Neil Oliver: The mystery of the Mary Rose

If you’re old enough to remember the day in 1982 when the wreck of the Tudor warship Mary Rose was raised to the surface of the Solent after more than 400 years on the seabed - then we're sure those images have remained with you ever since.
Reputedly the favourite of King Henry VIII - who commissioned her and saw her go into battle for him across three decades - the loss of the Mary Rose was a tragedy of note. Hundreds of men were lost as she took part in the Battle of the Solent, fighting a French navy bigger than the Spanish Armada, in 1545.

I am a sea farer by profession and I love Britain's maritime history. Recently one of the companies I have worked with, we had an email from their HR department saying we are no longer to refer to ships as a she, as it is derogitory to women apparently. Why these souless quarter wits work for a hydrographic research company is beyond me, they have no idea. Of course we give them a good ignoring.
