black , red, white etc. Tf is wrong with people going on the internet to project their insecurities and fears on other people. Its just hair. At this point, anything can cause cancer. We must all be doing something that will cause cancer. Thank you for videos, one of them taught me how to curl my hair with a curling iron.

I’m from Flint Michigan the city that had the poison water and I choose to relax my hair keep making Contant and just ignore the negative people. I even asked my stylist about relaxers being related to cancer and that they’re going to take them off the shelf she was like I never heard of a thing about that I know why I have a relaxer. It’s easier for me to manage my hair and I’m not trying to be white, so keep being positive.

Hey Niara! Love your content. Would love your advice on what I could do. I’m experiencing hair loss around my edges and back of the neck. I do have a stylist who does my relaxers every 8-10 weeks and I use pretty good quality products for maintenance (a lot of products I’ve found from watching your channel) and wash/deep condition weekly. My hair is pretty moisturized and soft, yet my edges are still thinning out. Have you experienced this before? Any tips? I’ve been relaxed for 9 months now after 11 years natural. I really don’t want to go back to natural 😩
@NiaraAlexis
@NiaraAlexis 8 месяцев назад
Maybe every 8 weeks is too much for your hair. Try stretching your relaxers to every 3-4 months and use a hair growth oil frequently. A protective style, no braids, or low tension style would help too to give your hair time to rehab itself

I have my hair relaxed and when I am judged for it or told I want to be white I just think what do you say that to the white people who are bleaching blonde, or getting balayage & highlights etc it’s all chemicals to get a desired look and grows back on a daily basis just let people live! Also do you have a favourite hair dryer that helps with the silk press? I love the little chaser tool you have! Really good content love from the UK 🇬🇧 💁🏾‍♀️
@NiaraAlexis
@NiaraAlexis 8 месяцев назад
Hi! My dream is to live in the UK one day 🙏🏾 also yes I feel the same! Everyone uses chemicals to some extent to get a look that is not natural to them. Honestly I feel like any blow dryer that can really stretch the hair is all you need. I’ve use $20 blow dryers from Amazon that do the job the same as a $500 blow dryer. It’s all about technique!

I would advise no woman every put these chemicals on your hair please- relaxers, dye, bleach just don't....Nothing beats the natural strength and resilience of unaltered hair structure. The best thing you can do for your hair is learn how to handle it properly with the tools and products that work for you, and find a style that you can achieve and master with minimal damage.

I definitely agree that everyone should wear their hair how they want. I myself have even considered going back to relaxing my hair but I literally cannot get over that relaxers are DIRECTLY linked to cancer. I cannot knowingly relax my hair knowing I am increasing my risk, especially when it's non essential. Saying that doesn't hold a lot of merit for you is wild to hear
@bibliolov
@bibliolov 8 месяцев назад
I can understand that. But, I think she's comparing that to the myriad of ways that we can get it just from basic things we do on a daily basis. For instance, using fluoride and antiperspirants, yet many will never give those up. Not to mention artificial sweetners, too much sugar, never exercising, high fat diet, alcohol, smoking, etc.
