Really nice to move into another area away from Europe and the Middle East. Would love to see some exploration into the Neolithic cultures in Southeast Asia which this episode seem to indicate as being connected to an Ancient Chinese predecessor.

I've loved settling on this lesson & am happy to hear your thoughts. I'm just a really old Eskimo still learning about our world but I've just been so stuck on believing my roots go back to Mongolia. I've watched your show 3 times now to try to pick up the bits I didn't firs catch. The Balkans? Partly on the Mediterranean, right? I am 100% sure that the Neolithic Revolution did spread west to the Balkans, but significantly later than the Levant (what is now Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Jordan). I've not read about the Neolithic Cultures in the Balkans.

Anton-Scott Goustin there are major neolithic cultures in Balkans, Vinča, Varna, Butmir. And also Lepenski vir, which is more mesolithic though.

Btw, I’m from Balkans and gotta say that westerners have no clue about balkans prehistory. Only scholars know because they studied specifics about prehistory. Cultures that I mentioned above are seriously MAJOR cultures 😉

I noticed when discussing the Longshan Culture, the black pottery is described as the clay itself being black. From my studies at Pitt in Anthropology dept and the work on pottery we did there, the black comes from the firing process and not from the clay itself. If it is fired without oxygen then the black color is produced. This can be seen from the work here in the US from the SW where there are incredible examples. it is an easy enough process to do in a pit fire and would start off as a mistake or in natural variation in firing and then could be cultivated from then on to produce the desired results.

@Jon Willig well.....many think ainu could have originated partly from the Jomon people (One of the Ancestors of Modern Japanese, with the highest dna being from yayoi people). They original ainu might have come north from around siberia, then settled in hokkaido, and interacted with jomon. But it gets complicated.... Ainu are still somewhat related to Yamato, but are different from nearby east asians like Chinese and koreans

The earliest form of Chinese writing, found on the Oracle Bones, dates back to the Shang period, ca 1600 BCE. You may do with that information what you will.

Not really. They did have at least a form of proto-symbols dating back 6000 years, but that doesn’t indicate a writing system and would be predated by almost a thousand years in any case by early European and Mesopotamian symbols.

If we consider the pattern of writyen language found as symbols in neolithic China is not the evidence that it's the seed to all other languages. In mesopotamia we don't see any early pattern if written language in neolithic period for the later full grown written language which appears to one strong suggestion that it wasn't the language developed there but brought by those who came.

Excellent vid. It is funny how we trace culture through pottery being the black pottery that spread through out Ancient lands that seem to tie trade routes together as well as some culture I will give them that. But in archeologic assumptions I like to ponder with today's reality of what one day they will probably consider the Coca Cola culture being replaced by the plastic bag culture and emerging both from the zippo lighter culture. LOL! Looking back it seems like today all we can hope for is some organization of the chaos and an acknowlegement that we will never truly know but a whisper of what truly was. Keep up the good fight and let's keep digging!

yeah think why this subjects are fun and easy. lot of room for imagination. due they are using carbon dating and ground sequencing. so its has its inner logic. but the social assumption from physical goods seems entirely speculative to me.(they draw conclusions from later culture state to its earlier states)

There's no unified "Neolithic Chinese" culture, since at that time China was very diverse, drastically different cultures and peoples existed from north to south. In the north around the Liao River and the Yellow River areas, people mostly cultivated millet, and it's likely that one group of those millet cultivators emerged later as the Huaxia or Sinitic people. In the Yangtse area people cultivated rice, and they were likely the ancestors of Hmong-Mien, Tai-Kradai, Austroasiatic, and Austronesian peoples. And further south in the Pearl River area and the Southwest, there were Hoabinhian hunter-gatherers that hunted boars, deers, buffaloes and gathered taros.

I am surprised that silk is mentioned in connection with civilisations in 4000 BCE. Common attribution for silk industry is the Shang Dynasty in 2000+ BCE.

The picture you are showing around 5:00 with different tools are Jomon Japan. It was confusing when the subject matter was neo lithic China. Perhaps they are similar to ones used in China still I would like you to make at least a mention of origin of images and why they are chosen.

Similar criticisms can be put for the bronzes illustrating various talk points, and the etched illustrations which are culturally incorrect. Furthermore the illustrations of the bronze workers suggests a lack of sophistication in clothing style and design that is not consistent with any envisioning of the clothing and weaving techniques used by the peoples that subject to your discussion.while the archeological record cannot show details of daily life, there are historic practices that go hand in hand with mud brick and rammed earth building that echo the past. Whats more, In Xi'an is a a well known 6000 yer old neolithic village excavation, with many interesting finds and between Chongqing and Chendgdu lies a 3000? y.o. bronze culture (Sanxingdui) which seems to have no literary record or cultural parallel. It surprises me that neither of these were picked up.

@19:25 Given the genetic evidence and linguistic evidence pointed out by Sagart that the Kra-Dai language family is a sub-family of Austronesian, and is a sister language family of Malayo-Polynesian languages, having branched out of Proto-Austronesian a little earlier than the southward Austronesian expansion by first expanding westward back on to the Asian mainland, I might it much more likely that the Majiabeng peoples were the ancestors of the Kra-Dai language family, and they continued moving southward towards mainland South East Asia.

@Ali Kılıç The Sinitic tribes (that became the Han Chinese) lived as nomads with temporary cave houses. Some still do today. Agriculture was re-invented by the proto-austronesians in China (rice and fox-tail millet) but they were driven out by the invading Sinitic nomads. Anatolia was probably the fabled Atlantis. Too bad, it was greekified and then turkified. The original cultures are wiped out so it presents more challenge in terms of Anthropology.

@@wenbo595 only ceramics pottery, because fertile crescent there was plenty of Rocky,sandy area & there was shortage of big wooden tree to burn to making ceramic pottery. Fertile crescent area developed their many types pottery from rock like alabaster,aragonite,calcite ,baryte,feldsper, kyanite etc. They are used semi-precious stone to making luxury artifacts. They are used ☀️ sun dried brick in earlier times for sane reason.

I find it strange that settlements in china seem to have started around 5000 BC while cities have been built in the near east 10000 BC I assume that the nature in china has eroded earlier settlements. Then again, cultures in the americas seem to have never mastered iron metallurgy

It's seems likely that the first modern humans to leave Africa around 70,000 years ago had many such concepts as astronomy, tool technology and complex ritual belief systems. These memes spread across Europe and Asia,and then into the Americas changing somewhat but similar mostly, but often the same at the core.

I dunno where all these "not from africa" people came from, but it seems they are in every video talking about early homo sapiens. To cite Australian Museum "Latest findings - including new fossils and improved DNA research and dating techniques - confirm the complexity of modern human (Homo sapiens) origins. Evidence still suggests that all modern humans are descended from an African population of Homo sapiens that spread out of Africa about 60,000 years ago but also shows that they interbred quite extensively with local archaic populations as they did so (Neanderthal and Denisovan genes are found in all living non-Africa populations) and these local populations contributed to our species’ success. So, while the general basis of the original Out of Africa model prevails, it requires extensive revision." Homo sapiens did come from Africa, we are homo sapiens. The new findings simply suggest we make new friends along the way.

If you think that 8000 years ago they are separate the way they are today you're missing a whole lot of history, the Chinese were the ones who moved to Japan and became Japanese yeah there were some Bush people there and they were pretty much exterminated a few may have been bred with but that ancient Oriental better than you mindset would have meant anyone fucking the Savages was ostracized. Hemudu and Lianzhu had nothing to do with Chinese people at all. They were built by the ancestors of the Austronesians and not Han Chinese.

Hemudu had nothing to do with Huaxia or Sinitic people, it was most likely built by the ancestors of Austronesians. Huaxia emerged in the Yellow River region amongst the millet cultivators.

It is hard to say. Chinese culture is surely heavily influenced by Liangzhu culture, like jade culture, but if the people are the same is not clear. They can be one of the tribes in the early China Age of Mythology(pre-Shang period).

Great video. As an American though I always wonder why the English have such a hard time speaking English. I dont know anything about regional dialects in the UK but wherever this guy is from, they do the same thing as our New Yorkers. Cant say an "R" unless it doesn't belong. The north side of Yangtze are the Chinese while the Southside are Yue. It was nomadic Chinese "slanted eyes" once they able to cross the river this is the downfall of Yue tribes.

unfortunately the illustrations are quite erratic and often misleading or confusing. It would also help if you learned to pronounce Chinese names, at least according to modern practice, preferably also reconstructed ancient enunciation. Alternatively you might consider showing the characters of the words that otherwise remain unintelligible. Moreover, your account of the transition to Xia is garbled, as Yao and Shun, the great predynastic model rulers featured very prominently and only in Confucian history, where importantly not part of any dynastic lineage and practiced strict meritocracy. Huang Di is certainly a legendary figure like Shen Nong and has no place in this process.

@array s of course, that's why we dont say this modern tomato breed , eg beef (ie kiwifruit) is the same as the old tomato, eg cherry (ie Chinese gooseberry). Kiwifruit is a subset of Chinese gooseberrys, all kiwi fruit are Chinese gooseberrys but not all Chinese gooseberrys are kiwifruit. It's pretty simple.

Right off the bat another misinformation about China. Anytime the narrator opens with “they independently” you know it’s going to full of fairytales that have been told over and over but simply isn’t true if you scratch below the surface. Let’s just start with, the Chinese were not the original inhabitants of most of China. So when he refers to “the Chinese” he could be talking about Iranians, Celtics or even Nordic looking people. I’d love to watch this, but it’s just going to make me angry when he refers to artifacts of the tocharians, Sogdians, Scythians, Saka, Wusun, Yuezhi, Xiongnu, and all decendents of indoEuropean etc as Chinese.

Why you acting like Tocharian remains are found all over China? These are mostly contained within Xinjiang especially the Taklamakan Desert, that is Central Asia brother not China proper.
