Personally, I think this album and hold your fire, is the pinnacle of their arrangements and technology - some of the hardest played live Wild seeing all the stuff going on in this song and his arrangements fit so well incorporating digital samples with acoustic drums guy could play tennis back there on this chart . Another note you see the shear raw power he pounds the hell out of drum then changes his approach once he studied with Fred grubber plays it with more finesse later tours but switched back to matched grip on charts he plays prior to Freddy instruction era . Miss the boys on stage

It's kinda refreshing to hear that, without the magic of mics and audio engineering, Neil's kit sounds a bit like my ol' 85 Pearl Export from back in the days when I spent hours & hours learning & playing this song while crammed into a corner of my teenage bedroom.
@SXI96
@SXI96 2 года назад
You do realize this isn't an accurate representation of how that kit sounds IRL right? The camcorders around this time had very poor mics for live recordings I know this because I was in a band in 93' and have recorded footage of my drums, which sound horrible and nothing like what they actually sounded like IRL I'm certain that kit sounded incredible in person without mics, that was my dream kit, it was a beautiful custom Ludwig kit

The way he approaches this is a great example why I prefer him to (insert drum God name here). So much variety to the playing in the various parts, but it still flows so seamlessly and is so cohesive and complimentary to the song. The drums are just as signature as anything else in the song.

Thanks for sharing. This is so great! I’m pretty sure this is a drum clinic Neil did for the drum school students at Musician's Institute in Hollywood. I was at the guitar school there in 89-90 and Neil and Geddy had done clinics there earlier in the 80s. 1985 maybe? Neil was an absolute force on the drums. He’s mashing them. This song has it all. Power, intricate stuff, dynamics. Thanks for the music, Neil! 👊

Jon Bonham was once asked, "what's it like being the worlds best drummer?" Jon replied, "I don't know...why don't you ask Neil Peart!"
@trenken
@trenken 2 года назад
Im not sure if its known that he said that. I keep hearing that same phrase about alex being said by eddie van halen and other guitarists, and same with other drummers for neil. There are a lot of people who still think bonham was better than neil. But neil himself has said there are many drummers better than him that play stuff he cant play, which is true. Difference is neils lyrics. No drummers can match that.
@HighPower762
@HighPower762 2 года назад
I'd like to believe that it's true, but I doubt it. Considering that John Bonham died in 1979..That's 5 years after Neil joined Rush. He hadn't had time to establish his status yet and was probably still running below the radar of most other drummers at that point.🤔
@dalegribble60

@@HighPower762 You're right....I was just using different names for a chuckle. The actual question was asked to Eric Clapton as a guitarist. He replied, "why don't you ask Prince." That one DID happen. Still would have been cool to see Neil and Jon meet!

In retrospect I wish I would have spent more time studying other great drummers and musicians in general. But finally figuring out a tough time change passage or intricate bit of independence on a rush song was always quite an accomplishment and definitely a whole lot of fun. I can't believe the amount of musicians this band inspired. Just phenomenal. RIP Neil.

I started to watch his left foot, looking for when he hits the trigger. I noticed that he would take his foot off the trigger, and instead of putting it down next door on the hi hat pedal, he would sometimes go past it to the left kick pedal. He didn't play it, just seemed to set his foot there for a second before going to the hats, or back to the trigger. You can see it repeatedly from 3:30 - 4:00. Wonder why he did that?
@CapstoneTider
@CapstoneTider 2 года назад
Really gets Next Level creative at 2:35. This is about as crude of a recording as you could get and it still sounds pristine. Has an effect triggered by his left foot. Guessing the middle position in between that and the bass drum is just a resting spot?

He was bombarded with thousands of letters he couldn't feasibly answer & apologized he could do it anymore. Granted, he's not as open as Geddy & Alex, but he's reserved & fame can get to a person like Neil. I'm sure he appreciated his fan in his own guarded way.
