If you want to pre-order for some reason: amzn.to/2Nz4FuF Time for the Neo Geo Mini, because SNK have been around for forty years. Blimey. Anyway, it's got Metal Slug and King of Fighters and all that.
Obligatory comment that people made handheld/mini consoles way before Nintendo ever did. Hell, Nintendo didn't even make it popular. The only reason people remember the NES/SNES classic was the ridiculous prices because they did their usual stock shortage thing.
Only when pidegon-english becomes the standard language of the universe will we need to know that: mary-o needs to twice button use throw left side and down button up punch right side. If pause to win, game to flash and start again with music.
It wasn't tax paperwork? It was a decree "celebrating the anniversary of the coronation of Ptolemy V Epiphanies"... i listed the gifts, tax reductions and restorations he had made throughout his reign but taxation was not the main focus.... it was huge and displayed in a temple... it was not however something everyone would have had a copy of.
Since I haven't found a comment in regards to the joystick without microswitches, what is the issue with this? It sounds like the joystick on that controller is a modern-style one meant for full 360-degree translation rather than the 8 directions (I presume) microswptches would have. It looks like the sort of joystick that all modern game systems and PC controllers have, since they're designed for full 3-D games in mind. If that's true, and the issue becomes that the games register up and down movements at too wide of a degree of angles, wouldn't it be solved by changing the rangle of angles registered to particular directions? That's what's being done with modern games where up and down do something different from left and right, like 2-D fighting games and falling blocks puzzle games.
Manuals as phrasebooks - Hattie Hayridge (blonde Holly from Red Dwarf) had a great joke in her old standup along the lines of "Evey box of Tampax has this sheet of paper that just folds out and out and out and it basically says, in every language on Earth, "Insert into vagina", so I use it as a phrasebook on Club 18-30 holidays - "What are you mate? Greek? Right read this and come with me"" Absolutely no contribution to the Neo Geo review but my brain just regurgitates random bits of 90s standup at me rather than doing anything actually useful.

That cancer-and-reprodutive-harm warning is because of some poorly designed legislation in California, United States. Basically if a product might be sold there, and is made of matter that exists in our dimension, it has to have that warning.
Ah yes - Proposition 65. The bungled legislation that, instead of working as intended to compel corporations to reduce and prevent the inclusion or introduction of harmful substances into their products, results in just about everyTHING and everyWHERE in California having a sign warning that you may get cancer... Some of the funniest include signs warning that the magical place that is Disneyland may contain substances known to cause cancer... I’m only surprised that these signs don’t have an ancillary sign next to them warning that “THAT SIGN MAY CONTAIN SUBSTANCES KNOWN TO....”
@bigevilworldwide1 They're not trashing California. I've just never once seen a warning saying _"This product contains chemicals known to the State of Oklahoma to cause cancer and birth defects (or other reproductive harm)."_ Sorry to break your bubble, but I think the cancer warning is a true "only-in-California" phenomenon.
A big selling point for the Nintendo minis is that Nintendo games don't have ports in other companies' consoles, add to that the company's draconian rules on ROMs and emulators and you have an easy way to play old Nintendo games that isn't on PC, something desirable even for your average Joe. SNK has ported their most famous games to hell and back, with good results sometimes (the PS2 compilations for example), the PC versions being very recent too. There's no reason for anyone to buy this, purists won't bother and people who want a nostalgia trip likely have already bought their favorite games with a previous port. I could understand the purpose if they put very old and hardly ported games in there, but it's basically a "Greatest Hits" compilation. I also don't understand why going with the "mini-screen" gimmick, especially for games which pride and valor was the detailed pixel art and big-ass sprites. Even Nintendo, a company that has a history of success with portable consoles and small screens, didn't go for that stupid idea. It's like a Neo-Geo "console" made by people who never actually played SNK games.
I wish more people knew this. It's the same reason Nintendo emulators are so popular, I don't need a Megadrive/Genesis emulator because pretty much everything except Sonic was released for my Amiga so I got to play most Sega games, Nintendo on the other hand have their exclusivity decree that means you need an actual Nintendo or an emulator to see what all the fuss is about!
that would be insane today Without the inflation omg in the late 80s early 90s would be insanity and being in canada CAD rn our dollar is 0.75cents to the USD, it would probs be like 1600cad with inflation and currency im guessing
Just watched MJR's review posted today. Official response to MJR reaching out about lack of microswitches was "clicky thumbsticks is very hard to make."
@Martin Schmidt Actually there are controllers that do have micro switches but they are expensive. The Razer Wolverine Ultimate is over $100 and it has micro switches on the face buttons and shoulder buttons for example.
If you have a 3D printer, or know someone that does have one, you could measure the analogue stick pot, and print out an octagonally notched inlay for the stick to rest in. The GameCube did this and it worked a treat, I'm frankly amazed that no-one, not even Nintendo copied this innovation going forward, given that really improves the usability of an analogue stick (plus it makes a really satisfying sound when you roll it). Mind you, this won't fix it looking awful on the TV, but at least it'll be playable.
The closest I ever got to a Neo Geo home system was seeing the huge box in the mall once. I ended up playing a couple games in different arcades like Samurai Shodown, Sengoku and World Heroes but was limited at home to rentals of the ports that came to SNES. Years later I got into emulation and played more thanks to MAME.
It's still bananas to me that I can emulate NeoGeo games on my Xbox Series S. And with the custom Unibios, you can even pick what region the game loads in, and if you want the arcade or home console mode. It's legit still amazing to me. Like, emulation in general is one of those things that, despite using it constantly, still takes me a second to wrap my head around. Like, I can emulate arcade games, home console games, even Gamecube, Wii, and PS2. I can take every game I played as a kid, every single one, and load it up on my Xbox. From fuckin Atari 2600 to NES and SNES, Gameboy, GBA, Saturn, and way more. I even get to try out games I never had played as a kid. Like the Commander Keen games, and Giana Sisters on Dos. It's just a bit nuts to me.
The whole idea of home consoles, starting with the Atari 2600 (and there might even have been an earlier one with the same idea), is that of interchangeable cartridges, and therefore an unlimited amount of games on the same device. Now we are going back to the time when there's only a fixed amount of hard-coded games in the gaming device.
muryoken muryo bet it wasn't as good as the ngpc stick. I was interested in tne ngx until it become known tne emulation was a bit iffy, what is the point in that
tyler roberts whats the point? It was more money because of the branding and they just cocked it up, kinda misses the point to spend extra on an official product over a generic emulation console and then have to crack it with homebrew stuff to make it useable. Those little white handhelds the A300 or something like that were far more appealing, although I've not bought a homebrew handheld since the GP2X.
The Neo Geo was very well advertised in the UK for a machine that no-one knew anyone that owned it. In a lot of the adverts as the market leader, the Megadrive, yet no-one ever witnessed one.
Love the longer videos you've been putting out recently. A RU-vidr that cares about content and hasn't sold out like the rest. My favourite channel for the longest time. love you Ashens! 😎
"When are ya getting married?!? I met this cute young man at the supermarket and you might be in his league" "Have you eaten yet? I made you a pie!" It's like a reverse tomagatchi
Fun story about Super Sidekicks: for some reason there was a version with 'Portuguese' text and sound samples. (by which I mean it was a sort of cross between Latin american Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.) That was the one most often found around Portuguese arcades and resort game rooms in the late 90s/early 2000s I''m now getting nostalgic for it just thinking about it :(
Him continuing to be frustrated yet trying to stop himself from speaking any further is also me when I try to shut myself up because I know I've talked too much about something XD
There used to be this place in a shopping center in the city I grew up in that was called DieHard Games. You could pay for time to play on a ton of consoles with tons of games for each console. They had a Neo-Geo there with all of the games available at the time. It opened in 1993 or so and went bust after 2 or 3 years.
Nah it has to do with the sound chip they used. They would adjust the pitch to fit different game's soundtracks and that would then affect how the Neo Geo opening sounded.
In 1993 my local Toys R Us was trying to get rid of their Neo Geo's and had the system on sale for $40. Games were $5. I convinced my mom to buy all of it.
7:33, ah the Neo Geo Pocket, and the Neo Geo Pocket Color, I love that system. I've not been able to watch the last few twitch streams and have asked since the RU-vid streams for Dr S.Ashen to play the Neo geo Pocket games live. If Ashens hasn't played it live yet then I eagerly await that stream, if it has been done.... Then I'm disappointed in myself for not knowing and will sacrifice my life remaining sleep time to watch it right now.
Highly entertaining & informative video. Thanks for bringing to us. Used to have the original brilliance of the full size home machine back in the Nineties & played the addictively brilliant 'Nam 1975 all the time. As good / bad this little throw back is, it is not truly a Neo Geo experience without 'Nam 1975. What a shame !
Funny thing is they released a replica Neo Geo CD controller for the PS3 a few years ago and that has a micro switched stick. Really nice control actually, glad I picked one up
So kinda inverse to the NeoGeoX. From great controls and crap emulation to great emulation and crap controls. Jesus H Tapdancing Christ, are they ever going to get anything right?
I know a guy who's managed to install an octagonal gate to give the gamepads some click, hopefully he can start mass producing those because it's as simple as slotting them onto the joystick
@@SNARC15 Neo Geo MVSX. Neo geo X was hot trash from 2012. The Neo Geo mini is effectively an AES emulator since the games on it are based on the AES versions (finite credits is the only big difference i think).
Twinkle Star Sprites only being on the Japanese version is a sin, and God only knows what they were thinking with Top Players Golf over Neo Turf. The less said about the controllers the better.
Metal Slug X is a remix of Metal Slug 2 - the slowdown is gone, the difficulty has been ramped up, and it also has various other additions and improvements.
According to Amazon, they are going to re-release the Neo Geo mini to include a MayFlash controller converter allowing people to use different controllers, which could solve the problems with the control somewhat, however it's going to cost an extra £50.00 to the cost of the console, but you might be able to get it separately or the price would go down a bit eventually for that particular bundle.
Hey Stuart there's a Limited Edition Christmas version just released (being red with two red controllers, power cable, HDMI cable, stickers, two screen protectors and a slip cushion) as well as a mixture of titles from both the Japanese and International versions, as well as a few extra titles added in for a total of 48 games. ( titles are exclusives to this version which includes The Super Spy you were talking about, League Bowling and Savage Reign. I doubt the HDMI output and controllers would have improved that much, but still interesting info. :)
A shame that SNK have learnt NOTHING in the 40 years of their existence. They are still giving us expensive consoles with massive flaws in them. You would think that they would learn after the Neo Geo X and Tommo fiasco but no. I bet you can't even plug in that large Neo Geo X arcade joystick to that thing, not that you wanted to as playing the Mini on your TV is pretty dreadful. They'll no doubt probably going to release a version 2 (with different games on it) with a USB cable to fix the picture of the first one, but that's doubtful if people are going to complain that they'll pay well over a hundred of their currency for something that's barely playable. Tried too hard to be like Nintendo and failed miserably! It's like the 90's all over again.
Seriously. Back when this was first announced, I was looking at it going "What the hell were they thinking?" It's a gimmick, and a badly-designed one at that. I mean, say what you will about the Neo Geo X, the *idea* behind it was great. It was just totally cocked up in execution. But this thing? It was a bad idea from the outset that apparently only got worse as it went through R&D. :-/
The novelty of it being a mini arcade cabinet is a gimmick, though it does make sense for something like this. They were trying to cash in on those other mini arcade cabinets that had famous 80's games on them like Pac-Man and Galaxian, so it's easy to see where the idea came from. If it were a tad bit larger with more space for the joystick and controllers, then it would have been better and slightly worth while as far as the price tag is concerned, but it isn't. Sadly like the Neo Geo X the execution is piss poor and it doesn't really justify the disgustingly high price tag for it either.
Most of these games are available on modern day consoles vis emulation, though some people still use unofficial emulators and ROM's that go with them. You would think SNK would make a product witch operates like an arcade emulator that is official and has good presentation, sadly they haven't as yet as this video demonstrates, at least as far as HDMI is concerned.
You wouldn't believe just how popular King of Fighters is in Mexico. I'm talking crowds of kids and tweens surrounding a single cabinet watching a match going on/waiting on their turn to play.
That's nothing compared to the insane popularity in Mainland China where KOF 97 reigns supreme in that country. Don't forget bootlegs and even official KOF games developed by Chinese game companies.
Officiallt liking on a dead game much? My ps1 version is better. Arranged Music, Menu Slection, Art Gallery and Boss availability. Even sega saturn and psx would stomp the arcade version
As far as the TV output is concerned--is it possible it's outputting at natural NeoGeo resolution, and it's your TV doing a really poor job of upscaling it? It would explain why it works better through your capture card.
Martin Schmidt The point of the micro switches are for a authentic arcade experience. If you don’t have them, you might as well get a raspberry pi and port the games onto there. It’s cheaper.
I think he should've captured gameplay for each of the games. It would've made the review part more interesting then just staring at the back of a box.
@@mickeymouse12678 I guess I wasn't thinking of that because there such old games. Also It'd be a pretty bullshity thing for a company to copyright claim because he's clearly reviewing it, and should be covered under fair use. But I guess it's not even worth risking it.
@Martin Schmidt stop replying to evrey comment just because you have one dossent make this console good its mediocre stop trying to defend. this review is pretty good and its not bashing.
“Like someone’s smeared their balls with Vaseline and dragged them across your television” The single most informative line I’ve ever heard in a review. This is why I come to Ashens!
This just isn't true. Electronics Boutique, babbage's -- they would always have Neo Geo in stock. I mean always. Now if it was selling like hotcakes is a different matter entirely
This comment is totally false. An Electronics Boutique near me carried them. They were even even more common in mom and pop shops as well as import shops in my nearby China/Korea town. They were also readily available second hand.
Yeah, that and Windjammers are super upsetting exclusions. I have them both on Switch but I want to pick this up for a conversation piece on my desk at work and would have adored playing a quick round or 20 of Windjammers
Was excited about this. Won't be getting it now. There is no way I'm buying a system that's output looks like crap and has no decent external controller.
If you have a PS4 Arcade stick I believe they are selling adapters to hook it up to but at that point you'd be better off waiting for the Neo Geo game compilation they are launching for consoles and using your stick there
But the unit by itself seems to be pretty nice. I'm tempted as I am a sucker for mini arcade cabinets. The rest can be done for cheap on any emulator box anyway.
No Neo Turf Masters? Seriously? EDIT: No, this is inexcusable. Seriously. It's the perfect multiplayer game to pass the thing around and it's a ton of fun. What the fuck were they thinking?
Someone probably commented already, Metal Slug X is basically Metal Slug 2 but improved quite a bit because the original game wasn't very well optimized and X also includes stuff from Metal Slug 3 if I recall correctly. It's basically Metal Slug 2 Master Quest
Which is still cheap even for home release. These games were many megabytes in size at a time when your average game was just 256KB and even read-only memory was expensive as all hell back then! You were paying for a big fat slice of state-of-the-art ROM that was several times larger than the RAM in a typical computer. If GTAV had come out at a time before DVD's, Blu-Rays and digital download it would require 130+ CD's, that is a lot of plastic that would have to be covered by the retail price...
