Intro drawing by Ashley Anderson: pressstarttobegin.net/
After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

Software Creations sound designers tended to use really short notes on the regular NES sound channels to give off more complex sounds. Could be Stephen Ruddy's sound engine doing the magic.

Something tells me that those hotline experts with that sweet $2.99 a minute was pushing that "please hold while we figure this out" as much as they could. "gosh caller, give us like 10 more minutes we'll get back to ya with the solution" This game was a childhood favorite, with that epic intro music. Thanks for reviewing!

Probably this kind of games were more popular before 1990, it reminds me of many MSX games like Knight Lore or Night Shade. They had isometric view, one room one screen, puzzle based gameplay. For some reasons even those earlier games were spooky :D

Your channel is awesome! I hope you continue to be prolific with your output. Also, your voice-over audio levels are spot on! It's great that your narration isn't over the top loud or distorted. Keep up the excellent work. BTW - I noticed in another video that you have some Genesis games. Would be neat if you find the time at some point to do a rare Genesis series. Other Genesis channels cover the popular titles (just like the other NES channels).

Hey thanks so much! You’re the first person to ever compliment my voice overs so I do appreciate that. I’ve got a bunch of Genesis games, but I’m not as deep into it as I am with the NES. Just makes it a little harder for me to talk about the library with the same…authority :)

I don't remember ever seeing this game as a kid. However, around the same time this came out I did play a game on PCs called Treasure Trap that had a similar game play style. You play as like a 19th century salvage diver, solving block jumping puzzles, avoiding deep sea creatures and grabbing up goldbars in a big shipwreck. So not only are there one hit deaths, but you have to worry about finding o2 bottles around the maze so you don't run out of air. The Atari ST port I played as a kid had the worst framerate but the best music. 😆

Reminded me of the Nintendo Power Hotline! I had completely forgotten! The first NES game I beat was Kid Icarus (when I was 8 or 9 I think) and I remember the only thing I needed help with was getting through the first labyrinth, the one with Twinbellows as a boss. Funny, because it's the FIRST dungeon, but for whatever reason I just couldn't get through it. I remember the counselor gave me a "go right one room, down two rooms, etc" kind of walk thru. I ALSO remember the counselors who answered phones at the Hotline being not all that friendly? Perhaps it was the stress of talking to kids all day, but the handful of times I called the 1-800 number, I remember the counselors being kind of sarcastic and short with me. Did anyone else experience this? Perhaps it was just me. I also remember calling for help with Rygar, another one of my top 10 favorite NES games.
@BigOleWords
@BigOleWords Год назад
Haha that’s awesome you called. I can’t understand why they’d be snarky, they had such a cool job!
@ferdinandcountfathom9298
@ferdinandcountfathom9298 Год назад
@@BigOleWords see, that's what I thought. Also, wouldn't it be to their advantage to try to keep me on the phone for as long as possible? I mean, it would be kind of cruel to a little kid, but still. It's funny, because thinking about it as an adult, I'm realizing that you could only really ask the counselor certain sorts of questions. If you were having difficulty with the game, and the only solution was just get better at it, obviously they couldn't do anything. If you needed to know where a specific item was, or the route through something, that was what they were perfect for. I remember one of my friends having difficulty with the original metroid, and getting some of the locations of missile tanks from one of the counselors.

I adored this game as a kid. It took me a long to explore and memorize the layout. I did make a map, but it was terrible. I remember getting 4 pieces of the staff, but couldn't get any further. Honestly, I've never understood why people consider Solstice to be such a difficult game. It's... honestly quite easy, once you get in the right mindset. It's one of my favorite NES games of all time, and I used to beat it once per year just for the hell of it. My record was beating it in about 35 minutes, I think. And that's with no code or anything -- you don't really need one once you've figured out the layout of the castle, as it's unlikely you'll die more than maybe 3 or 4 times in your whole playthrough. The traps and puzzles are all very predictable and very avoidable once you've figured them out. The castle layout is also incredibly fun to learn, as the developers really went to great lengths to ensure that everything fit together perfectly in 3D space -- the map is so tightly designed that you could theoretically model it out IRL if you really wanted to (and had a LOT of space and materials to do it with!). The attention to detail in ensuring that everything properly connected in a realistic manner is really quite exceptional, and shows that a lot of love went into this one. Also, I've never heard of holding the controller sideways to play this game, but that sure wouldn't work for me! Isometric games of this type were super common in the European PC scene, and they all used this exact control scheme. Turning your controller sideways would... disrupt that standardized control scheme, a lot. I think you may have done yourself a disservice playing the game that way, as you'll definitely have trouble should you ever play any of the big European isometric adventure games Solstice was inspired by -- games like Batman or Head Over Heels -- or even Solstice's own sequels, Altered Space for Game Boy and Equinox for SNES, both of which use the same control setup.

I recall borrowing this game (I only owned a few NES games...they were expensive especially in that era's money...) but despite having played many similar isometric games on my Amstrad CPC (such as Head Over Heels, Batman '3D', Phantom Club, Movie etc) I couldn't get into this one. Even if it had the huge advantage of being an instant loading cartridge instead of a long loading cassette tape. :P Seems like a decent game but yeah just didn't click with me. (and ugh, Labyrinth, just had a long discussion earlier today with some friends about that supposed 'family classic' and the creepy vibe of having Bowie trying to entice a minor, after what he supposedly got up to in the 70s and 80s before he 'settled down'. Thought I was done with all that and then you mention it! I seem to recall there was an obscure NES game, actually japanese exclusive so Famicom but translation patch exists, but anyways moving on)

All is fair in love, and war, and cheating in NES games. That game looks intimidating to even me, and I DID beat Metroid on NES.

The sequel Equinox is even better

I still prefer Solstice but Equinox is pretty cool

I was waiting to see a review on this one! This is one of those I played the sequel first. It wasn’t called Solstice 2 but rather Equinox and it was on the SNES. So unless you knew the naming connection it’s easy to miss. I can tell you that although it has a few differences like an attack and a save feature, it isn’t any easier! Still uses the same death scream 😂 So if you liked one I’m sure you’ll like the other 😊

I actually think Equinox is even harder! Still very cool though.

Nintendo hotline cost that much a minute and still couldn't help? Don't suppose they could refund the cost could they?

Nope!

@@BigOleWords bleh. They should have at least like a $5 dollar coupon to send out to anyone they couldn't help. But nah, that would be too customer friendly or something and Nintendo's never been great at that. Even now, you can buy a Switch but still expect to pay full price for a five year old Zelda game while similarly celebrated games (God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon, Uncharted etc) on say, PS4 have often been available at ten bucks or less even ones newer than BotW. (no i not trying to big up Sony on pricing in a week where they've bizarrely announced a price INCREASE on the PS5... just saying Nintendo could bloody well knock down the prices of their older games... full price for five year old titles? No, thanks. )

The game is cheating by not including a shadow under the character, so it is ok to cheat back. I really resent the negative 'euro platformer' label some old school games get. It's good to see something distinctly european being received well.
@BigOleWords
@BigOleWords Год назад
Yeah agreed, especially about the need for a shadow. The iso level in Zen was smarter in it’s implementation.

Gem and Solstice *do not deserve* to be in the same sentence! Solstice is a frustrating, cryptic PoS. I used to own this game, and absolutely hated it😡I still played it, mostly out of spite, but it's a terrible game. Solstice is the equivalent of kidnapping somebody, throwing them in the middle of the Mohave Desert, and saying *THERE! NOW FIGURE OUT HOW TO ESCAPE!*

Wasn’t this ripped off from a Rare game?

Hmmm not that I know of? Rare made plenty of isometric games, but it seems more inspired by old home computer titles.

@@BigOleWords check out Knight Lore by Rare1981 back when the they were making games for British computers. It was released on Xbox One some years back as part of Rare Replay. Look like it has that same kind of isometric puzzle style
