I Cant exactly put my finger on it, but Reggie just seems like the nicest dude. You gotta love when people are so positive about things they love, its a shame seeing so many people who used to love gaming, act so jaded about it these days. Youre awesome Reggie!
They should re-release this as a novelty console, like the Atari flashback. It probably would be really cheap to make nowadays, and if you bundled a bunch of games with it it could sell as a good cheap gift item.
You're always my first search on RU-vid when I buy a new console, and this video certainly didn't disappoint! Exclusive Metal Slug and Sonic games? Awesome. Hope that you'll do the promised part two of this video soon.
I would start with Ghost in the Shell where I did: the original 1995 movie. It made me a fan after 30 minutes, it was so good! They updated the movie's CGI effects in 2008 and it's great too.
I bought mine back in 1999. I played the hell out of KOF R-2 and Samurai Showdown 2. I still have it, along with all my games. It remains my primary handheld gaming system. I do not own 3DS or anything, just my Neo Geo.
I really wanted one of these but I got a Dreamcast for Christmas that year and by the time the next one rolled round, they were already discontinued. Well, 24 years on, I bought my first ever Neo Geo Pocket Color yesterday along with Sonic and Mini Puzzle Bobble. Can’t wait to play it and pick up more titles.
I bought my NGPC soley for *Rockman: Battle & Fighters* (hidden gem truely) and I was totally amazed about the system! We never had this console in Germany so nobody ever saw this and very few heard of it. *But it is so great and it was ahead of its time*!
Great showcasing of an obscure video. I can confirm that the neo geo pocket color was indeed sold at GameStop, as that is where II bought my first unit. I used to work at one as an assistant manager 14 years ago. We got only one shipment of games in. The product was given limited shelf space, and then it disappeared into obscurity. I currently own a us CIB neo geo pocket set
I bought a Neo Geo Pocket Color because of this video. It is a very cool little gem and has a bunch of cool games. I got lucky and bought a european copy of Faselei! complete in box and honestly it is a must own game for the system. There are two downsides to this system: 1) The Bulk. The Neo Geo Pocked color is a lot bigger than either of its two competitors the Gameboy Color and the Wonderswan Color. 2) the games aren't nearly as polished as the Bandai Wonderswan Color's fighting games. The Bandai Wonderswan imo has much better gameplay and graphics especially for the fighting games. The upsides are many upsides for the system: 1) the games are very cheap if you want to buy them cart only. You can even buy new games cart only for the system (like Reggie said there were four pack games and resellers buy the four pack for expensive games like Last Blade, Faselei!, and gals fighters) the chaff is then sold off for a few bucks. Most NGPC games i buy are between $3 and $12 on amazon. 2) the joystick works very well for the fighting games and other games that use 8-way directional movement. 3) the system can be found for pretty cheap as well. 4) the four pack of games usually sell for $20 or $25 if they have common games in them. I have 14 games for the system now and on average (with the exception of Faselei!) I have spent about $5 on each game. Picking five must have games for the system from what I own (I haven't found a copy of Gals fighters or Biomotor Unitron yet) 5) Metal Slug 2nd Mission (graphically superior to MS1st Mission but it does have a lot of slowdown when there is too much on screen. 4) SNK vs Capcom Match of the Millenium (it has a lot of mini games and unlockable characters, the other fighting games Samurai Showdown 2 and King of fighters R2 just aren't as fun imo 3) Metal Slug 1st Mission 2) Beast Buster -Dark Arms 1999 (a very good rpg that uses guns and some melee weapons and it has a gothic setting similar to castlevania games) 1) Faselei! (a very fun hybrid turn based/real time strategy RPG. you can deck out your Toy Soldier (mech, gundam, zoid whatever you want to call it) with a huge assortment of missiles, rockets, rifles, machine guns, shields, armor, etc.) The down side with Faselei! is the cost. most people sell it cart only used for $100ish. if you check every so often some do go cheaper but it is very rare for one to sell for less than $100. I paid about $110 with shipping for my copy complete in box it just takes a lot of patience to track down a copy of the game at a reasonable price. But beware do not buy the Japanese copy of the game the NGPC can not translate the game from Japanese to english (some games do have that feature though) and the Japanese game usually sells for fairly cheap. There are also other great games for the system like Pocket Tennis Color, Puzzle Bobble Mini, Sonic Pocket Adventure. I like this system a lot and recommend it to anyone that thinks the games sound interesting. Personally I do like the Bandai Wonderswan Color more but it is a lot more expensive to collect for.
I have to disagree here. First the NGPC is way more ergonomic and feels really better on hands than both the consoles you ve mentionned. It's perfectly designed to fit on any hand. i do own any Nintendo handheld from original GB to GBC to GBA SP and DS (as well as a lynx and a game gear) and the NGPC beats them all when for both ergonomy and playability. Last but not least, a NGPC Slim version does exist (only released in japan) and it feels even better and lighter for the hands and is simply the greatest handheld ever.
The Star Wars posters are in the order of my FAVORITES when sitting on the futon playing games. It all makes sense when you are actually kicking back in the Game Room...trust me :)
He doesn't have a RU-vid channel that he regularly posts to.. However, he's going to be one my channel quite a bit. We're working on another series of Hidden Gems...coming soon!
No backlight but it's screen is high reflective. Even in dim lights, I can see the screen. And with a nice light over head, the screen is so bright and crisp looking
It's almost criminal that you didn't get to mention "SNK vs Capcom: Fight of the Millennium" nor, "SNK vs Capcom: Card Fighter" (I think that was more of the Pokemon killer for the NGP.). Both phenomenal games and the reason I still bust mine out to play from time to time. Also, besides as Reggie has stated that TRU carrying the system there, Kay Bees Toys store also carried it (and eventually was clearing them out when nobody was buying them) as well as Montgomery Wards, which is where I got mine at. Great vid and would love to see an update with more games!
only recently have I decided to dive into to the neo geo pocket and check out some games and reviews and when I seen Metal Jesus poped up with game recommendations I clicked this video first!! always enjoy your videos brother ! love the show man
Awesome video guys....I was overseas in the Navy and saw this in the stores there...I believe it was November, no date, 1998. I was in Yokosuka Japan. Wanted one so bad too, but everyone's big thing was to buy a 8mm video cam with a swivel LCD so we could watch movies in our bunks. Rock on Fellas!!!!
I am so stoked you did a video on the neo geo pocket color. It is one of my favorite handhelds. It definitely has the best thumbstick of any handheld. Love that clicking noise. I have a cib copy of rockman battle and fighters (japan only) that I have been wanting to do a video review on. I havn't made any videos yet, but you have inspired me metal jesus. I plan on making my first video very soon. Thanks metal jesus expect a christmas card this year....or i guess that be a birthday card for you.
Dude! I really appreciate this video. I am a huge Neo Geo fan and I am looking at getting into Neo Geo pocket. This video gives me great place to start looking for games. Thank you!
The fact that there's so many 2nd hand PS2 games in the shops proves that it was a really popular console back in the day. I think the PS2 is still popular amongst collectors. Sure there are a lot of 2nd hand PS2 games in the shops, but that's because so many were produced and so many everyday people bought them, and have now traded them in/sold them as they think these old games are now crap, and they have moved on to the latest stuff.
I personally love my NG Pocket Color. The first party SNK games are top shelf, and all the third party games are great too. In particular, I love Fatal Fury R1, King of Fighters R2, and Capcom Vs SNK. Everybody loves Reggie, he should have his own channel.
very underated system. I got a neo geo pocket color a while back complete in box for about 14 bucks. I also was able to get the UK version of evolution complete in clamshell and manual.I was told that that one was/is rare aswell. I have not been able to come across another one. Do you guys know anything about it? Really liking your channel. Keep 'm coming!
Great video. Bought one in the UK and wish I'd never sold it! Screen was superb considering it wasn't backlit but Metal Slug, Neo Turf Masters and Sonic were all absolutely brilliant. A great console - a true hidden gem
SNK vs Capcom Card Fighter Clash, Sonic Pocket Adventure, KOF R2, Fatal Fury 1st Contact, and of course, SNK vs Capcom: Match of the Millenium. Love this library of mine for my Neo Geo Pocket Color.
Hell Yeah, good video. I really enjoy when Reggie is on the show. Very cool dude. Also a very informative video. I barely knew anything about the NeoGeo. Now you know.
I had this and the gameboy color growing up and I can say that screen crushed the gameboy colors you can see how crispy it is in the video. I miss that thing.
Dude! I had one of these back in like 9th grade, this thing was so awesome i got the multi blue colored one (not the camo) with Metal Slug 1st mission and Sonic Pocket for my 15th birthday!
Almost forgot about Pac Man, it comes with a red rubber ring that goes into the groove around the thumb stick. It restricts the movement to a 4 way direction.
Great overview guys - I didn't own a Neo Geo Pocket Color for long when I had one in my collection - I'd still list it as one of my favourite handhelds though especially as it bought Metal Slug onto the portables :D
I'm soooo happy I just picked this up again. Probably the best handheld I've ever played for fighting games. I remember saying how this was better for the SNK/Capcom fighting games than the console counter parts. I remember actually being dangerous with Zangief with this thing. An amazing forgotten console. Thank you Metal Jesus!
Would've loved to have seen the second video to this. I'm considering picking up a NGPC and it's nice to see other people talk about systems first before I dive into em.
The NGPC is the absolute GREATEST Handheld Gaming Machine EVER. From the perfect size and ergonomy of the console (which fits so much better in hands than any game boy IMO) to the terrific micro switch joystick, it's pure heaven gameplay and design wise. It also has very unique games you won't find on any other console like Dark Arms : Beast Buster and Faselei.
reggie is such an awesome dude. i loved the neo geo pocket, that little joypad has to be the best stick i've felt on a handheld ever, besides perhaps the vita. yet that came out 13 years later so , you can't compare apples to oranges. i really hope you guys also do a vid on gameboy color thoug. besides the typical titles like G/S/C, mario deluxe and oracle of seasons, theres a TON of hidden gems on the systems, yet for some reason it tends to be the most obscure of the gameboy versions
In the beginning of the video, Reggie mentions that he didn't see this at Gamestop and it was mostly sold at Toys R Us. When the system launched I purchased mine at a Software Etc. (which later became Gamestop). I have the gray version and still have fun with it today. Several great games on the system including SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium and the Metal Slug series.
when anyone mentions the most underrated systems (that's usually the Dreamcast even though I think it's rated pretty highly), this is my #1. Sonic, Metal Slug, KoF, and Samurai Showdown are all really good versions that don't take them seriously. Then there's match of the melenium, probably the best hand held fighter. I have a hard time thinking of a bad game for it and all the games ozed character. The battery life was pretty amazing and the screen is easy to see even without a back light. Yet so few people knew about it back in 2000. This is a great system to pick up.
NG pocket color trending on ebay for like $30usd and games are dirt cheap. its a FANTASTIC system for collectors going through a broke period to collect for. the only 2 games ive got on the system is samurai showdown 2, and card fighters clash. ive never really felt the need to get more, but i should they go so cheap!
My suggestions would be Samurai Showdown II, Fatal Fury First Contact, SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters Clash 2: Expand Edition (Japanese only), Ogre Battle Gaiden (Japanese Only), and Last Blade: Beyond the Destiny. I was a store manager at Babbages (before Gamestop took them over), and we had pre orders of the Neo geo Pocket, the adapter that you can hook into the dreamcast, and I fell in love with the system! If it had a backlight, I think it would have competed fine with the Gameboy Color.
The best wrestling game SNK ever made, and one of the best portable wrestling games period is Big Bang Pro Wrestling. It was a Japanese exclusive, but if your NGPC is in English, it does play in English. It's pretty rare, but not that expensive because a lot of people don't really care about old wrestling games. Still, one of my favorites on the NGPC!
The only next gen console I am considering is the PS4. It's cheaper, the most powerful and doesn't have the creepy camera always watching you. I'll probably pick up a WiiU at some point next year when more games are out for it.
Got mine years ago. Only one game for it. Looking to expand on the games though. Not played it in years but still in great working condition. Very underrated system.
I never played the Neo Geo Pocket Color when they came out but after watching this video I went out and bought one as well as then games and I have to admit, it's a really fun hand held. Thank you so much for posting up the video! -ConsoleGeek,com
Bless Emilio, sounds like a great friend. :) One of my friends had the NGP around 2000-2001 and he really liked it. I never quite got into it but I remember him playing the Sonic game on it. I'm pretty sure he had Metal Slug too, but I don't remember anything else in particular. Personally I probably won't collect for it as I'd gravitate to WonderSwan and/or Game Gear, but it seems like a great handheld!
Metal Jesus is the man. I can't wait for the NeoGeo Pocket Hidden Gems video. I just dug up mine from 2002. It's still in great condition. If you don't own one and would like to I'd be happy to donate it to you Metal Jesus! I'm a huge fan of the show!!
Damn you and Reggie have the dopest collection besides car Game collecting has got to be the coolest not only do they make a room look amazing aesthetically they all have a purpose and function.
Metal Jesus has some cool friends. Always great when Reggie is on. Who else thinks that an episode of I Hate You with MJR, Drunken Master Paul and Reggie NEEDS to happen?!!
