For castlevania 3, the reason why it doesn't play properly in cloned hardware is the game's mapper.

for some reason i could never get castlevania 3 to play on several emulators, however, the japanese castlevania 3 played, plus, is a better version anyway with lot better music!

hey SOMETHING ON TOPIC. anyway, think geek made a updated retro mini. it has: •Handheld NES system plays original full-size NES cartridges and comes with wireless light gun •Headphone out jack •Includes two wireless controllers (these can be used when playing on the built-in LCD or connected to a TV) •Includes one wireless light gun zapper (this can only be used when playing on the TV. Cause people would rather have a portable console with a giant cartridge sticking out, plus a backpack full of games to lug around rather then every NES game on a sd card the size of your pinky nail. I don't really get the point of this. It would have been awesome in the 80s and 90s, heck even in the early 00's but now with all the android handhelds that can even emulate Dreamcast I don''' get why someone would want this. Just my opinion

kgp8 what do you mean? just download a ROM into the SD card and play it on your cellphone, and hook it up with a bluetooth controller and you are set go go.

its a memory card for cellphones,cameras, mp3 players, laptops, some consoles like the ps3, nintendo 3ds & playstation vita, they come in different sizes, the SD card for the 3ds, laptops and a few cameras are a standard size a little smaller than a credit card and are really cheap they can have up to 128 GB while the SD cards for the playstation vita, some most cameras, and all cellphones are about the same size as your pinky nail and can have up to 128 GB they are incredibly expensive but are very effective since they are so small.

SD cards are used to steal IP from developers and pirate games. SD cards should have root kit to prevent people from pirating games.

Mark Plott they are not, they are used to increase memory for cellphones, mp3 players, laptops and many other devices, its unfortunate that they are used for pirating games, but thats not their intended use.

He wasn’t careful with rob and he could,ve probably even have ruin it,because of those mechanical components inside it, heck it’s already hard to find a fully working rob.

Some cartridges had what was called a "MMC" chip to increase the capacity. It came in different generations, where MMC5 was the last revision, and of course the most refined one. Outside Japan, I doubt that there was any other cartridge than Castlevania 3 that used it.

I think the reason why Castlevania 3 doesn't work is because Castlevania 3 uses mappers that aren't supported. A lot of NES emulators for the PC aren't able to properly run Casltevania 3 because it doesn't support the extra mappers needed for such sophisticated NES games.

My friend has a PSP and was able to crack it (not sure exactly what he did) but he downloaded all the old sega, nes and snes games and put them on a memory card and can play them on the PSP. He had like over 200 games on it

there are several games that included extra chips that NES clones won't play, Castlevania 3 is one of them. I think there's somewhere around 75 games that they won't play.

actually if you're going by youtube accounts then AVGN was a year before IG, but AVGN started in May of 2004, so thats a ton earlier than IG.

Both AVGN and Irategamer are special in different ways. Avgn only reviews bad games while Irategamer reviews good games AND bad games.

Thanks to you Irategamer, I got my Retro Mini today! I waiting for the NES games I purchased (Super Mario Bros 1-3 and Ducktales, I might get more when I have more spending money.) I can't wait to have the abitly to play old classics I never had to experience on a NES now with a modern player!

@PKMNwww411 If you think it wasn't turned on because the light wasn't on, then you're mistaken, the light turning on means that ROB is connected with the TV, and will react when the screen flashes. There is no indication that ROB is powered on.

Castlevania III uses the MMC5 chip inside it; it only runs on the original NES, the NES 2, the Retro Entertainment System, and the Retro Duo.

The Retro Mini doesn't play Castlevania 3. There is also a small number of games it won't play, I believe the games that came out at almost the end of the NES production life.

I bought this based on your review, and I have to disagree with you about a couple things. The directional pad sucks. It's limits you to up, down, left & right for the most part since it's down in the casing. Maybe if you have thumbs like the Green Giant it's no big deal, but it made control difficult with many of my games. The wireless controlers also didn't work very well for me. Everything else is great, but they screwed up the control, which is the most important thing.

well, if you go to a hotel, for instance, after a long trip, you can hook it up to the tv instead of playing in the small screen

interesting gadget you have. I might think about getting the Pocket Retro Game Emulator someday. and I think there is a chance your videos will still be on your hard drive, as I remember having my old hardrive crashed with a new Mugen video in it .(Gohan takes on his imposter) and I was superised it was still there after the crash. so chances are, your reviews should still be in the hard drive, waitting to be posted on youtube.

just curious, but why wouldn't they just opt to make it look like a giant NES controller with a screen where there's no buttons? The back would probably be about as thick as the original gameboy.

Maybe they should do one minor change to the Retro Mini. I don't like how the Cartridge sticks so far out from the Top. Why not flip the Port Up-Side Down. That way, the Game is centered directly behind it rather then sticking out.

Castlevania III probably doesn't work in general because it uses the MMC5 mapper chip, which was the most complicated mapper, and it's hard to emulate. Castlevania III has compatibility problems with a lot of these modern NES devices. What's the battery life like on that thing?

Castlevania III contains an uncommon memory mapper chip that's incompatible with the Nintendo-On-A-Chip(NOAC) IC that make up the bulk of these Famiclone consoles on the market today. As a result Castlevania III(and a short list of others) have to be played on Authentic Nintendo hardware. However there are a few Clones out there (Retro Duo) that use original logic chips instead of a NOAC for better compatibility, and can play Castlevania III.

Many years ago, I had a URL for a portable 2600. Guy requested a 2600, an '80s Walkman TV and the royal fee of (something like) $350 and he'd make a custom, one-of-a-kind portable 2600 for you. All in all, hardly worth it.

Plugging it into the television defeats the purpose of its portability, though. Maybe I should get one of these, so I can play Captain Skyhawk or even Super Mario Brothers 1 anywhere.
