I feel that people in general forget that animals dont think like humans. NERD has been an inspiration on how to observe and connect with and animals body language. If you pay attention, one can really learn alot. Learning from our animals is what makes our journey amazing.

they look so sweet! A kid I knew had a monitor in the early 90s and man, that thing, you couldn't even get near it's enclosure w/o it hissing and spazing out. It was just a big, plastic bin. Its nice to see how tame and sweet they can be when properly worked with and socialized.

Your baby croc monitors are gorgeous with their bright colouring were so cute climbing all over you. There were so lively, too. Perky little guys. "I'm not a threat, to them I'm a TREE..." LOL Watching the wee black one with his mouse was hilarious, him just wandering around, carrying it like a little trophy, "All mine! Lookee what I got!" Adorable. Your other guys nomming down on the crickets... The poor golden fellow who kept missing his noms, "First day with the new mouth..." *snort* Just came from watching Kenan's unboxing of his new Crocodile monitor Lagitha (sp?)--FEISTY gal! I don't know if she was wild caught, or not, but she was definitely not tame. Very hissy and pissed off when she arrived! Kenan built a boss enclosure for her, though, nice, big place with a cool hide-box on a raised platform, insulated with a shade canopy, heating mat inside, plants that'll grow to give her a nice jungle to climb around in (lots of creatively placed branches for the vines and whatnot to grow over). It's going to look awesome in a few months. I'm not sure how large crocodile monitors get--she's about five or six feet long, apparently, probably not quite adult?--so she should have lots of room to grow, but Kenan will build her a larger space when she needs it. That TAIL! She was really muscular, too. Handsome animal. I don't know if I will ever have a beautiful lizard like a tegu, or monitor one day, but I'd like to. I've met a few who were quite friendly and inquisitive, even with strangers. Bearded dragons are sweeties, too. :-)

This video made me happy cry. Before watching Kevin this never really would happen to me. I can not even begin to express how wonderful it is to see another human that can read animals, respects them and values selective temperament breedings and socialisation in reptiles. If I am ever in a situation where I can support a water monitor, I will definitely get a black dragon from Kevin, but for now I am starting small, with a project to selectively breed hognose snakes, for temperment. Sure they are easy to tame compared to monitors, but an animal that is more comfortable in a captive environment where it is handled all the time is going to make a much better pet regardless.

If your experienced with wild animals you can read them. But my exprirance never hand feed them cause they acociate hand with food.i prefer bowls..hatchlings always put big pan of water n they naturally start using water pan to poop in..ones that are ranch raised are more wild n arnt pan trained.that makes alota more work for you.thir poop smells bad n if it's big your cleaning poo up twice a day..n it's a lot work. Thir the most awsume pet I recommend Asian water monitors. Black throats seem easier to.

I was into reptiles some 30 or so years ago, had a Chilean Dwarf Tegu, got it from a shop on Newbury St. in Boston. Loved it, it was like having a little dragon as a pet. I love the look of these baby water monitors, they seem super cool. I think however they would get way to big for me. I just fell back into this rabbit hole after coming across one of Clint's videos. I love what Kevin is doing here, so yes as a new audience member, I'd love more. I'd also like to know more about the breeding and what some of the terms used mean and maybe some of the secondary goals of the different subtypes.

I love Black Throats. They're the large monitor that I am trying to work up towards. I've not gotten my Ackie to learn monitor behavior yet, but I feel as if when I am able to afford your monitors, I will be ready for my first large monitor. I'm married and have kids, so that will be several years, but I refuse to get an animal until all its needs already are met. N.E.R.D. and Kevin are amazing. I purchased a Spider Ball as the first snake to introduce the family. While I grew up in South Georgia Herping my entire childhood on our wetland property, I was in the Navy for a number of years and never wanted to purchase a reptile until I was going to be out and settled. We love Clint's Reptiles as well, and cannot wait until they visit... Maybe ya'll can do a caiman video because that is also on my list as a reasonable Crocodilian.

I live in NY where water monitors are banned. I do have a Savannah monitor that I've had for almost 2 years. He was a tiny when we first brought him home. We started with the no grab thing and it worked. Just go in, do maintenance, talk to him, tong feeding. Once he started crawling on to us, he would catch rides, watch TV and just hang out with the family. Now he's big and thinks he's one of us. Totally cool with people. You can hand feed him. If you raise them with respect, they turn out pretty tame. Never force handle! Make every interaction a positive experience for the monitor! Kevin's monitors all think he's their dad! That is how every monitor should think of their humans.

I've seen other videos of people getting these new baby monitors and there's a HUGE difference when they're not getting them from you guys. Amazing work, Kevin is so knowledgable the proof is in the way every single animal has 0 fear of him. I've had a lot of experience with these monitors are trust me they aren't just born like this, this behavior is only attained with knowledge and constant work. Very impressive. I wish Croc monitor bites weren't so bad, I would love to have one but in my opinion only people like Kevin should have them, they are potentially deadly when full grown and that's not an over statement, they have literal razor daggers for teeth and are extremely fast and powerful. Water monitors make amazing pets though, I had a really big one for years and she was puppy dog tame. I miss her a lot.

Yes to more monitor and socialization videos. It takes a special man to continue lecturing with serenity while dead mice are smeared around the back of his neck. Question: What's the NERD opinion on the impact of multiple generations of captive breeding on temperament? It doesn't seem to have the same effect on every species. When do you start to notice any differences, and are there other factors that influence this?

I am immensely impressed with what you do with your water monitors I just got my first monitor which is a juvenile Nile " which I know Niles have a bad rep for being bad starter monitors" but I saw him at the pet shop while taking my little bro to get stuff for his fish tank I just absolutely fell in love with his defiant deminor " because I think that defiance in an animal is a sign of intelligence because I mean what would we do right?... " I named him Loki because he is mischievousness but this is my first monitor I have most experience with dogs mainly pitbulls which this seems like the pitbull of lizards in a way but as you know each animal has its own personality just like us ppl they just don't speak our language so most of us misconstrue that as lack of intelligence but we don't speak their language either or even come close so vise versa or whatever, but since I got him I've been researching everything I can on Niles because I just caught the fever and am completely fascinated ( I have a 3 yr old son who loves dinos and (besides birds which I dislike)... Sorry but I do have my reasons lol. this is the closest to a dino that I can get, But when I do something I like to try to fully immerse myself into to try to do it right especially if it's for my boy. And I just gotta say out of all the videos I've been watching yours have been THE MOST inquisitive in helping me learn what I need to to help me captivate and earn the trust of this very fascinating and intriguing animal. I've made mistakes (which I'm working on) like I got a top opening tank instead of a front opening tank ( because the guy at the pet store said that that's what I needed... Just so he could make a sale I'm sure) but like I said, I am now immersed and very interested and captivated by these animals ( but still gonna just stick with the one for now... 👍) And your videos helped me learn a lot about my Nile and what I should do. I started by giving him the biggest tank they had ( 40 gal. ) But top opening, which is more of a struggle than anything else in gaining Loki's trust in me so far he does have his own room off of my attic room for his future diy enclosure though he is just still too small a couple months old tops maybe a little more, Ive had him about a month and a half now from the local pet store which sold him for about 60$ and then I spent about close to 400$ on his tank and starter enclosure just from what the guys at the pet shop was telling me I needed that day ( mind you I am just a simple chef at a restaurant making only 14 an hr) but I love my son and seeing him happy and I LOVE ANIMALS especially challenging ones of this caliber but I think the rewards of doing it right and making Loki happy will be worth it for me and my boy in the future when we are handling or showing ppl this modern day dinosaur that is now part of our family to other ppl. I do live in central Ohio so ambient temperature is a little bit tricky to keep up with which is most of my worry but just to be sure I got the heat pad which covers only a little bit less than half the tank he's in at the moment and I got a heat lamp which I usually just turn on during feeding ideally to help him bask in and help him digest the large crickets ( I give him 10 large crickets at least every other day which I read that juveniles should be fed daily but I also do have a hectic work schedule so I'm being honest when I say it is not daily 😞 smh but sometimes he eats all 10 at once and sometimes there will be one or two crickets left in overnight until he eventually eats them or I take them out. One question I've been trying to figure out is when should I introduce him to small pinky or fuzzy mice???... I know the rule of thumb is to keep the food diameter slightly less than the width of their head but I would also like to maintain the live feeding aspect for him like nature intended, instead of dethawing frozen already dead mice for him to eat ( I'm worried he won't take to it) because the crickets I've been feeding him since I got him have been live and he's had to chase them down in his tank like he would in the wild and that is important for carnivorous animals of all kinds I believe. Also he has never bit but does like to tail whip alot which from what I've researched is I guess normal for juvenile monitors ( especially the Nile from what I've gathered) I put my used work sick in his tank a while back for him to get familiar with my scent which I'm trying to ween him of presently because it has become his favorite hiding/ sleeping spot which is one of those mistakes I'm now learning because when feeding him or just wanting to handle him I've had to try to carefully dump him out of said sock which is where he is about 80% of the time now and after doing so much research have started to find that coaxing him out of that sock for feeding or socializing like I've stupidly done has probably been a major part of the obstacle in earning Loki's trust and companionship which I so badly want because I've just fallen in love with these monitors lizards and have gained a lot of respect for them from what I've recently learned about them. And again I know that Niles are not for beginners which I did not know until after I bought the beautiful captivating little dino dude from the little local pet store near me, but he is now my responsibility and I want to do it right by him because sadly it wasn't the little guys choice that he got stuck with me and I'm now committed soooo.... here we are lol, so sorry about all the details and questions but I've googled and looked up all I could about the Nile monitors specifically since I realized what I've gotten into and as you know not much info is actually out there as apposed to domesticing tips for them only that it is difficult for most which doesn't deter me I'm actually quite intrigued by the bit of spunk that the Niles seem to generally have so any tips or info would be greatly appreciated. you seem like most intuitive person so far in this type of animal companionship so thank you for the videos and knowledge so far they have been more helpful than most and keep up the great work you are doing for these intelligent creatures

I'm going to be getting a Timor monitor soon, and plan on using the NERD socialization methods with it. I'm excited to see how it goes. Wish me luck!
