A movie had to be made Neil.
@1stNinjaM
@1stNinjaM 6 месяцев назад
Yeah, and just like regular people, Neil has an opinion on it and is discussing it with someone who wants to hear it. He didn't even say it was a bad movie, he was just saying that the logic that moved the plot forward doesn't make all that much when you take certain factors into consideration. Everyone knows that Neil is the type of person that thinks further into things than a lot of people do and will see things from a more scientific perspective yet for some reason everyone seems to continually be surprised by Neil's takes on things or that he tries to educate people.

@@StrangeMuzikFan Yeah, I am defending him. You tell me which part of my comment was incorrect? You specifically said, "A movie had to be made Neil," which assumes he somehow didn't know or understand that movies need convenience to move the plot forward. I'm pretty sure he knew that but was talking from a realistic perspective hence his comments. Its not hard to come to this conclusion if you took 5 seconds to think about it. Mind you this is a clip of a conversation he is having with someone else and you're also somehow unaware of the fact that when people are talking to others about a movie they saw, they will often talk about things that don't make sense to them or speculate what it would be like if the movie's events were to happen in real life.

That’s the point, the whole premise of the movie is kinda dumb. They could’ve found a better existential threat to leave earth, like abnormal solar activity, volcanic activity, asteroids, etc.
@Ajaykrishna97_
@Ajaykrishna97_ Месяц назад
@@RaNc0R yeah actually they were trying to create a blight resistant crop but they had no time cause the blight consumed all of the nitrogen in the atmosphere. At the same time the astrophysics was well matured so they chose to just vacate earth. On the other hand what more life threatening scenario can we suggest? It has to be like a slow deterioration of earth not like an asteroid, so.. it gives drama to the screenplay of a hardworking man trying to keep things under control for his family and eventually motivated enough to go on a possible suicide mission for the family and also the slow damage give time for other drama of all the theoretical physics work been done and the eurika movement. There are some things that we should assume to make a movie interesting. I always think of scenarios that could have possibly caused this plot kind of like making my own prequel movie in my mind instead of finding holes in the plot this method gives more satisfaction.
@Baronnax
@Baronnax Месяц назад
Tbf, biologists today haven't exactly "cured" the common cold either. Blight is a symptom of a number of plant diseases, much like a cold is for humans. It's feasible the underlying cause for the blight was some drug-resistant superbug that couldn't be cured in time for the global food supply lines to not collapse.

There were more fundamental flaws than just the blight. Neil himself, in another interview, mentioned how the 1st world, located in the orbit of the black hole was a ridiculous (I'm paraphrasing) choice for a new home. No one would ever consider such a world, even if it had perfect biology, perfect gravity, with prebuilt cities and perfect landmass distribution. One fact to be considered, the locust from the movie breathes N2 instead of O2. It was mutating at a faster rate, faster than biologists to end them. Its like every time you find a poison, it mutates and becomes immune. Hence they found it easier with their present technology to move from the planet than to fixing the unknown. In our world, we still can't get rid of mosquito even though their contribution to the food web is negligible.

They were never really going to ship a billion or any large amount of people to an exoplanet (which was referred to as Plan A). It was a facade to convince Cooper and team to take the mission. The plan was always to repopulate the exoplanet with a “Population Bomb” by shipping a large quantity of fertilised human eggs (known as Plan B). However with that being said, it is true, biologists figuring out the crop issue would have been a lot easier. Still a great movie.
@ParrotPentester

They actually explained that in the movie, governments were practically collapsing just because of starvation, and this was soo bad that no country even wanted a war. They didn't really give that big of a hint as to how many people there are on Earth but someone estimated that it's at a maximum of 600M, so best case scenario it's 700M, most of which are farmers, physicists, and some of whom are biologists and chemists.

I think they did pursue the interstellar travel because the wormhole appeared on the movie on a perfect time. If the wormhole did not appear there in the first place, there wouldn’t have been Lazarus mission and they would send spaceships there. But any scientist that was faced with a sudden appearance of a wormhole would travel into it one way or another. Especially during a time when extinction is imminent on earth and humans are desperate to survive. I am Sure the blight thing is still being solved during that time but i remember they also said that corn and other crops will soon die down. So it is just scientific to not look for one option and put effort in a single basket. You have to look for other solutions and if youre faced with a magical appearance of a wormhole, you’ll grab that chance as well

The blight, as they describe it, seemed to be of extra-terrestrial origin. It arrived on a meteor if I'm not mistaken. It worked different from all other fungal and microbial life on earth as it utilized the gaseous nitrogen in the atmosphere directly. That is one of the problems that made it hard to deal with. There were no normal metabolic pathways to exploit with fungicides that would keep it in check.

Glad Neil acknowledged the movie is like the best space movie ever.I love that movie in a crazy way. It's still my best movie ever. Every music, tone, act, story, fiction in the movie is just perfect. The black hole part is satisfyingly satisfying. No one has ever been in a black hole but no scientist has been able to describe it better than the movie.

It's not a blight in the crops, it's a bacteria, harmless to humans, which has evolved in a way as a waste product it creates compounds that alter the atmospheres composition, that is what's causing the dust. So it's a bit more complicated than that

Neil got it wrong here, the wormhole was created by the advanced cilvilation and it would be suprising if human could not detect it by a telescope. Shipping a billion people was not challenging because the quantum data from the black hole helped them to go to the space against the gravity. So, its no wonder that the biologist couldnt stop the crops dying . 😊

I thought the whole story was just a dream of the main character while he was uncouncious when the plain crashed in the verry first scene. That is why he is in a long tunnel with bright light in the final scene and not in a space ship. His daughter is making the same dream, but on earth, she is just going crazy. You can actually see that she was imaginating the whole thing because everybody around her comfort her like you comfort a child. Telling her that everything will be all right and that she will save the world while being more depressed than ever because they know the truth : humanity is doomed and there is no worm hole and no way to save it. PS : It is actually my mother's theory, so she deserves all the credits😅.

I think interstellar clarified it. The farmers were lot scarce. 1. insane efforts were required to even maintain the farm. The crops can die any time. 2. Blight’s main issue was not crops, it was that it affected and ruined all the major forests including the Amazons. 3. This is same issue as wildfire after a certain point can’t be stopped. 4. In this case Earth was loosing the oxygen faster than it can make. 5. It’s actually easier to make a rocket than figuring out how to make more Oxygen/ instant forests on a dying planet.
@40hup

4. is total BS. Cyano-Bacteria needed some billion years to oxidize all available iron, and then add 20% of free oxygen to the atmosphere. It is impossible to use up all the free oxygen in a few years. And it would be much easier to reduce the iron oxide to iron and oxygen, than all that shit happening in interstellar. Interstallar makes only sense if you twist real physics to some fantasy "new frontier" flic, where the future is a reactionary concrete station orbiting saturn, where corn is farmed like in the 50s, and so is the mindset. The whole movie is a horror show of failed film making.

Wasn’t the wormhole sort of an anomaly that just luckily presented itself at the right time? It was convenient to do that because they’ve been studying that for years already. Fixing the crops problem would take more time.

There was a promising biologist, a botanist to be precise, his name Mark Watney AKA Mann, he had the fortune of getting trapped on planets. First he was trapped on Mars and was rescued. Again was stranded by cryostasis on a frigid cold planet. That man could have saved the crop disease if he's kept on the earth.
