@@JohnSmith-xx9th It's a mess because apartheid was far from the only issue in SA and Mandela never truly fixed anything aside from abolishing the Apartheid system. Apartheid allowed the minority race within that country to amass all the resources, and ownership within that country while the majority had nothing, and still has nothing to this day. This issue is going to have to be corrected one way or the other or the degradation of said country will continue, and things will get seriously violent. The sad thing is, the utter incompetence is probably the best thing for the minority group in SA right now. USA and Great Britain also supported South Africa, and so did Israel but for strategic reasons : after 1973 South Africa was the only country in Africa that continued having relationships with Israel. It has nothing to do with supporting the apartheid but keeping relationships with a State for political and financial reasons, as USA and Great Britain did. Not so fun fact : The main palestinian leader was antisemite and spent 4 years in Germany during the war, and did all he could to stop the Jews from entering Palestine during Holocaust encouraging Hitler to kill all the jews. I let you imagine what the jews would have become if Hitler had won the war... Later on, the arabs troups tried to destroy Israel Real shocker huh ??

Mandela remained on U.S. terrorist watch lists until 2008. In 1964, he was convicted of sabotage and treason, and wound up imprisoned until 1990. TIME later described the group’s activities from 1962 as “low-level guerrilla war.” Defending the shift in strategy as a last resort, Mandela said in one of his interviews from prison, “‘The armed struggle [with the authorities] was forced on us by the government.'” Members of the African National Congress are Communists

I remember watching this on TV back when I was 11 years old and falling absolutely in love with Madiba. I don't think South Africa had satellite TV back then, but I do remember having some access to CNN and Sky News broadcasts in the build-up to the Gulf War and I although I was only a little boy, I had already grown distrustful of the news as it was being fed to us by those channels based on "A" - the fact that all the Middle East really had that anyone else in the Western world could've been interested in was oil and was otherwise just a million square kilometer cat box and "B" - I couldn't understand why our own national news was always so matter-of-fact and straightforward (I don't think I knew the difference between objectivity and subjectivity yet) and the news as it appeared on CNN was always so steaming with emotion by comparison to ours. Beside that, I couldn't help but notice how much money seemed to be being spent on producing programs about almost nothing of any importance to anyone, but featured awesome action shots of fighter jets taking off and the B-52 Bomber stealthily flying through the air like the Batplane and all the crazy hectic music and stuff. Already I didn't get all the greed that seemed so obviously to drive decisions that were being reported on. It was weird. My dad was way into all of it. George Bush Sr. was one of my old man's heroes. Hell, I don't know. My dad had started bashing my face in almost every time he came home from a parents' evening at my primary school with my report. Maybe I didn't like them because my dad did like them. I just thought the whole America-will-make-everyone-do-what-it-wants-and-you-all-refuse-US-at-your-own-peril vibe was tyrannical and kind of like the way bullies do things. So I watched this and my dad muttered his way through the first half of it behind me on the sofa before storming out of the room halfway through in a huff about halfway through and leaving me to applaud him without even really knowing what I was applauding. We had it really good with Nelson Mandela. We had it pretty good with his successor Thabo Mbeki, too. Pity about the whole Jacob Zuma thing. But by the time we were halfway into Zuma's first term, we'd kinda lost our tether to the wider world altogether and Zuma's self-professed unschooled, undisciplined populist everyman kick managed to secure him nine years of South African presidency despite his starting out facing allegations of rape made by an HIV positive woman and his shaking it off with a "just take a shower and everything is fine." Man, what I wouldn't do for another Mandela , or at least for a return of his spirit to the current South African political sphere. Maybe President Ramaphosa's hiding that spirit up his sleeve somewhere and just waiting for the BRICS thing to happen before letting it out. That being said, Ramaphosa's a pretty serious businessman and VERY connected to the same things I recognized as symbols of evil when I was 11. But her, a guy can dream.

@bry8636
@bry8636 3 года назад
I think your citation is being misunderstood. It would appear by Mandela’s own answer, that his own morality changes from nation to nation depending on whether they support South Africa or not. As opposed to judging those nations’ leaders on how they lead. How can you support someone like Fidel who is unequivocally oppressing his own people? I can say this accurately and with full knowledge as someone who escaped Castro’s Cuba. Something Mandela should know plenty about. That said, I admire and respect Mandela. He is a giant of a man with a deep well of empathy. And it doesn’t change his original comment ‘political analysts make the mistake of thinking they’re enemies should also be ours’ It’s an accurate statement. But the question was driving at ‘how can you Mandela, given your own peoples’ struggles, support a regime that oppresses its own people?’ It was a clever dodge on Mandela’s part. He is not only a great leader but can play the political game as well. He does not want to make enemies of these supporters. Even when those supporters are doing the exact thing Mandela opposes directly. So they’re putting Mandela between a rock an a hard place. Should he disown support from immoral leaders whose very existence challenges their crusade of freedom? Who does that hurt? His own people who are now bereft of that support. So should Mandela take a stance against immorality over the short term fate of his people? I say yes, and it’s by far the more courageous thing to do. Again I have the utmost reverence for Mandela, but I don’t like seeing him play the politician, even if he is good at it. To put it another way, yes, you should bite the hand that feeds you if that hand is practicing the same acts that subjugated your own people. A tacit acceptance of their support is an acceptance of their own immorality.

@@bry8636 I disagree. Fidel, among others, provided aid in more than just rhetoric. Without which the ANC struggle may have stretched beyond the capacities of the independent movement. By answering as such, Mandela puts those taking the moral high ground in his shoes and highlights that specatators know nothing, and are able to make idealist judgements simply because they are not being oppressed. Acceptance of their support is a testament to the intensity of the struggle that black South Africans were going through, not acceptance of their immorality.

@bry8636 3 года назад

I must say, I’ve developed a newfound respect & admiration for the character of Nelson Mandela thanks to this video. It’s fascinating what a little history will tell you because without any context accompanied by the half-baked news some sources provide you, they paint this picture that those who are attacking are solely responsible for the tragedy. Almost as if they’re purposely omitting the oppression involved. My heart goes out to those who have to live near & within the atmosphere of war. You would think in this day & age of WMD standoffs that it would be a thing of the past, but nah, fighting is inevitable when common ground on common sense isn’t established. Cest la vie.

The world needs more leaders like Mandela in a very desperate way. It will take sacrifice in this world to achieve great things, peace for one thing. It’s been done before. He is one of the best examples of this. Thank you for your wisdom and courageous leadership Madiba. We are still learning from you ! Salut!

All inhabitants of the country during the British mandate period were known as "Palestinians" -- both Jews, and Arabs. All inhabitants, again, both Jews, and Arabs had Palestinian-issued passports. In the main, Arabs only began calling themselves "Palestinians" in the 1960s for political expediency. If you look at the United Nations' resolutions vis-a-vis the Arab-Jewish conflict, that body only began to call the Arabs "Palestinians" in 1970.
