Have you ever experienced a big change in your BJJ game that was kind of painful?
This is the situation that is happening for our friend who sent in a question regarding the change of his Brazilian Jiujitsu gym.
He changed gyms and he's finding that his old BJJ Identity of being tough is getting him into trouble.
Have you ever had to change BJJ gyms? If so, at the new gym, was it the same as the old gym?
Oftentimes new gyms can create new experiences for the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner.
The change that you experience in your game, it can be very difficult to deal with.
Our ego is a conglomeration of stories we tell ourselves and then when something happens to change that story. Our ego feels threatened.
In the video I share my experiences from my own growth as a Purple Belt.
I also share how as I initially got better in BJJ my game actually got worse because I became too possessive of what was working for me.
As I had things begin to work I didn't want to do much else.
Because of this my game got worse. And in the video I share how I got over it.
I hope the video helps!

I’ve been thinking about joining a local gym but I’ve been really hesitant because I’ve never had any martial art training before and I’m a women and I was just scared to walk into a gym. So I thought I’d do as much research as possible before going and honestly your videos have helped more than any other material I’ve watched/read. So thank you man for helping me gain the confidence to finally walk into my local gym!

Remember, everyone in there, even the amazingly skilled people have been where you are. We all started as total beginners and people remember where they used to be.

I've been doing BJJ on and off for the last 8 months. (Trying to make it regular now.) At this point, those skilled people at some point in time seems unfathomable - yet it make sense.

Just do it! I've done Muay Thai for a couple of years, and quit it a while back, transferred over to MMA and BJJ. OH MY GOD. The difference is huge. The people in my BJJ class are some of the greatest people I've ever met, and it seems to be the same with every BJJ academy I've ever heard about. Even in my first competition I've met so many great people, even though the environment is so competitive... Really, just do it! You'll soon find that being scared was completely pointless and meet some of the greatest people in your life, I'm sure of it! That's just the magic of BJJ! Good luck!

This, 100%. Age can cause this as well. I’ll be 46 in a week, and things change fast at this age. You’ve got to redefine yourself almost every couple years as you get older and wear and tear builds up on your body. If you don’t get comfortable with change, you’ll never stick with Jiu Jitsu.

That’s awesome 👏. It makes me think 💭 of what my instructor told me: you need to get submitted more - I didn’t understand it at first - now, I welcome submissions as learning opportunities.

yeah i'm one who is hard to tap out cause i do rely on power and cardio to win. but i'm slowly letting go of this (it's not easy) as i know i have to for the sake of bettering my technique... or actually having technique... Thanks for the wisdom Chewie

this lesson you put out is rlly good, i find myself doing this at jiu jitsu, i dont care if i get tapped or who I tap I just wanna progress.. for example I been getting subs by taking back and going for rear naked choke however im tryna put myself and see myself out of fcked positions like 100kg one, like you said its about not taking it too hard on yourself, embrace change and roll with it :D. If you think about it its a good mentality to apply on your daily life aswell.

What he calls identity is really his ego. He was a big fish in a small pond and now he is not. He needs to leave the ego at the door and focus on getting better and evolving.

Chewy bro, I think you are cool as shit. I watch a lot of your videos, much wisdom. Thanks for sharing your experiences and answering questions for the entire community. You have a good disposition on life it seems and BJJ. A very honorable person. Good luck to you in all you do, and continued success in your pursuits. When we are young we are 'takers'. When we grow older we are 'givers', to help others and pull them through what the wise have already experienced.

I'm a white belt myself but I've been lifting weights for 5 years so I'd like to share my opinion. Basically I think you should work on your weakness. Keep training BJJ, but if you lack cardio, do cardio outside your BJJ training, like running or skipping rope. If you're not strong enough, join a weight lifting gym and do a basic strength program like 5x5 or Wendler's 5/3/1. Put ultimately focus on your technique as much as possible.
@elaineabreu282

Going through this exact thing. I'm trying to be more technical instead of relying so much on strength. Cause I figured, there is always going to be someone stronger, specially since im a girl rolling with guys. I can't rely on strength alone. if I have very good technique, supported by strength and aggressiveness when needed I'm going to be saucesome, but yeah, getting submitted more lol and it kind of twinges me, but I'm trying to brush it off.

Hey Chewy, I'm having this problem for a while now and I hope you can help me out. I started Jiu-Jitsu at a relatively young age (14) and after 3 years I finally got my blue belt. Throughout this time I've also been competing alot, but so far I've only lost. My opponents are generally way stronger than me and they have a way better cardio than me. I feel like I just can't keep up. Don't get me wrong, I still love BJJ, but knowing that I'm not as good as the competition makes me question myself alot like "Do I need to train more" or "Do I suck at BJJ". How do I get rid of this mindset, or how do you accept that there are always people better than you? I hope you can help me out. Btw, I love your channel, keep it up.

The same happend to me. Last training was the first time I felt I didn't won any roll. I was so frustrated and angry with myself. Even tho I just got much higher belts or big guys, I feel I should have won anyways.

Chewi what if you keep both and use it to manage you in a positive way and what if you lose motivation all together it really depends why you're doing it for right?

I’m actually going through this as I write this, in a way. I’m a blue belt at my other school (Karate - Tang Soo Do, almost a black belt). I’m going to be training in both karate and Jiu Jitsu. But at my other school, I’m a “higher rank” than most. So going to Jiu Jitsu, I’m back to the white belt... the newbie... it’s a semi uncomfortable feeling. For me, the rank/belt doesn’t effect me as much as the lack of knowledge.

This is a question, So first off I dont do BJJ I do a self defense karate thing that has some grappling. Also my friend as a disability where he has one arm, and the remenents of his left arm are 2 fingers he calls bob and squishy (he was born like this btw). Anyway one day we were grappling and he was paired with a little guy, we are 12 like some of our class but he was paired with some guy who is like 7. And what happened is when they were grappling the little guy was on the bottom of a mount so what he did was just grab bob and squishy and squeeze, and he did that for like 3 minutes until my bud got a submission. Just wondering, how do me and him confront him (dont really wanna get coach involved because we dont want him suspended or whatever)

Chew when would you recommend someone to open up their game? Like this question was referring to losing their bjj identify. What other scenarios would fit?
@Chewjitsu
@Chewjitsu 6 лет назад
Think of it this way. Stimulation destroys stagnation. If you aren't constantly trying something new. Even if it's a variation of something you already do well. You'll become stagnant.
