In S12E16 of Wyrm Lyfe, You asked for Neoprene play surfaces and Hex shaped Hobby Vaults and we got 'em...mostly. 🪓 Find Us, Nerds: bit.ly/Wyrmwoo... #MGT #modulargametable #wyrmwoodgaming
Johann is the unknown employee without whom the entire company would fall apart but no one knows it. Every company has one. He's the Radar of Wyrmwood.
I'm pretty sure I'd like his type of job. I'm that person who will call and poke people to get something done. Like recently I've had to call walgreens, then fedex, then the company we were trying to return our product to to see what's going on. Long story short, fedex lost our return package and walgreens has them on camera taking it away. It was kind of a mess. But the company is sending us our product now after a police report and what not. I've got to inform them that Fedex won't let us file the claim and that they have to since it's their account, but if this was my job, I'd probably be okay with it. I like yelling at people to do better. xDD
My 2 cents, what I and other backers want is a REPLACMENT option to the felt. I have a MGT 1.0 table. The felt is very basic. It does it's job, the color looks good, but it's hard to pick cards up on it, the fibers will stick to some materials, dice sound loud rolling on it, and cards don't glide on it. We just want the material, not the print job. Please offer terrain neoprene as well, but not if it means giving up full, solid deep color, neoprene mats that replace the standard felt.
Exactly what I was going to say. I just like neoprene better than felt. I'd either want a flat color or a basic texture with a grid (like grass or stone with no obstacles), for when I don't want to draw or print a proper map. It would be a replacement for my dry erase grid I use now. Though now that I think of it, a custom-fit dry erase surface would also be worth considering.
I used a massive straight black neoprene mat on a normal table before I got my MGT. It is a far better surface to play games on than the felt for all the reasons you said. It was a sad downgrade I had to accept when I switched. Art is great but I was really hoping for a solid color neoprene replacement for the felt.
@@halgerson I thought they had custom-fit dry erase surfaces. Don't they have clear acrylic panels available? Also standard blank grid mats that wet-erase.
Flat colours are a must as well - some of us may want to move off felt because of the feel/ease of picking up stuff, rather than using artwork based neoprene. Also consider this as a replacement for felt, not just "sits on top". Heck, maybe flat colour with a WW logo?
I do not have a table, nor can I afford one, or physically get one if I could (being international and all), and its probably been suggested somewhere anyway, but I feel like putting a logo on one side of a solid colour mat is the way to go, then people get to choose solid colour, or solid colour with WW logo, and its 1 SKU option for WW to stock per colour
For neoprene vs felt. The neoprene gives easier, it's spongier, so it makes it easier to push in slightly to pick up cards/tokens/etc. I'd expect for most people who want a full size neoprene, it's not going to be taken out much, so art mats like you show feel like a bad match. Just flat color mats, that replace the felt are likely the big ask. For those who want art neoprene mats, the drop in would definitely work better, but I don't think that's going to be the typical use case.
@@Iceman_Gaming if you don't mind sharing, where are people ordering custom mats at these sizes from? I tried looking a few years back with limited success for a different gaming table.
I agree I'm awaiting my MGT 1 in Australia and would have hundred percent paid a premium to order a solid/textured neoprene colour may instead of felt if it was offered..
Most of the talk I've seen from people wanting neoprene was not about art or a grid, it was about the usability of the surface. Cards, Legos, puzzles, etc. all work better on a smoother surface like neoprene than they do on a fibrous surface like felt. There is a big split between wanting drop-in versus oversized replacement. So it sounds like you should really do both. For my use-case, I could probably live with it either way, but I would prefer to replace the felt. I also want solid colors with no grid.
I would also much prefer a full size neoprene felt replacement in solid colors over the proposed offerings here. Neoprene gives easier and dampens sounds much better than felt. While I could see some wanting custom terrain/art overlays, a solid full size felt replacement that works tucked in + under hobby vault would have much greater mass appeal and overall usability.
LOL - As a miniature wargamer for the past 40 years.... "You're too well socially adjusted to know about wargames" and "they use these nerdy rulers" -- I picked my "nerdy ruler" up at the dollar store. Both made me laugh.
Back when I played Mutant Chronicles War Zone I had my dollar store tape measure that I painted up with the Mishima logo on the side. When I switched over to 40K years later, no one knew what the M was for lol.
@@PeteQuad meh. It was mostly a joke (every good joke has a hint of truth), I still find it amusing. I don't buy their stuff and am just here for the entertainment.
Neoprene as a felt replacement is actually my preference. I don't wargame and I just prefer a neoprene surface to a felt surface for the games I play. Art mats just dropping in makes sense, but I think a flat color felt replacement is what I would be looking for.
Flat colors. Just give me your felt colors in neoprene and I'm happy, I don't want art or grids. And I would rather replace my felt for neoprene, so oversized.
Also, give us just a generic color neoprene with no grid and seeeexy big ass wyrmwood logo in the middle. That would be rad and really bundle the table together with the brand. I'd love that.
I’m looking to replace felt with neoprene. Would prefer flat colors. If you’re doing double sided maybe one side has a fancy WW logo and the other is empty? Neoprene for board gamers works better than felt because it’s smoother and has more give. Makes it easier to slide cards around and pick them up. Generally just a better experience. When I game on my current standard table I put a large neoprene mat down. Would love for that to be the surface of the vault
Seriously? Wyrmwood is missing the entire point of neoprene! The whole point is to replace the felt as it is a superior option for card game heavy users (you can slide cards across the surface like speed cloth). All you need to do is offer a solid color single sided neoprene option to replace the felt. You can still pursue the other options, but generally speaking if I want neoprene, it's either a solid color or for custom art. Also if you aren't having a card slot in the hobby vault, why not offer the old game deck design for those who want a card slot?
This guy gets it. We can get battle terrain double sided neoprene from amazon to roll out and play on when needed. What myself and other backers want is a neoprene replacement to the felt. Offer solid colors, and keep artwork to a minimum (maybe a wyrmwood logo watermark in the corner at most).
Solid colors can also offer a nice contrasting pop of color with the wood on the table. For instance a solid white neoprene mat with a WW logo in the center would really pop in a Black Walnut or Wenge table. That kind of thing can help promote the brand to other people at the table.
This guy has a good point for serious card players. I would play cards on the topper but that is just me. I just want a space so I can leave games in place for multi night playing. Mostly for monopoly but neoprene might be best for Uno
My biggest issue with the felt is how easy it is for puzzle pieces to catch. If you're selling it as a potential puzzle table, it needs to be a surface puzzle pieces can slide on (I have an MGT 1.0 with felt). its really hard to actually make a puzzle on it. I feel like neoprene would be easier? I'd have to try it out.
Completely agree. I got so frustrated working with it that I finally cut a piece of cloth to cover the felt when I want to use it for puzzles. Course that never sits right either but less frustrating. Shame because it works so well as a puzzle table because of the topper.
I just want dark flat colors (black/burgundy - that kind of thing) of neoprene, and I want it to replace the felt. I prefer the way dice roll on it, and picking cards and tokens up is real easy. Also, I think it's probably easier to clean. A WW logo in the middle (or a small one in a corner) would be cool, too.
I did a 2 sided (one side black, one side burgundy) neoprene mat when I build my gaming table for these exact reasons. Hopefully WW makes it an option.
I wouldn't mind a neoprene option to replace the felt. If I have to drop it in, I can just buy a neoprene mat elsewhere. There are places where I can get the mat with the image I want at the size I want. I don't have neoprene mats right now, but I have several cloth mats. They all have different patterns, water, generic grassland, town, and starscape. You could maybe get away with a pattern of a dungeon for roleplayers and fantasy miniature gamers, but I think it would be a bigger pain than you think. So, offer neoprene as a felt replacement and produce it in the same colors as the felt. You might want to put your logo on it...
Where is the neoprene that fits wargaming small table size because I’ve actually looked so many places and cannot seem to find a 40 inch x 49 inch neoprene.
The neoprene option absolutely needs to be a direct replacement for the felt and ideally solid color options. At this point I think I’m going to have to pass on the option if it is only sit on top. And it’s kind of sad since the felt is the only negative about the MGT table that constantly gets comments when people come over to play games.
Whoever the camera person is. I love them. The reaction yersterday to the chairs and todays reactions to the mats are giving Doug a little bit of a reality check. Don't stop sharing your opinions!
@@jazzeejax5816 alot of the negative reactions came before the the official video release today and Wednesday, when the video was announced to Kickstarter backers. So, you know.. Actual Wyrmwood customers.
I want a felt replacement, not a toss in that messes up Hobby Vaults. Firstly, I prefer the way dice roll on neoprene. But mostly, the felt you supply catches on cards, especially sleeved cards. Dealing cards on it is pretty terrible. Sliding virtually anything on it (gaming boards, tokens, cards, minis) tends to catch and grab. Picking up cards would also be easier on neoprene, as you can press down on one half of the card, and the spongy neoprene will squish, kicking up the other half of the card off the surface, making it easy to grab. I don't want battlemats, grids (you already sold me a gridded battle mat!), fancy artwork, WW logos, forests, dungeons, or any of that. I just want rich colored replacements for the felt cut perfectly to size to fit into the slot in the aprons just like the felt.
The biggest knock I have with the hex table is the individual outer legs. You get less real-estate, and they aren't as arm chair friendly. I think a central post would have been the way to go.
Dice roll nice on Neoprene, Cards are easier to pick up. It’s easier to wash/clean than felt. It’s really pretty simple. Especially cards. It being spongy let’s you push down so you can grab cards easily. Also felt is a pet hair magnate neoprene is not. People with a hobby vault will rarely replace hobby vault. Just take the simple path and let people get a neoprene that fits their table.
Looking at your competition might be helpful, both Rathskellers and BoardGameTables (Now AllPlay) make neoprene gamemats. I like solid color neoprene mats because A) not as busy like the crazy artwork ones and B) I like the feel and bounce of Neoprene better than felt, but I still like felt just not as much as Neoprene.
I'll echo everyone's consensus of a set of flat color neoprene options to replace the felt while also working with the Hobby Vaults. I also like the logo idea. If there's art options my vote goes to galaxy/stars/space/nebula vibes!
Ugh, there's too much to say. I'll list 1. Please don't design maps. Just give us generic colors with our without a grid, or a cool graphic (like stars) with no grid. That's it for neoprene. Let us design our own maps. 2. I want to replace my felt with neoprene. When i play card games with sleeves the corners catch on the felt. Neoprene is better for sleeved card games (Magic, pokemon etc). 3. Please let me TUCK my neoprene. I want to use my game deck all the time, and not have to take my neoprene in and out. 4. Put the card slot back into the game deck. When we were gaming with cards we'd put cards we all needed to see in the game deck slots and it was really cool. 5. I have pretty solid upper body strength and I'm the nerdiest nerd. 6. Hex game deck thing is bad in my opinion.
Edge stitching is a must. Like the idea of the mat going on top of the felt. Double sided sounds great. Most interested in solid colors, black or grey on one side, blue or green on the other
Having the neoprene sit on top of the felt would also occasionally make the hobby vault's "no-tip-bits" useless whenever the vault is moved on top of the neoprene. And also, hearing Johann talk about DHL I put myself in his shoes being like "oh, so because you guys can't make sure a delivery gets here within working hours, we have to come pick our stuff up?"
You need a plain field because people will put their own terrain on top to make it into something else. So you can effectively turn a generic grassy plain into a forest by adding your own tree models on top of it. Same for a plain stone texture. You'd add your own 3D walls to make dungeons or castles, etc. Plain is better for models. I'd do 1 mat that is a grassy plain on one side, all water (for sea battles) on the other side. Then do a mat that's plain stone on one side and a generic starry outerspace background. That will cover sci-fi games too. You'd cover a HUGE amount of encounters with just 2 mats.
I would definitely want cool art prints or solid colors for the neoprene to replace my felt as ones I would not be removing a lot. The battle mats and such are amazing and I want them too, but I’d likely take them out of the table, as they have specific versions, so those ones could be under sized.
For the neoprene mats, I'd go for drop-in, available to have square grids, hex grids, or no grid. Basic terrain types such as grasslands, desert, martian, moon, dungeon, industrial, etc.
Hey Joshua, what you should do is get rid of felt all together and just make everything neoprene give the basic solid colors that automatically goes with the tables. then set up how many terrains y’all think people would want and can choose from as extras, with storage containers in mine, if they want a lot of them. then you can always have specialty artist custom neoprenes
These are all additions to the base table -- I recommend giving dimensions for all additional items as "overlap" would cause issues in that respect. If you want to have a hobby vault as well as neoprene you can just additively put them together and make certain your table is long enough. The spongy nature and slightly higher thickness of the neoprene, replacing and adding and swapping can cause problems I feel in the long term because the stitching on the edges would wear through faster in all likelihood.
Kelli is spot on - offer per-terrain mats, make each double sided, one side w/ gridlines, the other without, and offer custom options for people who want fancy art. Edge seams are a MUST for long-term durability to avoid fraying at the edges. I would not mind some slight art variation in the terrains, but to Josh's point, it should not introduce any elements that suggest obstacles, changes in difficult terrain, etc. Some slight variation in appearance would be nice though for a little artistic touch - this may be tricky to balance though. I like the look of these samples though I agree rocks / trees imply a specific structure.
I propose a sandwich! Blank texture all over no grid. Some sort of clear plexiglass option green texture or no grid customers choice. Game night you put the mat down, you print out your terrain, plexiglass on top. Everybody gets what they want.
IMO: Offer solid colors of neoprene that replace the felt. Then, also offer undersized, lay-on-top battlemaps. I personally wouldn't get into the art print side of things unless you collaborate with some well-known artists; if people want that there are already custom neoprene printers out there that can support those requests.
One thing to note about the hobby vault inserts; the silicone ones won't be able to "slide" around so easily so fitting them in and messing around with them might be a bit more annoying because they'll grip to each other a little bit.
Coming from a longtime wargamer and tabletop roleplayer, neoprene mats are awesome for both hobbies, and are used in pretty much the same way. However, you have to keep in mind what their main purpose is: they act as a textured base that you can then place 3D terrain pieces on top of such as buildings, hills, trees, rivers, rocks, vehicles, scatter terrain pieces, and whatever else you have lying around. The mat is not the star of the show, it is meant to fade into the background, and as Josh mentioned, give "depth" to the overall look of the battlefield. Josh is also correct that specific details on the mat such as rocks and trees are generally bad, as they reduce the mat's versatility. As again, it's the background, not the star of the show. The whole point of having a collection of modular 3D terrain pieces is so you can set up the battlefield differently each time, if a mat has too much "baked in" detail, it fights against this core purpose. For designs, I'd definitely look at what the professional gaming mat companies are doing to get a sense of what people are buying, such as Deep-Cut Studio, Frontline Gaming, Tablewar, or PWork Wargames. Although as a general rule, offering a mat in each of the main themes used by both RPGs and wargames would be a great start: - Forest - Desert - Winter - Cyberpunk City - Medieval Town - Ruined City Offering options in all six of these core themes covers pretty much all bases you would need. 2-in-1 double-sided options are great, as are a double-sided grid vs non-grid. Both approaches have pros and cons. Broadly-speaking, RPGs prefer a grid, and wargames don't want a grid. And yes, these mats are generally switched out between games, but almost never at the table during a game, so having to remove the game deck to swap them out is not a big deal. Edge stitching is generally optional for big mats like this as their edges are tucked away - having it fit perfectly within the gaming well is more important. If edge stitching is included, it would be important to make sure those corners are sharp 90-degree angles and the stitching does not encroach significantly on the mat surface to give a nice, tight fit.
If the Neoprene is just cool art then make it a replacement for the felt its a statement that I want on my table all the time. If it's just battle maps then make it just lay on top. A lot of war gamers already have a library of mats they are going to be laying in. A lot of people have sensory issues with felt at well so just offering solid colours with or without a gird would be a good option for a lot of people as well.
Flat color neoprene, that can be set into the vault instead of the felt! This would also be a good bit closer to the system you use in the prophecy! Although, the thing I'd really love is to get the same material as the prophecy for the MGT fault!
I say full size neoprene as a replacement for felt, and either solid color or simple terrain. People who want art very well might not want the limited options you provide or might want something specific. In either case I say save your selves the head ache of keeping multiple art print neoprenes in stock and at most just recommend them to someone who can print it for them.
I feel like a plain ass beige mat with grid lines one side and hex lines on the other would be the most popular. Have it be wet or dry erase. It doesn't need textures or pictures on it. Just a way to draw our maps.
Honestly a mat I would buy would be a nice blue, red or gray solid colour with the Wyrmwood logo dead smack in the centre. The Wyrmwood logo is very Bice and would be a good display in a games room. The other thing that would be cool would be the Wyrmwood Corrupted logo in the centre of the play mat.
Constructive Criticism: With a week left in the Kickstarter, show the table, not the people. I’m specifically talking about the Hex table portion. I was just begging for the camera person to point the camera down. I know what Doug and Ed look like.
Playmats have a manufacturability issue of always have a variability of about 5-10mm. So you should oversize and replace felt. Also the may you tested was so small - the larger mats shrink more widthwise. So if you're using it on the Wide table you'll need to order a size like 1cm wider than you think youd need.
So, thoughts. I actually really like the flipmaps mostly as is. The double sided is awesome and if only one side is doable, it should be the dungeon floor texture. While everything Josh said about playing is correct (terrain, cover, etc) I'll adjust that as I need it for the current encounter with props or markings. Something like the edge of the dungeon side going to dirt does not matter and is fine to be present. I definitely don't want artwork, that would be distracting and likely need to be covered up and I definitely do want grid marks. Originally I felt laying the map on top of the felt would be my preferred option, but when Doug mentioned the concern of the vault not laying flush, I immediately switched to preferring to have it replace the felt. I'm the forever GM for my Pathfinder group, so that is were these thoughts are coming from and I'm excited for my table, but that being said, the CEO of Wyrmwood consistently mocking "dnd nerds" is starting to put an ugly taste in my mouth. . .
Honestly a black mat with a big Wyrmwood logo would be dope. Also, being a gamer, I probably wouldn't buy any map mats specific to this table, there's already plenty of good options out there for 3x3 or 6x4 mats.
As a wargamer, Neoprene has basically become the 'standard' everyone plays on nowadays, you get it precut to the battlefield size (Depends on your specific wargame) , you get artwork that matches the terrain you have built (or at least fits nice). Nicer ones even have battlefield layouts premeasured. I dunno if having your own is needed, but making sure the 'big names' fit in the table is big (thinking FLG 44X60 Mats for Warhammer 40k since that's the biggest wargame around by far)
i just want a solid color neoprene mat to replace the terrible felt. stitched edge double sided would be amazing. i also prefer the really thin playmat thickness, not the super thick mats that some people use. it makes it WAY easier to deal with AND wouldnt cause issues with the hobby vault, plus might even be a few pennies cheaper
The table I built for myself I have inserts for my play area. It's reminiscent of what geeknson does with their table. It's a 1/4" plywood with 1/8" foam glued to it. Then I have microfiber suede wrapped around and stapled to it. It looks and feels awesome! Cards glide and are easy to pick up. I think the trick was the foam underneath as the fabric is really thin.
The main reason I'd advocate for the neoprene mats is the ability to wash them. You don't do it often, but being able to machine wash the mats goes a long way for longevity. I'm speaking as a miniatures & a card gamer. (X-Wing, MTG, etc.)
Sounds like the ideal solution would be solid-color neoprene mats intended to completely replace the felt for people that want that spongier, smoother feel. In addition, develop art/terrain covers that would slip in on top of that, in a thinner material (use that nicely printable fabric that covers neoprene on a mouse pad, for example). That way, the art is easily interchangeable (where the base material of the vault doesn't need to be), and the thickness won't throw off hobby vault/toppers.
Art neoprene would be a great felt replacement (like the art on the Wyrmwood playmates, or the large hex trays). Anything battle may style would be better to drop in and remove vs resetting the table each time you want to change terrain. Neoprene is much easier to pick things up off of (cards/tokens) because of the extra squish. Excited for the options to replace the existing felt.
One issue on neoprene is that it unrolls flat. I’ve seen neoprene mats that keep a curl - when stored they are in a tube or roll or similarly stored - and unrolling doesn’t make them flat. So having Neoprene that is thin enough and edge finishes to ensure it will unroll and lay flat is critical.
Losing the card slot on the hobby vault is a negative in my opinion. At my table, the GM uses the game deck for their stuff, and we've found the card slots to be very handy for displaying initiative cards, character portraits, etc.
My thought on Felt v Neoprene- I would like to use a machine-washable neoprene surface to preserve the felt. I'd also prefer gridlines to be an option on the Acrylic Overlays and leave the art to be more abstract.
i will say most wargamers will just ignore the little design elements on those mats, and just use it as a nice scenery for their custom printed or hand made terrain. (some people don't even put a lot of effort in to them and just grab some random boxes or remotes to use) It just makes it easier to tell what is cover or obsticals.
I agree with everyone else, this needs to be a replacement for felt. I prefer to use neoprene for card and board games and also am a wargamer. You could easily sell a simple design (say solid color with a subtle wyrmwood shield) on one side and a wargaming landscape for the other.
Give us choice with the over or under. Myself I want to be able to remove the felt and replace with neoprene. A basic neoprene with WW stylish logo. Neoprene for games, directly on the table (cards etc) Felt for games that have player boards or mats already. Choice!
Regarding the mats, simple environment maps with no grids are great (cobblestone, desert, snow, grass, etc…), leave put Terrain features like rocks, trees, etc… I prefer single sided with grip on the back to avoid sliding. Black stitching looks great… for art maps, I’d like a classy mat like a wormwood, wormlife, and/or corrupted logo… other nice “background” art maps are nice too. Mats just let you quickly swap the look on the fly, and is really fun for players too.. lastly, I prefer a quick roll out, don’t tuck the mat, it will sit on top of the felt . Thanks for asking for out input !
A full size neoprene felt replacement in solid colours and featureless textures is a good option. Wargammers will usually have big terrain pieces to use as obstacles so features would not be necessary.
Hex table won't sell super well, because it doesn't work in most people's houses. However, for people who want one, they'll LOVE it. If I had a good place for it in my house I'd be 1000% getting a hexy table and like it even more than my current MGT. It's just that it doesn't work for me right now. I hope even if isn't a top seller you'll continue it because it's an incredible option to have.
As a tabletop gamer, yes. Generic mats are excellent. For star wars armada, I use a 6x3 starfield mat all the time. For legion, some generic sand or snow backgrounds are nice to place terrain on
Make flat color neoprene that replace the felt. Make the graphic terrain neoprene (that people will change more) as mats that can easily go on top of the felt.
Game Deck 1.0 user. The card slot holds a cardstock DM screen (such as the one included with the 5e Starter Kit), thus taking up the absolute minimum amount of space of any screen. It's why I have no use for a WW GM screen. You've already made a superior product. Sure, anyone could add a card slot with a table saw after purchase, but I'm betting they don't want to put a $500 piece of wood on the saw themselves. Alternatively, you could have a cardstock screen holder that clipped into the rail. Or, if you want to mix your product lines, a magnetic "post" that clips into the rail and then the GM screen panels grab onto the posts. Game Deck or Hobby Vault - you WILL need it to slide to clear the feet on the end toppers. So the new anti-tilt blocks are a big improvement over the old style. Neoprene: Custom-printed neoprene is nice, but custom mousepad manufacturers already make that product for pretty cheap. It's easier to pick thin objects (coins, cards) off the neoprene than the felt. Card players will want "speed cloth" anyhow, and you're not really talking about that. The (unofficial) Discord has identified some casino speed cloth mats that fit the Medium for $35 and I doubt you can beat that price. For my MGT 1.0 purchase, I got 3 different colors of felts, the wet erase battlemat, and the acrylic overlays. Two of the felts are still unopened, and the acrylic still has the blue contact paper on it. And I'm gaming 3x a week or more. Because of the need to take everything out of the table, you will probably never replace the felt, and it's very durable anyhow. If it gets crumbs/dust, you just vacuum it and it's 100%. The acrylic overlay is nice, but who has a large format printer that they're using custom maps? Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't put it past someone, but I don't do stuff like that. And if you're using paper maps, they're probably single use and you're just drawing on them and you don't really care to protect them. The acrylic overlay sorta does the same thing as a neoprene mat, but the neoprene gives you a much better play surface. And you can buy it cheaper, and custom. I DO use the battlemat, and the wet erase markers and Magic Juice are pretty good - but that sort of product isn't unique to WW either. Overall, I'd be most likely to buy a neoprene insert (not felt replacement) that installs easily and just has a generic pattern and full 1" grid. Double sided with one "overworld" and one "dungeon" would be neat, and we could just use some random objects to define the obstacles.
HI JOSH!!! nothing against you, but can we all agree that Josh Watson is amazing? you nerdy Josh are quite alright, but we've only just really met. i'm sure if you're on Wyrm Lyfe more, we'd grow to love you just as much.
Coming from the perspective of a miniatures gamer, my opinion on neoprene mats is to have them with basic battlefield themes. Grasslands, ash wastes, rocky fields, ocean, space starfields, iced earth, volcanic rock, and without the grid. As a gamer who appreciates variety in his hobbying, I would prefer they sit on top of the felt, as it would be easier to swap them out from one game to another, but in terms of an overall table upgrade, a plain colored neoprene mat to replace the felt could be good also. There are companies that make wargaming battle mats in the common sizes for GW games (44"x60" for a standard 2000 pt game). Focusing on the plain colors for the table but offering a partnership with a domestic supplier of wargaming mats with a discount code or something could be solution worth exploring.
About the neoprene mats. I'd say offer replacements for the felt that slides in, solid colors. Then if you can, same but with some cool art (not terrain, but like the wyrmwood logo or a big version of the maps and monsters hexy tray backgrounds, etc) And then offer neoprene terrain maps with grid that aren't full size (bland simple backgrounds, no terrain features included), so drop in with enough space left for a hobby vault. No hobby vault, slide it to the middle (d&d and the like rarely need that large of a battlefield anyway, full-size 40k does but those ppl buy the wargaming table anyway and none of this fits anyway right?). To me, the terrain neoprene mats aren't replacements for the felt, so those should be drop-in as they will get swapped out a lot. Honestly not sure you even need to offer it yourselves, people can buy neoprene terrain wherever and it should fit inside fine. Maybe just set up a partnership with an existing brand, and include a coupon code if you bought an MGT or something I dunno. The felt replacement neoprene I'd also offer for Hexy tables, if possible.
Mats with art and mats with flat terrain, both sold in 2 lengths, 1 which is sized to be placed in the table without the hobby vault without tucking and 1 which is sized to be place in the table with the vault all the way on the end of the table without tucking in, also have clear acrylic sheets with grid or hex printed on them to place on top of the mats to add a combat grid
Very disappointing update re neoprene mats. Current MGT owner, and would like a more versatile gaming surface to replace the felt. Neoprene is better for card games (cards catch on the felt), puzzles, and Lego. Solid colors, one-sided, and they tuck in? I'd buy 3. Mats with graphics and they just lay on top of the felt? I'll buy 0. Also, was hoping for a hex table neoprene mat.
I feel like if you're shelling out this much for a table, you're probably into RPG terrain or at least have the means to get into it. A white neoprene might be kind of cool for a projector setup, though.
