Neil Young performs a cover of "Changes" originally by Phil Ochs at the Farm Aid concert in Saratoga Springs, NY on September 21, 2013. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.
For more information about Farm Aid, visit: farmaid.org/youtube
Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?

That's cool Neil Young spoke up to that guy. Entertainers are people just like us; they're not puppets. You pay for a ticket and just expect to listen to them " perform ". Live performances are the best. I appreciate those moments when the musician isn't playing and they're making the effort to simply communicate to the people in the audience. These unique musicians deserve our time and respect. Eventually, they perform the songs we want to hear and Neil Young sang Phil Ochs song to the tee. Awesome ...

My dad introduced me to Neil Young when I was a little kid, he always used to play "Needle and the Damage Done" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" on guitar, and I loved it. I'm almost 30 now, and Neil still continues to captivate me. So I have to thank my father (who luckily, is still around to enjoy Neil's music with me to this day) for showing me his incredible music so many years ago. I discovered Phil Ochs's music about a year ago, and everything I've found of his I've loved. Neil paying tribute to Phil is AMAZING.
@davidlenander
@davidlenander 10 лет назад
Did you know that "Cowgirl in the Sand" was partly inspired by Jean Ray Glover, who with her husband, Jim Glover, had been housemates with Phil Ochs when he first came to NY? Jim Glover had been part of a duo with Phil when they were college roommates and Glover taught Ochs to play the guitar. Jean had written (and later recorded a song about the Buffalo Springfield drug bust, "Topango road" on her third album with Jim, _People World_), and Neil commented on the lyrics, written in purple ink on gray paper.

This is a great song that Phil Ochs sang beautifully and melodiously. I didn't know what it would sound like by Neil Young. I realize that Neil sings everything well in his unique style. None of the gentleness of this song was lost.
@vsibirsky
@vsibirsky 9 лет назад
I think you stated this perfectly. This clipped style with a little "rest" between measures fractures the song. When Phil sang it there was a gentle flow that emphasized a legato melody. No words will describe it really but in Phil's repertoire this was just his magic. Thrilled that perhaps people might explore Phil's work after hearing this song. Silly comment at end of the tune... hey some people just talk too much... point made from singing the song... no comment necessary.

@oppothumbs1
@oppothumbs1 2 года назад
Not everyone one likes him for that. I am outspoken and you will not like me for that. The right side is not the Left either. I think Neil's music is better than the best but he doesn't need to lecture the audience here and could play more of what the audience paid for. And his wrongheaded political ideas (just too Left for reality - where has Leftist worked?) belie his sensitivity as shown in his great love of this song and Phil Ochs, the man, lyricist and melody maker of great renown. But he also sings this poorly, I mean sometimes Neil has a voice to die for but not that much here. It's a great great song but his guitar playing could be better and his voice is not up to the usual. He should have just played Phil's audio and shown a film.

Actually, last time Phil appeared in public (mentioned around 3:20) was not Carnegie Hall but at the large Vietnam victory rally/celebration in Central Park in 1975 after the independence of Vietnam was won, with Joan Baez and others. He sang "The War Is Over", perhaps his masterpiece. He was suffering from acute depression and probably bi-polar disorder; there were no psychotropic medications to help then, and pycho-therapy has improved much since too. He exited the world soon afterward. Great version, so faithful to Phil's spirit. Thanks (again) Neil.

Phil Ochs appreciated the advice from others in the industry. Dylan only did when he could use a song as his own without worry that they would say something to the affect of “hey, I wrote that song.” By then, Dylan had it copyrighted usually with no credit given to the songwriter who actually RE-wrote the song both words and music. He took advantage of those who he trusted, he had a plan from the day he arrived in New York City and his plan included to use whoever he trusted not to say those horrendous words, the Battle cry of Bob Dylan was and he achieved this thanks to the many who helped Dylan but gave their word backed by honor and friendship. Bobby, sadly, didn’t share that integrity..

I was very lucky to see him perform many times in the 60's and early 70's. later. His lyrics were profound, even more so, now 50-60 yrs later when one takes a look at the US and the state of the world overall. Sit by my side, come as close as the air Share in a memory of gray And wander in my words Dream about the pictures that I play of changes Green leaves of summer turn red in the fall To brown and to yellow, they fade And then they have to die Trapped within the circle time parade of changes Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind Visions of shadows that shine One day I returned and found they were Victims of the vines of changes The world's spinning madly, it drifts in the dark It swings through a hollow of haze A race around the stars A journey through the universe ablaze with changes Moments of magic will glow in the night Fears of the forest are all gone But when the morning breaks They're swept away by golden drops of dawn of changes Passions will part to a strange melody As fires will sometimes burn cold Like petals in the wind We're puppets to the silver strings of souls of changes Your tears will be trembling, now we're somewhere else One last cup of wine we will pour And I'll kiss you one more time And leave you on the rolling river shore

Neil Young calling Phil Ochs "one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived"...You cant' get more right than that! Thank you Neil for a beautful version of Phil's beautiful song. To quote Billy Bragg: "Phil Ochs inspires us still"

was fortunate to see Phil Ochs perform this in the Villiage more than once... I miss him so much... and also think of Jean Ray ..also gone... who was the first to do Phil Ochs songs along with then partner Jim Glover... and think of Dave Van Ronk ..also long gone... who walked the same streets as Phil, in the Village in the 60s

I too lost a friend to suicide last year. Thought I could have done something more,too, to reach him,to stop him. Be he made the horrible choice. He threw everything away in that moment, to run from himself,and his fear. Thanks Neil, for this great intro, and song. SO glad to be alive and to have been a part of this awesome day at SPAC!

Eco....thirty yrs working crisis has taught me...not so much folks are running from themselves and theirfear as you put it, more that...they have no more left,,,,,,,,and love and support just didnt get there in time. These acts...suicides, touch me in the deepest sad place...i do, however, get it. meg

Been a Phil Ochs fan for quite sometime now. I stumbled upon him about 8 years ago and i been listen to him ever since. To hear Neil Young, someone that I've been listen all my life sing one of his songs is just amazing. I love it when one of my favorite artist is a fan of an other artist I like and they do a great cover.

Every song Neil did this year was with purpose and inspiration. This one was the coup d' grace, and he explained why in the intro. This year was about Pete Seeger and the love that each member of the board shares for him. You could see it when they were all together onstage. The quality of the individual performances matters little in comparison to the magnitude of what was accomplished this year. Mark this one down.

Great job Neil, my first listen to Changes, the poetic lyrics in this masterpiece by the late Phil Ochs certainly hit home with great emotion.

I saw Phil Ochs at the Mariposa Folk Festival north of Toronto - no lame suit back then. It was pouring rain, and Phil was in a tent stage while the audience was getting soaked. So he told us to change places - we all crowded into the tent, and he kept playing in the rain for over an hour! What a great performer he was.
