“University teaches you how to learn” Love it. I studied music, surrounded by better musicians. But what I learned was “how to practice” AND with enough “good” practice you can learn to do some thing you thought impossible for you You’re not “dumb” you just haven’t had enough practice enough for YOU to do something. Some people need more (me), some need less, some can make the connections in time, some have enough interest to practice more. “Talent” is a partial illusion resulting from this unpredictable combination of “interest” and “practice”
@TinklesMcgee8123
@TinklesMcgee8123 Год назад
Couldn't agree more. I'd also say that "talent" seems to me, more often than not, is just an alignment of the way someone is most efficient at learning things, in combination with the type of skill being learned. Meaning, I was a very visual learner growing up, I struggled with math unless it had a visual component. I think the more "talented" mathematicians probably had a less visual based way of learning. I however excelled in the Arts and was often told how "Talented" I was, and often heard fellow classmates say stuff like "I could never draw that" "I don't have the skill to paint that". And I always remember being confused by this because I had a clear lineage of shitty work, to slightly less shitty work, to slightly better work, etc. etc. And it can become almost offensive, when someone passes off your time and dedication to a craft as just being something you're born with.

I wanted my life to end several times reading this until I had the realization that "life" doesn't really mean anything and doesn't have any real "purpose" and if that is true then "killing yourself" isn't really even "killing yourself" so I'm still here

During much of the conversation I was reminded of Albert Schweitzer's Reverence for Life: "Reverence for Life says that the only thing we are really sure of is that we live and want to go on living. This is something that we share with everything else that lives, from elephants to blades of grass-and, of course, every human being. So we are brothers and sisters to all living things, and owe to all of them the same care and respect, that we wish for ourselves." It's something I've tried to live by ever since hearing on... The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, season 1, episode 6, "Congo, January, 1917", starring Sean Patrick Flanery, air date April 8 1992. I'd give it a 92% out of 100.

How were eggs not included in his whole "milk and honey" theory? Nothing has to die to get a chicken egg... truly in this case because taking milk from a cow is taking milk away from a baby cow and likely a lot of dead baby cows in the dairy industrial complex. I am a little disappointed that Pete didn't provide better defense for veganism. Animal exploitation and suffering are a large, if not the largest part of veganism. Neil clearly just seems defensive about the food he eats. Why can't some people admit the climate science, the animal suffering, the exploitation and just say "I just still want to eat meat because it tastes good and makes me feel good and I don't want to go through the trouble of changing" why not? When "intelligent" people can't absorb all the facts and admit those things I have a difficult time trusting any other conclusion they may reach. That was just a really bad start for the whole conversation - I didn't trust Pete to challenge him at the end when it got to spirituality questions when he totally caved on the vegan comments.
@joeb588
@joeb588 Год назад
The life inside the egg dies. He was making more of a philosophical point about life & death with food than a specific point about our food industry. Unfortunately, the questions that should have been brought up with regards to dietary ethics with regards to our current food industry were not (i.e. torture, climate change, pandemic risk, etc.). But it was still an interesting conversation to have.
@riccikumpost4171
@riccikumpost4171 Год назад
@@joeb588 The chicken eggs we eat are unfertilized, so I guess you could say "potential life" but for the point Neil was making I think it fits the criteria. But I understand he was just pointing to one aspect of the debate but my point seems consistent with Neil's comments on being vegan/vegetarian - he seems pretty dismissive. I know Pete isn't as vegan as he once was, at least he doesn't talk about it much, but it just seemed strange for him to gloss over the comments is all.

Not to mention the massive environmental degradation from animal agriculture, a bigger driver of climate change than transportation. Surely Neal must care about that, if the suffering of the animals is off his radar... I honestly don't get it, he's supposed to be a thoughtful human
@flatearthisnonsense
@flatearthisnonsense 11 месяцев назад
I don’t like plants they are disgusting and I’m not gonna change. I will ALWAYS eat meat. It’s terrible what happens to many of those animals, but it is what it is. I’m a meat eater. Veganism is terrible for animal life, they KILL everything living besides the plants while farming those plants. EVERYTHING dies! Plus plants are alive too, and new studies show that they may in fact be sentient. They can see and perceive what color your shirt is. They can hear, and feel. So no matter what we have to “kill” to survive. I wish I could single handedly give these animals a good life until they meet their maker and become food.

Okay, I can't get through this. But, I'm curious about the milk and honey thing - apparently NDT has said that milk and honey are the most ethical foods to eat because no living thing has to die for them? But, anyone who knows anything about the dairy industry would know that's demonstrably false?! Love you, Pete. Glad you seemed to enjoy this. I might just watch the (amazing) Rory Scovel episode again.

He wasn’t saying that no living things die for them, he was saying they’re the only foods that don’t require death. So it was more of a philosophical point about life & death with food than a point about our food industry.

This seriously irritated the hell out of me. Maybe 1% of people have had dairy that wasn't directly linked to the death of the offspring and the milked cow. Saying milk does not involve killing is philosophically feasible, but has nothing to do at all with the reality of dairy production in the US or Europe...

I hope Pete can find this. Here's my story its long but it worth reading Science can never explain why I experienced the presence of a ghost/entity/alien/higher dimention interaction I'm a sane person with pretty good scientific background and an unending itch to know more about universe math and physics I experienced the presence of a ghost I was not on drugs or meds, and had no childhood trauma, no mental sickness, I was not drunk, I was fully aware and awake 100% and I was with a friend and everything that I was seeing he was seeing too The ghost was moving the ceiling lamp and there was no earth quake or wind and windows were closed and well shut, switching on the lamp, and the switch was on our line of sight and that room had only and only one switch, making noise by hiting the walls, throwing an object in a room were there was no wind, the object was thrown like someone had kicked it, there was no way that object could travel that far without receiving a good amount of force It was a fabric Dice bigger than a standard rubics cube it was on a shelf 15 20 inches from the ground and it was kicked 5 feet in front of me in a room with only two people and it was not my friend it didn't fall it was kicked, That night I learned those entities can only hit or kick with relatively small force they can't hold anything They also might get more physical power where you are aware of them or scared of them We both saw it years ago and this happened many times not once or twice Just like movies There is an afterlife or some sort of higher dimentions, Its not my belief its my direct observation and direct experience, I dont need to prove singularity at the center of a blackhole when I've been there... Hope Pete reads this and never stop searching because nothing makes Fing sense

NDT has an enormous self-righteous ego and wants to shove his arrogant opinions down others. I eat meat but his whole narrative on why it's better to eat animals sounds made up to justify his own diet and cognitive dissonance. Eating plants is not the same as animals, it's about minimizing suffering because we can empathize with animals, plants are alive but less sentient than living beings. Just because the ecological footprint of a human is large, doesn't mean we should eat a bucket of chicken a day and maximize suffering onto other beings.

I remember the bit about: "Nothing created the universe." I think the problem with the bit, is this is an ambiguous statement, and Pete addresses the strawman version of this ambiguous statement, rather than the actual version. When you say "nothing created the universe" what people mean is just that the universe was NOT created. Therefore there is "nothing" that created our universe, because our universe just *is* what it is, and has always existed. To reiterate this ambiguity. Within christian lore... if you asked Jesus who his (human) dad is, he would say "No-one is my dad." He is NOT saying there is a human dad out there called "No-one" who fathered him. What he is saying is that he does NOT have a dad. Likewise NOTHING created our universe... because our universe wasn't "created." "Nothing fathered our universe" means that our universe does not have a father. It does not mean our universe's father is called "nothing." Now, all of this is just an assertion, and you'd need evidence for a claim like this. However, I think the key takeaway, that unless there is evidence given for there being some "creator" of our universe, we should not assume the universe was created. A lot of religious folks may talk about the big bang as some evidence of a "creation" but that violates the 1st law and I think this betrays a lack of understanding of what the big bang actually is. It is simply the point of highest density and lowest entropy that our universe can be in and the entirety of time is the transformational process from that big bang, to the big freeze. The big freeze that awaits at the end of our universe (lowest density and highest entropy) will not "destroy" our universe, anymore than the big bang "created" it. There is no reason to think there is a time "before" the big bang, any more than there is a reason to think there is a location "north" of the north pole. Time is a dimension within the universe, so there can't be a time beyond it. There is no time in which the universe did not exist... because time is a product OF the universe... tldr: You can reword this more simply as... the universe has always existed. (edit) I hope my comments don't come across as disparaging of Pete's comedy, the delivery was great and Pete's a comedy genius, I just thought they raised some important questions, and I had some thoughts on them.

Feelings don't matter in science facts do, Richard Dawkins confirms 2 sexes and feeling this or that can be subjective but you cannot change your objective reality.
