There are many ways to describe Neil de Grasse Tyson. Astrophysicist. Popularizer of science. TV and radio host. Evangelist of space exploration. PETA booster. Oenophile. Director of the Hayden Planetarium. Latin ballroom dancing gold medalist. Prolific author and Twitterer. Honorary doctorate hoarder. Demoter of Pluto. Humanist. Realist. Atheist or agnostic? Badass.
Tyson should not be described, however, as Carl Sagan: the Sequel. Tyson, after all, was recruited by Sagan to attend Cornell, but passed him over for Harvard. In fact, Tyson has always marched to the beat of his own drum, and that has led him on his own unique journey from star wrestler at Bronx High School of Science to the science celebrity who was chosen by People as the sexiest astrophysicist alive.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON:
Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. He is the first occupant of the Frederick P. Rose Directorship of the Hayden Planetarium. His professional research interests are broad, but include star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our Milky Way. Tyson obtains his data from the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as from telescopes in California, New Mexico, Arizona, and in the Andes Mountains of Chile.Tyson is the recipient of nine honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid "13123 Tyson".
Tyson's new book is Letters From an Astrophysicist (2019).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Neil deGrasse Tyson: I've had several people come up to me and say, “What can I do to be you?” And the only aspect of me that’s really doable is I can tell you what my academic pedigree is and what I did as a kid and what things interested me, but what I do day-to-day is not the fulfillment of some preexisting job description. It’s just things that I took interest in on my own that the general public happened to also appreciate or like or want access to. And so within my job description as Director of the Hayden Planetarium and as an educator, as an astrophysicist, I kept accreting other things that I did that people responded to, positively responded to. So, I can tell you about the academic pedigree. The rest, you have to create what it is that you do best that layers onto the formal training that may be behind it.
I think the greatest of people that have ever been in society, they were never versions of someone else. They were themselves. You don’t think about Michael Jordan the basketball player and say, “Oh, he was just like this other player.” No, you don’t even say, “He was like this player plus that player divided by two plus this.” No. He’s Michael Jordan. I think the greatest of people in society carved niches that represented the unique expression of their combinations of talents, and if everyone had the luxury of expressing the unique combinations of talents in this world, our society would be transformed overnight. It’s the great tragedy -- people employed in ways that don’t fully tap everything they do best in life.
I am privileged and I don’t take a day for granted on the job about the fact that what I do, what people most warmly receive about what I do, are some of the things that I do best in life. I'm honored and flattered by that combination of facts as they apply to me. So, your task is to find the combination of facts that apply to you. Then people will beat a path to your door.

When I first clicked on this video with the title "be yourself" I was worried I'd hear the typical cliché, hackneyed advice that one often hears, but I was happily surprised when he gave the exact opposite. Amazingly so, he epitomized, or perhaps gave his own brilliant spin on what it means to "be yourself," which I will definitely take to heart. You, Neil deGrasse Tyson, are a man who knows how to inspire.

Its not charm or luck. Its passion. Neil even said this himself, he wasn't a particularly exceptional student. None of his teachers projected he would go far. Society kept telling him to pick another career. And despite all that It was his passion and grit determination that drove him to where he is now. Most people are not passionate enough. Sure they maybe passionate about their family, or about their fandom. But how many people are truly passionate about their career path and are not just in it for the money or are willing to walk that extra mile for their passion. How many people even know what their passion truly is? I think Neils message is to be yourself and not a clone of someone else, and not just that but to also to find your passion whatever that maybe and to lay down the foundations for this passion so that you can achieve it.
@kuroshinko427
@kuroshinko427 10 лет назад
Maybe it's because majority of people don't know how to make a living out of passions which is most likely their fandoms in this oversaturated environment so they end up being employed in jobs that they aren't exactly passionate with. Also most people don't have the luck like Neil and being able to do their dream job.
@jumpstart55million
@jumpstart55million 10 лет назад
Well yea there various reasons why many people dont end up being able to there dream job. For example an Oversaturared market place, like you just stated. A multitude of Socioeconomic and geopolitical conditions that create road blocks. And many other factors. i'm not saying following your passion guarantees you a job or stable economic position. That depends on quite a few factors many of which aren't inherently in your control. All im saying is. People make it seem like Neil only got to where he is by sheer luck. This man has faced quite a few road blocks on his journey to becoming an Astrophysicists. But because he was passionate and determined enough, he overcame all those obstacles and achieved his dream. The fact that hes become something of media sensation is more like icing on the cake. At his core hes just a man extremely infatuated with the universe. People think just because hes on TV that make him successful. Which is hardly the case at all. This is a culture obsessed with TV and media personality, an absurdly celebrity obsessed culture. No one factors into account that this man is just a really really passionate scientist. Take away the cameras and that's all your left with. Perhaps if people factored in that and subtracted the media aspect of his persona, luck might be given less credit is all im saying.

I try to go by this as much as possible. A quote I once heard was "only follow the crowd if it's going in your direction". I do stand out quite a lot at college, and pretty much everywhere else. There's nothing more indignifying than being swallowed up into insignificance. You should just take pride in being different, there's no good or bad way to live your life, our existence is subjective. Just don't fret about trivial issues and embrace the things in life that give you pleasure, whatever that may be.
@NoZAutonomy
@NoZAutonomy 9 лет назад
do you even ethics? you're simplifying things way too much You can't simply live life how u want to like you are saying, being odd or quirky are ways of being "different" in a positive way you describe, but "different" is an ambiguous term, it can mean anything that isn't normal. If you are everything other than normal, that is to say no sense of ethics, no sense of linguistic, no empathy etc can be extremely dangerous. You are a liberal positivist that sees things way too narrowly, people need orders and ideologies to become a functioning human being for society. If you embrace your natural instincts to find pleasure we'd all be nothing more than animals.
@RedInferno112
@RedInferno112 9 лет назад
***** We are just animals though. We're just a bit more intelligent than what you regard as "animals". I said to do things that give you pleasure. To most people that involves being reasonable to other humans, unless you need rules to stop you killing and raping people, which is pretty sad. Even then, looking at it existentially, that person should be able to see the consequences of doing something, no matter how appealing, and work out a good path to choose. It's their responsibility.

RedInferno112 I think you should care about the longevity of the human race, but other than that I am hurt that people are trying to refute your statements! You essentially said, focus on your experience and choose actions based solely on their value to you personally, rather than out of fear or anticipation of external reactions. People arguing against this, has society destroyed your imagination so wholly? I feel as though i'm witnessing Orwell's 1984 as you have embraced the weight that has been placed upon your hopes and possibilities by societal issues. Societal issues, which were manufactured by society itself.

***** Overall, pretty good advice. However, "science" is not always your friend. It has its fair share of con-artists (and falsehoods) waiting to scam you out of your money, through seemingly legitimate means. Just because someone says it's "science" and good, doesn't make it so. Use commonsense and always question things.

It is easier said than done. I know theoretically that we should be ourselves at all time and not care what other people think, because they don't have any impact whatsoever. But with the current society where everything you do is being watched, every action you take is being judged, it makes it so much more difficult. It's peer pressure
@Tool20001

@NdKZone123
@NdKZone123 10 лет назад
It's always easier said than done. Anyone at any moment at any time can come up with a reason not to do something. Let me rephrase the challenges you raised, which don't get me wrong are valid to some degree, basically are to not shy away from attention and the need to be selfish. So, are we taught by our parents/teachers to expect and receive attention? No not really (speaking for majority). If anything, they have advised us to not stick out and in their defense it was simply to make sure we didn't get into trouble. Next, are we to be selfish? Not necessarily unless you were raised from individuals with those traits or acquired them through peers. The only viable solution here, in my opinion, is to disregard the way you were raised and disregard the idealized norm in order to develop yourself as your own individual. This might mean you not being popular on facebook. A quote I just made up to suit this entry, "You can't catch a thief before a theft unless you know how to think like one."
@josiahdesouza9572
@josiahdesouza9572 10 лет назад
Hell Magda! I was just reading the comments when i happened to cross by your comment and i'd like to give you a different perspective on it. Anything is easier said then done right? I'd like to believe that too, but that exact thinking right there can either break or make you. If everyone were to, in some way, take their first steps to expanding their own knowledge you'd be amazed by the possible effects it could have on the world. Bettering yourself, educating yourself(on literally anything you'd like to know), being more empathetic towards each-other. You say that theoretically we shouldn't care about what others think because they don't have any impact whatsoever, but that's just not the truth. Everyone around us is an individual who has his or her own genetic make up that makes up everything inside them including the human consciousness. We are coexisting on a planet with so much to offer us its unfathomable! Sure people will judge you but that's because they are unhappy with their life or they're dealing with a lot on their plate and feel like they're in this battle alone. None us are though. Easier said then done is what i used to believe. Granted, i'm still at such a young age but do believe when i say that you'll never really know of the unknown until you to venture into it. There are millions of great people out there who might not have the information that you do but that doesn't have to be the case. Set an example for them and lead the pack. The message is out and it's up to us to spread it and make it a trend in our society. Remember that we are the universe! The universe itself is limitless: so why should we be mindful of our limits and not consider our capabilities? I think that empathy should be spread across the world and people of all nations should invoke that inner explorer and maybe this world could propel us into the next century of technological and societal growth. Thanks if you read, i further wish you the best of luck on this journey my friend.

I do my best to keep busy and read numerous articles. I read, and postulate appropriate answers and ludicrous answers and the answers or arguments that appear to have a truth value of “true” and work it out the best of my ability. Sometimes I just have to think outside the box and listen to u experts. I find Quantum Physics so fascinating yet hard to phantom...I am an average brained individual so to it takes a lot of extra energy to assist me. Thank you sir...my other fascinating physicist is Dr Kaku and I read and try to understand “String Theory”... kudos to u all!

Just remember that your “self” is not static. It changes constantly. In that sense, there is no such thing as a “self” just an identity that you create and also happen to like at the same time.

"Judge a tree from it's fruit, not from it's leaves." Honor, [integrity], nobility -- fearlessness in the face of judgment & uncertainty; the allowance of one's choices & conduct to [inspire] & define, instead of the words they speak, text, type, & hear. This is what constitutes [realness] -- & to a considerable degree, [respect]; it also separates those with genuine intentions, from people who seek the approval of others -- as well as those who perpetuate images with the intent to deceive.

Variety is the spice of life as many would say and being yourself is the only way that I can see that happening. I truly do embrace my A.D.H.D, asthma and many other things. I embrace the ability to tap into other people's feelings and see how they are doing and to just live life the way I want to. To do the things that I love and if other people are interested then they can tag along too. I may only be 16 but I have gone through depression and since then I have embraced the memories in my days of depression. That alone has made me appreciate so many things that I have taken for granted and it just opened my eyes as to what I want to do as a person. I want to bring the world a little bit closer, explore our beautiful planet, and to see people from all corners of the Earth. I have found love for all people, even if they may not like me as much I still see them as a person, an individual, some one special. They have a purpose in life and I have mine, but together we have one goal, that we don't see so clearly... to help the world in our own special way.

+Victor Stoev So what is the best advice other than that?
@krvzy4997
@krvzy4997 8 лет назад
+meinside99 No.. Being yourself is probably the best advice for MOST people. I go to high school in the United States, and most of them flock. And it's disgusting. We are taught to chase money, instead of happiness. Anything you want for yourself you can have, so long as you have that desire within yourself. And that's the key, wanting for yourself, not wanting what others want. You will always be better at the things you love, than the things you are made to do. And though people can't tell that they are made to do some things, that doesn't mean they aren't. Conforming, or not being yourself, is literally giving away some portion of your free will to some external group. How is that good advice? Im curious to know what u mean by 'only work' what is 'working' as it relates to being yourself vs conforming? Being accepted? Being liked? You DONT have to be accepted or liked to be happy. Usually people give up the most happiness by seeking it in other people when it truly exists within

The expression "be yourself" is kinda stupid IMO. Do you know who you are? Most people have no clue what that question really means. You have a false mindmade self in your head, but that is not you, that is just thought structures that is established in your brain. When most people say "i am just being myself" they mostly dont understand what they`re saying. You are an immortal, inivisible spirit having a human experience in a temporary human body. The real you cannot be described with words. Learn the truth about life, death, mankind and the real "you"; Google *Truthcontest* and read *The Present*.

The digital transformation allows expression in almost all the ways. I like how he articulates or talk about how to in his case been a scientist known or with books published. I myself im in that stage in wich you ask about how to stay at some level, how to improve, how to get in a career path. As he said try to see what combination works. The past years been of self recognition and now i think writting freely to find a style on whatever im going to do. The best way might be having a blog, using social media, reading books about other people from the career i choose and stay in the path.

I think people have idols not because they want to become imitations but because they recognize something in others that is already a part of who they are. We are made from parts of everyone we've ever known, heard and read, some influences stick more than others and that is how we discover who we are.

I think I know what he's getting at. In what ever field you go into, be confident in exploring and experimenting independently. To know yourself, is to know what you think and feel and put it into action. It's risk free and comfortable to walk in the foot steps of someone else but, like anyone else, they aren't going to save you when you're begging for a little more time, either way.
