Obviously it was fucking hype seeing rebuild Ramiel go insane, but there’s something so off-putting to the original design. The chorus with a deadly octahedron almost makes you feel as if you just can’t comprehend it.
There's just something innately creepy about something you can't understand just doing it's own thing. The angels will bust through town, ruin shit in its path but it's nothing personal, then starts drilling...all day like nothing happened.
At least with most of the other angels we can biologically relate and identify with their human or at least animal like anatomy. But this is literally a double decker pyramid of death.
It's wild to realize that all of the angels were trying to accomplish the same exact thing, and it has *nothing* to do with humanity. Well... nothing directly to do with us anyway. Just out here fixing the cosmic coincidence that led to two spears of longinus being too close together and some hairless apes keep fucking up the whole program. I get the distinct impression that if the Angels were simply allowed to do the thing they wanted to do, they would obviously destroy NeoTokyo, but otherwise they'd just snag Adam's spear and gtfo. Humanity would be better off without that contamination anyway. Which makes the scary part for the average human the fact that other humans who think they are powerful have invited the wrath of eldritch horrors with their hubris and are letting the entire world be held hostage with the lie that these horrors wish to destroy us, when they really just want to save us... but the humans in charge are willing to sacrifice EVERYBODY for their pet project.
> Arrives > Almost kills Shinji > Penetrates Nerv's base > Makes humans use energy of all Japan > Refuses to elaborate any further > Dies Ultimate angel sigma grindset
I still like the way they handled Ramiels Death in the OG Series more. Instead of it "just" exploding into blood they needed multiple Weeks if not even months to get rid of a giant corpse in the middle of the city
NGE Ramiel: Kinda just slowly touches down to the ground after being shot Rebuild Ramiel: *_Turns into modern art while emitting screams of the damned_*
For full experience we need a video simulation of watching it slowly coming into view on the horizon and getting closer and closer untill it floats over the camera, choring that note *uninterrupted*
"Anno, I know we're running out of money but don't you think an octahedron will look kind of cheap to the fans?" "You don't know these degenerates like I do."
I'm rewatching NGE now. I'm shocked at how little screentime Ramiel gets. It also just does the ~auuuwuwuwuwuwuw~ thing once? Incredible how impactful it is
0:13 "Aye chief y'know how we haven't gotten to use this giant godly precision blast yet?" "Yeah, why?" "There's a cool looking building right here" "Prank em, Jon."
ramiel's so interesting and unique because it's simple. compare it to other angels who look all unique and complex, ramiel is literally a flying octahedron. it's just a sucker punch after seeing actual aliens who are either humanoid or monsters (or Leliel), the next enemy is this. no expression. it just comes to get to adam and reclaim the earth from lilin, and destroy everything in its way. it's so straightforward you don't even know if it's conscious or just acting by pure instinct, hell, you don't even know if THAT'S the angel and not a spaceship. you cannot read it's mind. everything in its way will be vaporized. and the screams, oh boy, in rebuild they took everything good about ramiel and increased it to 11. it's reflective. it shapeshifts. it bleeds. it screams. it can detach itself from its body and almost disappear, and then reappear again. almost as if it comes from a dimension our eyes can't see. ramiel is the most popular angel because it's unique, simple, and horrific.
I’ve always been interested in watching Evangelion, but after seeing Ramiel for the first time(I originally saw the Rebuild version), I have now bumped it up to a necessity. Ramiel is one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever seen, and I can only imagine there are worse after it.
@@jimijenkins2548 yeah, I watched the first 3 rebuilds within a few days of commenting, and shortly after decided to watch the original series + EOE before watching the final rebuild so I could finish off the franchise with the final entry. Imho, the Rebuild version of Ramiel was by a long shot the best angel, but as far as the horror factor goes… yeah, it definitely got worse😅.
The new design is sure EPIC, but the original one is still my favorite just because we can't comprehend it. At all. It is just two pyramids on top of each other. No "legs", no face. It looks more like an inanimate object, some kind of technology, and not an actual living being with goal and purpose. That creeps people out - and that is why it is the most popular and famous Angel
I remember seeing Ramiel for the first time blew my mind. The feeling it generated in me to see him as an impregnable flying fortress always comes back to me when I watch EVA again. The sight of him coming from beyond the sea and then presenting himself in all his splendor without knowing where he comes from or what he intends to do is pure cosmic horror!
They made the angel this form to save money on the budget yet it is one of the most memorable of them all. This is why the show was so great.. even in saving money they created something unique and fantastic
The Evangelion scaring me with this music and those different Angels. Ramiel is one of the scariest for me. It looks like unpregnable pyramid but... it's huge, it has voice and it can shoot incredibly powerfull. And this arrival to Tokyo-3...
you know, as fun as rebuild ramiel is to watch, i really like this version more. Angels are endlessly diverse (remember, there may be many more far off in the universe) but an extremely base life that need only a method of offense and a core/soul, and their earliest attacks are like them increasingly trying to defend that core by only using a little of their weirdness. it's only when israfel shows up after asuka they start becoming more abstract in their powers, and eventually they appear to reveal or maybe develop very human methods of communication and personalities since something something AT fields emotional barriers. it's a big deal if you're watching the series blind and their diversity and intelligence comes as a shock to you. so it would make sense ramiel just be a "big, weird looking alien with polygonal armor" on tv at the time.
Honestly making the design more intricate in the movie made this angel much less scary. Something about how indifferent it is as a random floating bipyramid that fucks up anything that gets near it with overwhelming firepower. As beautiful as the newer animation is, there's a certain terror to a lot of the original angels that's lost in the newer version
I just finished this series and this was probably my favorite part. As a casual Godzilla fan, I certainly enjoyed this 'kaiju approaching, everybody take shelter' theme far more than the complicated emotional and philosophical stuff that this show gets into later. It reminds me of the part in King of the Monsters when Rodan comes out of the volcano with the panicked music.
As someone who has never ed watched Evangelion, ramiel is just a bunch of geometrical shapes, that screams every time it breaks the laws of physics. And I think it's cool, actually
Imagine being a civilian in the NGE universe. You still gotta pay rent and spend 8 hours at work each day, but also, every once in a while, a gigantic alien diamond floats over the city and blows up several random office buildings. I wonder what it’s like to live every day with the knowledge that your final moments could very likely be spent writing up some quarterly earnings report.
Ramiel is probably my favorite angel because it isn’t a monstrous or divine like figure like most of the angels. Ramiel is more like a cold machine with only the soul objective of getting below the city to Adam and causing 3rd impact. The thing barely focuses on the Eva’s during the battle but only plays keep away with them.
Rebuild's extradimensional geometry thing is so iconic it's weirdly easy to forget it wasn't originally part of Ramiel's design. It just fit so brilliantly.
