Nepal's Maternal Mortality Crisis | 101 East Documentary

In the remote mountains of Nepal, a shortage of healthcare means childbirth can be particularly fraught.
For some women who experience complications, an emergency helicopter service is their only hope.
The rugged terrain makes it a dangerous mission for all those involved, but it can be crucial in saving the lives of mothers and their newborns.
101 East meets the women risking their lives to become mothers and those trying to save them.

5th child by 25 and Gauriya’s husband seems like he is in his mid 50s . Walking 4 hours while 9 months pregnant ! I feel so bad for her. She looks like she has aged due to the stress. She looks like 35

I just said the same thing. That man looks every bit of 55. Im scared to know how old her first child is. The way he was giving orders; no compassion, no nothing. Then he was sitting there smoking his pipe while she was climbing a tree! You're right, all the demanding physical labor, and birth after birth has aged her so much; he needs to stay off her. I'm ranting, but her story makes sad, but also angry.

This is utterly heartbreaking. I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant and walking short distances even though I'm in very good maternal health leaves me winded, my hips ache and my pelvis feels like it's about to give way. I can't imagine an 8hr walk. Given the kind of person I am, faced with this sort of hardship to just have babies, I would stop at 1 or none. My first pregnancy was hard and it took 10 yrs for me to build up courage to do it again(current pregnancy) and this will be my last. I hope their gov gives out birth control information and resources too. You can't let women just suffer and die like this. They barely have food to eat, how are they feeding several mouths?
@janesmith9024
@janesmith9024 Год назад
Good luck with your baby. 8 hour walking on the video was a long way at such a late stage. I did cycle at 40 weeks pregnant in labour in London on my way back from work by the way. Exercise isn't always bad for you in pregnancy for those who are fit. Not everyone is the same of course.

It's beyond tragical to watch this and see these poor women suffer sooo badly. Working, carrying children, basically taking care of the entire household while 9 months pregnant. Horrific😱. A huge eye opener to how different our lives are😢.

Single-Dad is trying so hard! His scenes with his baby where he's oiling them to keep their skin healthy, are so beautiful. Goria is badass, climbing trees while heavily pregnant and making multi hour hikes in the mountains. We underestimate how much basic modern conveniences helps us, even just to avoid these situations altogether. A blood transfusion could have saved Jaula, and birth control could have helped Goria and her husband, who already have four children and who knew ahead of time that her last pregnancy was dangerous. Kudos to Nepal for at least building health centers.

Many women die in need of treatment and maternity care in Nepal. I read a heart wrenching story of many women in rural areas of Nepal where women are forced to give birth in animal shed and forest. Due to lack of nutritious food and maternity care many struggle for their survival.They are driven away from human settlements as people consider childbearing "impure". How can a taboo that considers childbearing "impure" still exist in todays world? High time to put an end to this taboo!

There should be a program to house pregnant women, where they could go before giving birth. A support person could come with her, returning home only after mother and baby are stabilized. They could also have medical personnel who live in villages on hand. That way, the helicopter could be reserved for unforeseen emergencies. Even if you live in a remote area, there’s really no reason for so many women and babies to die in childbirth. The world has the technology and know-how to significantly improve this situation.

Are contraceptives an option and available 😢? Childbirth in such rural area with so less really is worrying. Strong women in deed.

This is so hard to watch. Education is key - they need to be taught about the importance of contraception and reduce the amount of children these very young women are having. These female babies are guaranteed to repeat the cycle if they aren’t educated.
