The key scene in the movie “Neither Wolf Nor Dog” occurs at the Wounded Knee memorial in South Dakota, where victims of the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre are buried in a mass grave. Over the century-plus since then, Wounded Knee has come to represent all the injustices that Native Americans have faced at the hands of the U.S. government and was the site of a long and violent protest and siege in 1973. In the movie, a Lakota elder tries to explain the place to a good-hearted white American writer. During filming, director Steven Lewis Simpson took the script away and asked 95-year-old actor Dave Bald Eagle to speak from the heart. “I asked him to improvise the entire sequence,” Simpson said in a phone interview. “He was closer to Wounded Knee in his family line than his character in the movie. He lost ancestors there.” Bald Eagle, who died last year at age 97, turned in the movie’s most deeply personal scene. “At the end of the filming, he turned to (co-star Christopher Sweeney) and said, ‘I have been holding that in for 95 years.’ There was a weight to it, to see this old man welling up, and it’s 100 percent real. It’s a raw, powerful moment,” Simpson said. “Neither Wolf Nor Dog” will screen nine times at the Frontier Cafe from Friday through Nov. 30. Adapted from a novel by Kent Nerburn, the movie tells the story of a writer who gets lured into Native American life and culture by a Lakota elder. The movie is about the writer’s journey and shows the South Dakota landscape as a remote, harsh and beautiful place, full of mystery, wonder and heartache. Simpson made the movie with a crew of two over 18 days. He is distributing it himself and has successfully screened it across the country. This is the second screening in Maine. Railroad Square Cinema showed it in September. The key to the film’s success, he said, was getting Bald Eagle to play the elder. A World War II veteran and paratrooper who participated in D-Day, Bald Eagle acted in the 1940s and 1950s, worked as a stunt man and traveled Europe with a rodeo, capitalizing on his skills as a horseman. His death in 2016 drew international media coverage. Simpson took a chance on Bald Eagle. The actor had never taken on a leading role, and Simpson wasn’t sure what Bald Eagle would give him. But in his heart, Simpson knew Bald Eagle was the best actor for this job. “It seemed silly to do it without him,” Simpson said. “Dave was perfect. There were long passages of dialogue that I would struggle to remember at my age, but he never wavered from it. Sometimes it would take a long time to get scenes filmed for that reason. But whenever we filmed around Wounded Knee, he nailed it.
