The author of 'Accessory to War' describes his realization that, despite the tendency for members of the space sciences to lean anti-war, there has long been a connection between their field and the art of modern warfare.

Carl Sagan was an actual scientist who worked with NASA on the Mariner missions to Venus, the Voyager missions, and conducted research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He has authored over 600 scientific papers now published in the library of congress, and a pulitzer prize winning author. He was editor in chief of Icarus, the leading professional journal devoted to planetary research, founded The Planetary Society, and considered one the the greatest orators in science education in mass media as well as being a professor at Cornell University. Neil deGrasse Tyson is a manager of a planetarium in a museum. He’s far more concerned with pop culture than science, obsessed with his celebrity status and Twitter followers. This is really evident on his celebrity show Startalk when he stammers through interviews constantly interrupting everyone. His speeches and publishings are dumbed down to elementary levels of science to appeal to social media dullards. So no, he does not come close to Sagan’s level.
@Lucky-df8uz
@Lucky-df8uz 6 лет назад
I love Neil, but I agree with axnyslie that Tyson's fixation on pop culture and celebrity status and less fixation on the actual science puts him below Sagan. I do give Tyson props where it is due however his Cosmos series I think is actually better than Sagan's and I think Tyson is a better communicator than Sagan was, Tyson's fixation on pop culture and social media makes him one of the best scientific communicators there's ever been and that is important. I don't think Sagan would ever be happy or accepting of the fact military funding is so used for science, it's misplaced values, highlighting that it is so common tho is important he just didn't speak against it much. Neil is no slacker in the science department either, but I feel Sagan has more integrity.

7:55 the problem with that "if bad people come, I'll defend myself" is: the other side is thinking the same thing. There's no "right" side. There's "your" side.
@pkunkbwok
@pkunkbwok 6 лет назад
I don't think there was ever an issue about defending yourself against a genuine threat. The issue has always been, how do you decide what is a legitimate threat, and who decides that, and how, and how much transparency should be involved; and how do you insure that this power isn't abused, for example, so that a politician can look tough during an election year. I know Dr. Tyson's just selling a book on a semi-frivolous talk show, and I'm sure the book itself is more nuanced, but still.
@Dastsabre
@Dastsabre 6 лет назад
pkunkbwok well of course but understand that many if not most outspoken critics of war do not speak in nuance. Countless individuals treat war as an inexcusable occurrence regardless of context or reasoning
@pkunkbwok
@pkunkbwok 6 лет назад
Well. I don't feel war is something you should enter into lightly or without serious consideration beforehand. I feel it should be avoided if there is any viable alternative. But sometimes it's just what you have to do.
@aliharajli95
@aliharajli95 3 года назад
@@pkunkbwok i agree with you. But sometimes how can you stop countries and gov from abusing their power and strength for wealth and more power. Yet again the victim countries would need to engage into war to protect themselves from the attacking govs. So really its a cycle. We need to shape ourselves. Stop the greed, and see other people as brothers and family and another individual from thr same species. Even if they differ in thinking and religion and ideologies. I come from a country that was occupied for many years and to this day still trying to occupy. We fought our way to freedom. Without war, we would have been under occupation and to this day, oppressed. So i fully understand the need for war, but wish it wasnt there.

War. What is it good for? *Obama in 2002:* "I don't oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. That’s what I’m opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics." *t'rump in 2019:* "To deflect attention away from my impeachment. So, who can I bomb?"

Theodoяe Kяap Wow, what a simplistic, watered-down view of the Syrian conflict. You make it sound like the US gave weapons directly to ISIS, which is false. We did arm the FSA and opposition forces in Syria, and when they were beaten by ISIL, they took their weapons. But that's a far cry from "let's fund and arm jihadists."
@ainumahtar
@ainumahtar 6 лет назад
Simplified is the only way the conservitard base can get even the slightest idea of what went on, though. Making it simple, black and white, and easy to pin on an obvious target like a Clinton or Obama is the way to go for them. They had a hand in it so obviously that means they physically went there and handed out weapons to isis. You can't talk about people being just bad, they need to be portrayed as silly comic book villain bad.

Regarding the German scientists joke, maybe that explains Germany’s historic military output. It was one country with enough military capability to fight multiple fronts and to end up inflicting legendary pain on so many human beings. @cuuy
@cuuy 6 лет назад
It's totally naive to believe that the US would only use its military power legitimately and ethically. Just look at the history and at the current administration. Of course, when there are 'bad agents' operating, you want to defend yourself and kick their ass. But the US is sometimes the 'bad agents' itself. So either is Neil deGrasse Tyson naive, or he is selfish and only cares about his won security, and it doesn't matter what the US does with its military somewhere in the world, as long as the US wins. I'm not saying that all wars were bad or unnecessary - it was right to fight fascism during ww2, but there are better solutions to secure peace than weapons. The future of mankind can't be built on arms race.

Tun Huang you missed the point entirely. War is sometimes the answer. That’s a simple fact of the world. There are times when direct force must be applied for the protection of that which deserves protection. The only naive statement here is your assertion that there is always an answer that doesn’t involve violence. Oftentimes there are peaceful solutions. But oftentimes there are not.

On CBS This Morning, Neil went much further in his defense of the military and war. He related being at a space conference during the start of the Iraq War with a bunch of weapons contractors, who broke out into cheers and applause every time it was announced which one of their bombs it was that had just been shown dropping on a target via a live feed (i.e., when told it was a missile from Lockheed Martin, Boeing or General Dynamic, the contractors from that particular weapons manufacturer would react in this manner). He says he was troubled by their reaction but no longer is. He now says, "who am I to stand in the way of" weapons contractors cheering the success of their weapons without regard to those who were killed by them when war, as he put it, is an inevitable outcome of the will of the people by way of electoral politics, making him and the rest of us complicit to war if indirectly and, hence, morally incapable of rendering judgement upon others. Translation: In war, we have no moral standing to ask that those who make war and kill in our name not additionally behave inhumanely, or at least not do so with the same pleasure as that of watching a sporting event. Neil's CBS interview: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7axV6V8tc5k.html Neil sits on an advisory board of the military, and is now on a book tour advocating that the military (including space force) and war are a good for science and hence to our lives. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_Innovation_Advisory_Board

Tyson is actually wrong about that war thing. Pretty sad that he doesn't mention jewish workers working themselves to death while von Braun was drinking coffe and looking on them building his rocket through the window. And no - people were not proud of fighting in WW2 or WW1. Soldiers hated war, hated trenches, because it was worse than hell on Earth. Only people that did not fight were enthusiasthic about war. When USA joined WW1 in 1917, french soldiers used to say that after 1 day of trench fighting enthusiastic, smiling young american soldiers will be just like them - traumatized with broken minds caused by the horror they experienced. The myth of war, common among civillians and soldiers that never fought had its roots in old warfare - before-ww1 kind of wars, you know, brave knight on horse, heroism etc. WW1 on the other hand was millions of painful deaths, mustard gas and sitting in one trench for months. It was pain, blood, screaming and bullets. After WW1 european civillians were fully aware that war is evil - they experienced it on their own skin, suffering that seems to be endless, death camps, battles destroying fields. AMERICANS did not know what war looks like, bc they didn't fight on their own ground since war with confederacy. They needed Vietnam, which is not an easy subject, bc it wasn't a war with Vietnam - it was a war against North Vietnam, a communist country in the sphere of influence of USSR, totalitarian regimes. North Vietnam attacked democratic South Vietnam and USA helped their ally. But USSR sent help to the North and made a war in a jungle a nightmare for Americans - they left the war, democratic Vietnam lost, and Vietnam is communist and non-democratic to this day.

Gary Johnson - I found that statement from him strange. Native Americans worshipped the celestial deities - even more so than Columbus' religion. Even the Aztecs knew about astronomy before Columbus.

Werner von Braun was an astronomer? Yes, warfare has always been a big motivator for science and scientists. I don't see what Neil is so excited about. It certainly isn't the only motivation. Money, Nobel Prizes, ego, and certainly altruism are also factors. Wait, maybe Neil WANTS MORE recognition for the role played by science in fighting "good" wars. Okay, hooray!

Neil has built up a ton of credibility with me over the years for always being intelligent and thoughtful, so I'm willing to engage with his ideas about war. I don't think I agree with them, but because he has a history of saying things that are logical and thoughtful, I will at least entertain him on this. As opposed to, say, almost everyone else who likes to talk politics by yelling their predictable, biased opinions at me.

The book is 408 pages of text, 126 pages of notes on the text, referenced by small superscript numbers in the text. The balance is selected sources and index. He wrote it with Avis Lang, a research associate at Hayden Planetarium. She has edited previous work by Dr. Tyson. I've read about 50,pages and it reads well. The first couple of chapters have a lot of historical background. I think I will enjoy this.

Yes, science has walked hand in hand with military actors for a long time. But the risks that this collaboration impose on our species and other life on this planet continue to increase with new science and technology developments. Scientists, given their involvement, have a moral obligation to understand this problem and do what they can to address it. The fact that the collaboration started before Archimedes does not mean that it is right or in our interests as a species to continue. I refer you to Einstein. To Oppenheimer. "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."

I don't see why Neil Tyson's gotta diss "kumbaya" like, okay, sometimes war is necessary. Sometimes a prostate exam is necessary, I'm not going to go around singing its praises. Seems like Neil researched a bunch of scientists participating in wars throughout time and felt left out or something.
@markempathy5779
@markempathy5779 6 лет назад
Definitely.. it seems like he is priding in his knowledge and excellence. It's a bit scary to hear these types of statements coming from him as he ages & this all may simply be a fight or flight response. Historically it's a trend for great scientists to naturally be confronted when it comes to warfare but I miss the "you are the universe & the universe is inside you" altruistic Neil. If he's going down this road I like to think he is coming from an angle of defense rather than militaristic offense. I always love hearing these two converse though & the amount of time they had together this round was far too brief
@ChuinYih
@ChuinYih 6 лет назад
I mean Neil's last words were about going to war reactively, however going to war means going on the offensive, there is no such thing as a only defensive war. There will come a time where certain ideologies are worth going to wars for (fascism and communism during ww2) and the enemy will not stay down or take a step back for peace talks, you will not have a choice but to go to war, or submit to their wishes. Although these ideologies may not be relevant to the victims of the war, some would argue it's for the future or for the rest of the world. That is what Neil thinks of going to war, but the reality could be far from it. Almost every war the US is engaged in the past 2 decades were fueled by monetary and resources purposes. Money makes the world function, wars build industries, wars provide a monetary income, wars win you a position of superiority over trade and resources. It's almost impossible to rid the world of war or for the US to wash its hands clean, when the worlds status quo is solely built on US' military superiority.

Nice, a defense of the military industrial complex...
@ChuinYih
@ChuinYih 6 лет назад
@@futurestoryteller I do not condone the military industrial complex in any shape or form, I was just merely stating facts. To rid the world of war is no easy task, it is not something you can uproot with one pull as its effects is spread far and wide. War is a big part of human history and it will continue to be one. The fact that the 'peace' US is building is built upon the threat of their military might and violently removing their enemies is enough proof to that.

Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein and Arthur C Clark have all dealt with this reality that past wars depended upon science and that science in the 20th century has depended upon the military for financial support. We also argue about the interactions between the military and universities and raise moral questions about this dependency. In the end I believe that the final arbitration is and will be political, and that political solutions will help keep the goals of science up front ahead of military goals.

neil, who gets to decide who is a bad agent and who's not? you might be smart enough to tell which war is worth fighting and which is not but most people will decide based on their political and/or religious biases. and the result is we see america starting one dubious war after another since ww2. the truth is wars only benefit warmongers - political, military and weapon makers who are not honest agents. everyone else are duped. perhaps political acumen is not your strongest trait, then perhaps you should beware of your influence

+NaN +D LG The Ministry of Defense (previously of War), has to strategize with offensive operations in mind. A defensive war still requires a very good offensive strategy when taking back your own territory! USA, has oversees territories, and allies, so talking about a pure Defense is nonsensical. War in the Pacific was defensive, politically, but USA was on the offensive (militarily) from day 1.
@NickDe3
@NickDe3 6 лет назад
NaN well defense is the current use of militarized space. Intelligence and communications satellites are the military's current use for near earth space. Any advancements made by a space force would likely be in that field. We already have ballistic missiles that can't really bet much more efficient than they already are. We are more likely to see more reusable launch vehicles and the ability to safely disarm or de-orbit enemy satellites with a funded space force.

I just gained a lot of respect for Neil deGrasse Tyson! Saying what he said at the end could make him unpopular in his own community, but he's absolutely right... Being the aggressor in an unnecessary and self-serving war *is* bad, but you shouldn't be so naive as to think that there is *never* a justifiable reason to go to war. Also, wow Stephen Colbert comes off as highly unintelligent when he's interviewing someone with some common sense. He really *doesn't* know how to contribute to a mature conversation.
