Neil Young: Stephen Stills is a tormented artist (1988)

Neil Young comments on his long-time musical partner Stephen Stills, who played with Neil in Buffalo Springfield & CSNY. In this clip Neil talks about the infamous Stills Young tour that Neil abruptly ended with an “Eat A Peach” telegram.
Also mentioned is CSNY, who at this time were in the studio recording American Dream, a highly anticipated reunion album that never quite lived up to the hype.
I believe the person asking the questions is Laura Gross, a mainstay of Los Angeles radio back in the day.

@@Fordham1969 thanks for the hint. So I think the interviewer is Laura Gross. You can learn more about her here: Once upon a time”…oh, wait, my story? The nickel version, I guess. I love rock and roll, and I love creative writing, so after college, I put the two together and started writing articles about rock and roll, then began a radio show called Backbeat on college station KCSN, graduated to the then powerhouse LA radio giant KRLA, where I did interviews, marketing, promotions, and ultimately became on-air talent. After 4 1/2 whirlwind years interviewing everybody from Muhammed Ali to Smokey Robinson to Bob Hope and beyond, management changed, I (and everyone else at the station) got fired, and I started freelancing for radio syndicates like Dick Clark Productions, The Wolfman Jack Show, Drake Chenault’s The History of Rock and Roll, Casey Kasem’s famed Top 40. It was both challenging, trying to build enough of a client base to actually make a living, and thrilling. Interviewing top stars for the top shows. But I wanted to move on to television, and after 4 1/2 years of a very slow but continuous effort to get MTV, then in its infancy, to hire me, they finally did.

Stephen Stills is one of the ALL-TIME greats in the history of American Popular Music. I taught MUS 236: Survey of American Popular Music Traditions at Indiana State University last semester. It easily could have been two semesters, but it was only one. I only had time to get from the inception of the USA, the sources of American Popular Music from circa 1775-1825 through about 1970. I needed another semester to get into any depth, but I made sure (even though the author of the textbook didn't) to give Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young some time and love in my last lecture or two. The songs they wrote and performed (along with Dylan, Hendrix, James Brown, & Aretha) really encapsulated the mood of the Vietnam and Civil Rights era. Find the Cost of Freedom, Wooden Ships, Ohio, Almost Cut My Hair, Long Time Gone, Teach Your Children, etc. - and Stephen was the man at the mixing board for most of that... oh, not to mention For What It's Worth. Stephen's contribution to Rock n Roll is indelible. Period.

You can't be serious - I should teach this class - Question - Did you teach those Sycamores anything about Jimmy Rodgers , Django Rinehart , or Buddy Guy? I certainly hope so - Did you teach them that a large percentage came from upper class households ? Particularly the "Laurel Canyon " folks ? Did you teach them that despite his intentional distancing from this fact , Eric Clapton practically invented Heavy Metal - ( Cream 1966 - before Black Sabbath even thought about a getting signed ) there are so many stories out there which aren't true - The influence Peter Grant had + the fact Mick Jagger is a musician who happens to sing - and the virtuosity of Christopher Cross-

Anyone who are around the same age as Neil And Stephen and grew up during the Vietnam War era, understand friendship. Many young people and families were divided on issues confronting them in a daily basis. Not unlike today but for different reasons. Neil understands Stephen better than Stephen knows himself. Their music together and separately grows from the roots they established way back in the 60's. Helplessly Hoping

The albums have a very different quality to each other that make the two of the greatest albums of the early '70's. I don't think that the perfection of those two albums has ever been captures since. @@Jamie-1985In the mid 70's neither Ticketmaster nor Beaver Productions refunded ticket prices when purchased in advance at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport. I should add this is likely due to the behavior of concert-goers whom had been bringing fireworks into the building for years. Officials had been threatening to cancel concerts since the late 60's because of the bottle rockets and fire crackers. I have the mc's opening words permanently burned in my brain: "The fire marshall has asked me to announce that the use of fireworks inside the building is prohibited by federal law. If the use of fireworks continues the concert will be cancelled!" I attended more than a dozen shows in the mid to late 70's and this announcement was made at every single one. After I moved away in the early 80's they finally did cancel a show and the ensuing stampede resulted in the deaths of two and the hospitalization of many more. It wasn't all about peace and love the way we like to romaticize about it. (I still remember those announcements and the booing and hissing of 12,000 to 15,000 anxious fans that immediately followed after every one. Pretty sure I paid $15 a ticket for general admission. I paid to see Stephen Stills at Austin City Coliseum in the late ‘80s. His amp crackled once a few songs in, and he pulled his plug and walked off. Techs came out and messed with the amp, wires, etc., so that he came back out about 20 minutes later and played a few more songs. The amp crackled again. He pulled the plug, lifted his guitar over his head and cleared the strap, and slammed it down on the ground, walked off, and didn’t return. Tortured artist maybe, but it’s hard to forget that.

sort of his career low point. supposedly the drinking and drugs were pretty intense. he and crosby had about a decades of not the best output like 78-86. im a fan of the stills alone album and he seemed to bounce back in the mid to late 90s (sry after the storm and their other 80s/90/ abums not great but he killed it from like 66-77 with some missteps. when i saw him in the 00s he was awesome on many occasions.

To the best of my knowledge, Graham Nash HAS NOT at any time relished having Neil Young in the band, period. Quite the opposite. Nash was very relieved when Neil walked away from the band to continue his solo career, as Graham felt that Neil's voice and his musical vision did not meld well with the band's sound and style. It's a FACT that Nash loathes Neil Young's singing.

One of man's biggest baddies is "jealousy". I think Steve has always resented Neil's fame. That's the "problem". Don't get me wrong here.
