As saddening as this is for everyone and for myself as well, just remember the impact he had on your life and make sure you don't ever forget to make sure new people or anyone know who he was and what he did for music and the whole entire world. I know this is a day that I won't ever forget. May his greatness become the essence of life for anyone in need of it. It's not a very common thing when a soul like his leaves this reality. So tragic to hear, but I think the best thing to do in honor of this day,l is to never forget about him and everything he has done to shape the world around him by doing the thing he loved the most. Rest in peace Neil🌌 I hope Cygnus is a hell of a place to live. What a legend. I hope his family will be able to heal and move forward with things. My deepest condolences to anybody who is firsthand affected by his passing. There will never be another one of him. No matter how great some people are, without his influence, they may have never even been a name. Thanks for everything Neil. Enjoy your afterlife friend, you deserve a great one.
What I love most about this solo is that he's not just showcasing an extensive kit or amazing speed and endurance, he's actually performing a composition
Agreed... he's making use of that extensive kit and his speed/endurance to created a song essentially, with foot tapping grooves and a story... one of my biggest inspirations when I was a young drummer (and still) for sure.
Neil Peart is the absolute GOAT. Not only was his drumming absolutely unparalleled, but he was their lyricist. This man was a drumming and lyrical genius.
@@jamescourier1545 It's nonsense and childish to try to compare drummers with different styles, from different eras, as if it's a competition between them like a sport
Great inspiration to anyone who want to dive in to create music. Meaningful lyrics, musicianship, just lost of words.... Never will see Rush live again. Greatest lost in my life...
@@danielmoravszki383 grateful for the show I did see from 1991-2012 Kinda wish I had gone to see them in 2015 for what was their final curtain call. Man it's still sinking in that The Professor has gone on to a new project in the sky.
The earth is 4 billion years old. We were fortunate enough to live in the time of Rush. A void in the world of music that will never be filled or go away.
@Todd Pruett They couldn't have done it with Neil having done it first. Copying what someone else did doesn't make you great. Being the inspiration for several generations of musicians does.

@@kretduy6959 I mean, he was unhappy touring for a lot of his career. He was burnt out at the end of his career and it's so sad that he didn't get to live out a peaceful retirement like he wanted to. RIP to the best rock drummer in history!
Memory eternal! With the saints grant rest, O Christ, to the soul of Thy servant, where there is neither pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting. Amen.
I just really hope that he didn't have to live out his final days in agony from any kind of excruciating pain. I bet it took a hell of a lot of pain to get to him, regardless though he deserved to end his days in whatever fashion he wanted, aside from it being the other day. But it also just so happens Peart's biggest drum influence the great Buddy Rich also happened to pass away from a brain tumor. Only difference is that Rich lived 3 days after surgery and then passed from complications. I think Neil Peart probably that in mind upon finding out and if so, I hope he felt some ease in his mind knowing that he was going to pass almost exactly the same way as his drum hero. I feel like that was in mind for himself and family, especially considering that they didn't publicize his passing until 3 days after. Coincidence or not? Who knows. If not still, I'm happy that even under his circumstances and it being pretty tragic to hear. I'm sure he is finally able to be reunited to his past wife and daughter he lost in tragedies. I just hope that people don't mourn forever and just appreciate that he was one of the best musician of any instrument to ever have lived, plus for all the endless inspiration he gave to probably easily millions of people and more to come. Sad sad sad news but I mean that's life. Crazy but he was actually mortal hahahahaha who would have known? Sike, he'll be coming up again as soon as he's done enjoying the view from the mountain in the east. Rest in peace Neil.
@@BushcraftingBogan correct. Steve Smith, the drummer of Journey, recommended him for Neil during the Burning for Buddy sessions. Neil was curious about how Steve was so smooth and fluent in his playing, and Steve replied with one word: Freddie.
Stage manager: So Neil, what're we thinkin' for your setup here tonight? I've got a 5-piece from Guitar Center that a lot of folks seem to-" Neil: "I need all the drums." "Um, sorry?" "ALL THE DRUMS."
@thetwoboyz4542 Bonham was the grand master of drumming. Stuff that he did, and those drum fills were unmatched, and he was incredibly fast. Peart comes 2nd though. All drummers agree that Bonham was the greatest drummer.
@@joseitsmeSo sorry, John Bonham was a drunk and I hate to tell you but the Professor was light years ahead of his time. I love John Bonham too but whenever you advise your gift by drinking alcohol, Neil died of Brain Cancer!!
@@moom6340 I look forward to seeing your drumming video. Please send me the link. Because if you think ANY of this is random then you don't know a fucking thing about drums or Neil Peart.
@@moom6340 As soon as you show me your drumming video. If you don't have a drumming video then maybe you should shut your mouth. I have learned that most people that criticize musicians can't do 10% of what they do. That makes you a fool.
Every time I watch this video I feel very humbled knowing that I have witnessed one of the greatest musicians to ever walk on this earth. He is sadly missed but his legacy will live on forever.
I was lucky enough to see him twice: on the Vapor Trails tour in 2002 and Snakes & Arrows in 2008 Both times his solos were just incredible. When he played, there was silence in the crowd.
Sad to see people comment here just to try and say Neil Peart is overrated and start listing drummers they think are better. He has changed the face of drumming and rock for the passed 40 years not just with his drumming but all Rush's songs which he writes the lyrics to. Sure there are guys today that can out-maneuver Neil, but even those drummers would shake their heads at you for talking him down, as I can almost guarantee each of those drummers loves and was heavily influenced by Peart, he is a pioneer of modern rock and helped lay the path for modern drumming and the list of big names and celebrities that idolize him is staggering. And on top of that, this solo is actually one of his least impressive when ranked against all of them, like A Show Of Hands for example. He literally had the flu in this clip and was on the verge of cancelling the show! He will always be a legend.
jwaldman69 They don't get it. Pert is making music with drumming like a piano is also a percussive instrument. All those drummers they are probably talking about are just slamming away with all kinds of rolls and noise that is never in time. Anyone can do that. I bet none of those drummers can play in time with RUSH as Neil pert did. He played in time signatures that would change from 4/4 to 6/8 even to 7/4 then back to 4/4 nailing it in the ass. There is no band today in the style of RUSH that can even come close to rush. If anyone disagrees with this you can KNOW they are all the way ignorant. Peace.....
Neil Peart took the most basic instrument of all time, the drums, and made it as intricate, complex, and melodic as possible without compromising the integrity of the instrument itself.
Saw him 18 times and his solos were always a highlight. This is just stellar. Saw him play many kits, even the original Siingerland “Chromey”, but by far his DW kits produced the best sound. His snare is the best I’ve ever heard. Miss him.
This is the only drum solo I will ever follow intently observing every nuance and evolving change, this is a virtuoso in his prime. So sad we lost him WAY too soon. 😐
In addition to the legendary drummer, left us an example of overcoming life after losing a daughter and 10 months later his wife! Read the book "Ghost Rider". RIP Peart!
Shallex as opposed to gradually, as he gets older, getting worse as musicians and singers often do. He went out on a high note to be with his wife and daughter...thats what i mean
He knows exactly the sound off all those stuff on his monstrous kit and hit them with precision. Uncomparable legend, what an honor to live in your era.
I have been a drummer for 53 years I got a chance to see Neil once and when I did I just wanted to go home and burn my equipment because obviously I was never going to reach that plane of playing him and John Bonham are the best I've ever seen live may they both rest in peace this is how you play drums
Mike portnye in Dream Theatre in his golden days was very good also. But I'm a man and a listen to the drummers everyday. I think the best man is Niel always🙏😀
Danny Carey from Tool might interest you too, he is an insane drummer, able to play a different rythm with each of his limbs, simultaniously. It's great to watch
Don't beat yourself up too much. This is very good and he has great chops and obviously knows the rudiments. But many a drummer can survive by just holding the groove for the band. Most drum solos this long do not go over very well with the audience in my opinion
I already miss you so much, Neil. I've never cried over someone dying that I've never met. I won't be sad, instead I'll celebrate that you were born. Thank you for everything.
He was lowered into his drumset by a harness and lifted out the same way.. Best drummer that ever lived!!!! I saw Rush in concert many times. They were worth every penny!!! ❤
Just had to get here and pay my respects. The first musician I let out a good cry when I heard the news. Be strong and rock on brothers and sisters 👯♀️
Same man. After hearing YYZ for the first time I became obsessed with Rush. I got drum lessons 3 days after hearing it. 7 years later and he will always be the biggest influence on my drumming career and my favorite artist ever.
@@ludwigblomqvist7531 Missing him something awful over here although glad to have these comments to share the love and admiration and gratitude we all have for such a wonderful human!!!!
JOHN, HE INSPIRED ME TO PLAY DRUMS , I SAW RUSH PLAY IN THE 70'S IN DETROIT, A FRIEND OF MINE KNEW ONE OF THE ROADIES, HIS NICK NAME WAS SKIPPER, HE GOT US BACKSTAGE PASSES, I GOT TO MEET THE BAND , AND TALK WITH THEM FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES, THEY WENT ONSTAGE, WE STAYED BACKSTAGE, DRINKING RUSH'S BEER, FOR FREE, THEY SOUNDED GREAT BACKSTAGE, A DIFFERENT SOUND, THEN WE WENT TO OUR FRONT ROW SEATS TO WATCH THE SHOW. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME I SAW RUSH, IT WAS AWESOME, COUSIN FIGEL
I'll admit, I've never been into Rush, nor have I heard of Neil before, but... ... it's blatantly obvious that this man was one of the greatest drummers and musicians to ever live. Rest well now, Neil.
Same here. It just blows my mind. The stamina it would take at his age to do that is just unbelievable! And to read in the comments that he was in pain while doing this. Amazing! Gonna go watch it again. 💯👍👏
@@malsmithson4312 Up there with the heroes of his early career before Rush became a major success. Although a very private person he appreciated the respect and admiration and was always a class act and a humble man. He is an inspiration.
@@mck7646 my girlfriend attended HS in St Catharines at same time as him she saw all his HS bands he was in....she said everyone in st kitts knew who he was at age 15
Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't Neil Peart's drum kit here without a doubt be in the Smithsonian Institution? If not, that needs to happen right away. The Rock n Roll HOF is not worthy of it.
Not this kit, but maybe the last one he had made when he had everything on the kit that was chrome, he had it all Gold plated. Every nut on a drum or stand to the drum head rings to everything. Had to be a pain in the ass for his drum tech because it would have been his job to polish all of that before every show. So yes that would be the drum kit I would like to see in the Smithsonian. There were only 3 of them made, 1 was given to Randy Johnson the pitcher as a gift from his team, Neil Pearts estate still owns the other 2. I would like to see one of them in the Rock - N - Roll Hall of Fame, and ì would assume the estate would keep the last one.
The R&R HOF in my eyes has lost all credibility. It is not a Rock hall of fame if every year your inducting members that are into RAP, DISCO, and every other genre they can think of in stead of Rock & Roll.
What a respectful audience, no phones held up high to film the band, no screaming, no chaos amongst the audience, just living the moment and enjoying the music and the presence of rock gods.
Or simply put , nothing to make the crowd excited happened! Boring ass hybrid drum tapping . Five me a drummer that shows and receives emotional response to the audience.
The most amazing thing to me is when he is playing the tambourine with his left foot while doing everything else, he doesn't miss a beat and stays on time the whole way.
Exactly. Four different rhythms on four different limbs. He's playing a Drum Kat pedal with his left foot - he uses the left foot 'sleigh bell' effect on 'Animate' and other tunes, starting on 'Power Windows.'
It's actually proper stick holding and technique that allows for playing relaxed and not tiring the arms or wrists. I know I know, it's still impressive when applied to playing a RUSH concert 😉 So glad I had the opportunity to see them at the Montreal Forum back in the 80s 🤘😎
As an intermediate drummer, I think that it’s safe to say that after watching this Neil Peart has easily become my new favourite drummer of all time. Truly a once in a lifetime talent. RIP Neil.
@@michaeldalton8374"Peart explicitly discussed his religious views in The Masked Rider: Cycling in West Africa, in which he wrote: "I'm a linear thinking agnostic, but not an atheist, folks."
The first time I heard RUSH was Spirit of radio, was playing basketball with my older neighbor and it came on the radio at his house. We both stopped playing halfway through the song. I had never heard anything like it and was hooked. That was 40 some years ago. Finally went to see them in 2012. So glad I did. That was on my bucket list for a long time. I'm 53 and don't care about anything celebrity related. He was not a celebrity, didn't want the spotlight but he shared his awesomeness with us. I'm still bummed out. He deserved a long happy retirement for all the speakers he made me blow up.
Saw Rush live when I was 14, waaaaay back in Nov '74. Their words & music is the soundtrack of my life. Introduced my sons to them at a hot summer concert in 2003, along with 450,000 other fans. Now I'm 60, Neil is gone, I guess we all grow old. But when I play Headlong Flight or Working Man with the top down, everyone hears it and I feel young again. Rip Neil.
Rest In Peace... May you now be with the ones you love and missed so long. Thank you for your incredible contributions to the arts, humanity, and to those who aspire to exceed their self-imposed limitations... AMEN
