I was very concerned when I recently changed gyms. But everyone's been super friendly and now I'm glad I trained at 2 different gyms because it gives me a broader perspective on bjj. I've found a new home.

Just to add to what he said. Think about enjoying the present with its changes, because eventually, they could also become “the good old days” of your future.

Just went through this recently. It has been hard due to how amazing my previous coach and other people I trained with were, but the gym I ended up going to has been very welcoming and quick to help me out.

DEALING WITH THIS NOW BECAUSE OF A BREAKUP!!! Everytime I am going through a mental battle of some sort with BJJ, you always come through with a video relating to it! Thank you so much Chewy for always reading my mind!

I tell people this often. If you are dating someone before he or she trains, introduce them to a gym that isnt yours and visit her/him there. Avoid dating in the gym, unless your 100% sure that youll get married, once you inevitably break up the your situation will be more stressful than you can ever imagine. Plenty of fish in the sea. No sense crossing wires.

I changed gyms because of a toxic environment. Best decision I've made for my development. Now I'm training at Garry Tonon's gym, which is a plus cause he's awesome, but it's an awesome environment as well. The environment will generally be a reflection of the coach/owner. But if you're in a toxic gym and that's the only thing you've ever known, it's hard to understand that there are better options out there
@kmccart2
@kmccart2 6 лет назад
Was it Garry's old gym?
@gabetorresx
@gabetorresx 6 лет назад
@@kmccart2 No, the gym he owns/teaches at, not Renzo's. Brunswick BJJ in NJ. That's also Gordon Ryan's original gym (though he doesn't teach there anymore). Nicki Ryan still trains there, as well
@MrJJA714
@MrJJA714 6 лет назад
Can you please elaborate what your definition of a "toxic gym" is?
@gabetorresx
@gabetorresx 6 лет назад
@@MrJJA714 In my particular case, my original was gym full of people that had chips on their shoulders and that aggressive behavior was encouraged. Also, the owner very clearly favored some students over others, giving attention and support to only certain students. It was often a hostile learning environment. I'm sure there are plenty of other things that can make a gym environment bad, but you got to figure it out for yourself. And a gym doesn't necessarily have to be bad to not be a good fit for you, but that takes some self-awareness to figure out the kind of environment that you'll do best (and feel most comfortable) in

I agree with everything he said ! I first started training in hawaii and then when I came back I felt like I couldn't find another place to train but the main thing for me was the vibe of the gym and how they welcomed people and I have found one now and couldn't be happier ! Niagara BJJ

Been there done that. I have changed gyms/schools two times and I am about to change now for the third time. I newer loose the nostalgia about any of those places but I have to move on. None of those gyms I switched closed at that time I left becouse I became the best participant there. It happened not becouze I'm f*cking amaizing or something it happened becouze a lot of people are quiting, new come in but majority quit in year or two so it's hard to get good training partners that can teach me something. So far I noticed that the need for a shitch comes around the seventh year in that place/gym for me.

I feel similar, in a way, just getting started with BJJ in general. I’ll try to apply this to my “new” gym

My gym keeps recycling coaches every few months and I am going crazy there. The new coach is World FAmous but cannot teach a lick. The entire class is 45 min of rolling and its too much for my age. I am going to change to a new gym in January and right now I feel like I have to FORCE myself to go twice a week and that is a bad feeling

So the only thing my coach has taught me in the last 5 months ( I am not joking at all) is one guard stand up escape, one side mount escape and Tons and TONS of heel hooks like you cannot imagine. We have not even done guard at all lol I am moving on to a new gym in Jan/FEB..

I started bjj 7 years ago and i feel that it doesnt matter if i become friends with the gym members because they all quit at some point anyway or i change gyms. I always feel that the only thing that will always be there is bjj.

I had to move away from my gym and I have yet to find one that comes close to replacing the original it’s kind of like having a stepparent that you kind a like but don’t really like but you have to except them because that’s all you got

Man I’m currently going through a similar situation. Moved to another town for work and haven’t been able to train for past 6 months or so. Now I have the same reservations I did when I first started my BJJ journey. On top of that, I’m currently a purple belt, and I feel my skills have been blunted down and not sure if the new school will doubt my rank or call BS. Anyone deal with this? Advice? On a side note, I’m excited to start training just have all these doubts in my mind.

I am a white level guy and my old coaches had mostly white to blue level guys that were nice. The NEW coach has brought in many purple to brown belt that are not nice and super big and just cream me. So I wont be a punching bag .. and I just leave after the technique part. Any advise

Hey Chewie, can you help me out? I have a BJJ tournament coming up but I'm really nervous about it since I got injured in my last tournament. I won the silver but I'm irrationally worried I'll get injured again even though I healed up completely. That said, it's been affecting my training and prep for the match. Any advice?

Seems most injuries happen during tourneys or open mat in class.

I am quitting my BJJ gym and looking for a new one. The Coach is very lazy and spends all of class having us rolling and my body cannot handle it anymore. I will still keep doing the MMA Wrestling class which is a different instructor. Now I have to pay for 2 gyms lol

Hey Chewie ! I wanted to ask a question because I’m in predicament right now , I’m a 5’11 227 lb 15 year old 10th Planet practitioner & I’ve been training for about a year now and I love it but I asked my team if I should wrestle at my high school because of the amazing benefits it has & they all suggest that I do but, thing is I don’t know anything about wrestling and the thought of losing what I’ve learned in this one amazing year of training bjj is horrible......What can you suggest for me ? Thank you
@johnnyc0811

Johnny Chanda Thank you brotha , another thing that I don’t like is that I’m leaving my bjj family to go wrestle I’m devastated
@fusion772
@fusion772 6 лет назад
you could still talk to those people even if you are busy wrestling and if you can manage juggling both things in your spare time then you can get the best of both worlds to some extent. I don't know that much about grappling arts but I think there is some cross-over between wrestling and jj therefore you probably won't even forget all that much of what you learned because some of it would transfer over to wrestling anyhow

The gym I go to is a great gym, but because of my work schedule I can only catch one of the assistant coaches classes. The assistant coach is a really well trained black belt, but hes a total dick. 22 years old and does not know how to treat people. On the other hand, the head coach us a 4th degree black belt under rigan machado. I dont want to leave this gym, but I feel generally uncomfortable there because of the coach I have access to. Should I leave and find another gym? There arent many other gyms around me of the same quality

What would you do if you were in a relationship that you dreaded coming home to that person everyday? As much as it would suck initially you would break up with that person. Toxic is never healthy. As much as you may not want to bc of how much you like the head coach you may want to look into other schools. There is no point in staying with one that you dread going too you will either just end up hating it and quitting or possibly getting injured bc you wont be "there" when youre there. Sorry to hear about the coach being a p.o.s. brother it definitely makes it a shitty situation
