Honestly it’s just a style choice. There are pros and cons to playing that way all the time. Neil is elite af so he pulls it off flawlessly. You’ll generally develop more thumb and finger strength anchoring on the back of the neck with your thumb. It makes playing spread positions and legato a lot easier as well. But being able to toss that thumb over is going to help with control and dynamics in bending and pinch harmonics, as well as many riffs. Focus on what you can do, what is comfortable to you and make sure that you do that with good technique. If you never get better at putting your thumb over the neck you’ll at least have the other way mastered. You can also try a thinner neck. Happy playing! 🤘🤘
