That is awesome! I have been searching to find a way to get one of these smart doorbells work exactly with my M&S dmc1 system. I really love how I can hear the doorbell in every room station and now I have to figure out a similar method. Nice Work!!

Lee, Your video/instructions worked perfectly. I have a M/S which is functioning ok. The only thing that gave me a pause was hooking up the relay, but thanks to your video all worked as you described. Only differences, I used a second transformer and a 3 watt resistor. By the way, two local electrical companies would/could not do. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback. After re-capping the power circuit in the NuTone, my system sounds like a 25 ohm paper cone speaker system from the 80's. Working okay is what I was going for. Nest to Sonos would be way better.

Duuuude. Genius! As a software engineer and not an electrical engineer, I imagine this is like figuring out a decent algorithm out of thin air, implementing it, and having it work without major bugs. Awesome, now to find someone to do it to my Nutone system in Oakland, or get a Nest Pro to follow your lead.

I liken that chime module that the Nest provided like some software you downloaded that does X, Y, and Z and you're trying to make it do A, B, and C completely counter to why the code was written... Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't...

I've learned much from your video on wiring a NEST to the Nutone IM 3003 intercom system; thank you for posting it! Here's a question about the small NEST power unit, which you surmised is a voltage doubler in your circuit. Is it possible that a video doorbell of another brand may be capable of similar application without having a small, power unit? I ask because I'm aware of two other brands --Skybell and Ring--that describe wiring their doorbells to a 2-tone, mechanical doorbell directly without a small power unit---simply wiring it in place of the original door bell button with no other modification. Is it possible that a video doorbell may be capable working this way with a mechanical door chime's electromagnet but not able to activate a relay in its place?

Yes, a device in-line could store power for itself in a capacitor and short itself at it’s power input giving the inline device (the solenoid two tone bell) the current it needs to move.

I have NuTone 3303 and it already has a 30 VA / 16 VAC transformer for the chime circuit. You guys are giving me confidence that I can get this done. I'm a mechanical engineer which makes me brave enough to try it, but still nervous. I've got the parts list, that Thuy Nguyen referenced, but I don't seem to need the transformer given what I've got in my 3303. I'm planning to get the rest of the parts and do the retrofit. Does this sound right? I measure 24 VAC out at the doorbell. Thanks in advance for the help!! Mike

After getting thru Christmas, and receiving all of the ordered parts, I did the install today in about 2 hours. It works perfectly!! Doing the connections bread-board style was a smart idea to confirm everything worked properly before soldering and trimming all the wires. I was able to use the existing transformer since it's already 30 VA. The whole deal cost me about $45 including shipping for the parts, including a new faceplate for outside. Well worth it to keep the existing Westminster chime tone from the NuTone! Nest needs to step up and formalize this as a kit now... Thanks for publishing your design sir.

Mike, I also have a 3303 (also a ME) and just ordered my Hello today. My unit has two 30 VA transformers; not sure what for. I haven't taken anything apart yet but did you need to add the extra relay or resistors? I would be interested in your exact setup so I can replicate.

I’m a dummy, but my Nutone was hooked up to a standard doorbell., with the speaker on the ceiling - but since the transformer is just 16v - 15va - it just chimes with not enough power for video. Would getting the 16V - 30Va be all I need. (Not using the Nest Chime at all - just activating Nutone chime still)?

A guess here, but do you have an NuTone intercom or just a NuTone doorbell. NuTone has made regular doorbells since 1930's...

Lee Thompson it’s the same model Nutone that you have, but they just kept a standard doorbell (once was a mechanical door chime) and it activates the Nutone chime. I briefly hooked the nest to the original door bell wires, and the light was yellow, which allowed me to ring the door bell like usual. I just don’t have enough juice for video

hi, I have a nutone LB-55. It is not an intercom system but it is an electronic doorbell with wiring for doorbell to the rear of the house (just a single bell) and one for the front of the house which is a westminister tone. I want to switch out the front door bell to a nest hello. Will your instructions work? I am assuming that they will , do you know where to purchase the relay, also can you make a more detailed video on this. I have searched and searched for a new door chime to work with the nest hello and there is some problem with all of them. I would love it if I could use your instructions and hook up my existing doorbell to the nest hello. I would even be happy to pay you to send me the kit to do this !!
@StagrLee

Follow the wire from the doorbell switch wires. When those move over to the Nest circuit from the Nutone circuit, the switch at the door is electrically replaced at the Nutone by the closing contacts of the relay (same idea as the IM3003 hack). Should be the same resistor and relay. You'll need to figure out how to power the old chime and the new Nest. If you share the transformer like I did, you will need to add fuses and upgrade the transformer. To validate the resistor choice, measure the voltage drop at the relay coil. Should be between 11 and 13 VAC. Mine was 12.2 VAC This is interesting ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u5QWNmaOKdU.html

@StagrLee
@StagrLee 5 лет назад
Without any of the Nest circuit, take a piece of scrap wire and try shorting the doorbell terminals on the NuTone's tone/ringer circuit board. If it rings then for some reason your relay isn't closing. If it doesn't ring, your problem is in the NuTone, not the Nest or the relay mod (most likely some dried up capacitors somewhere in the Nutone).

I know I am a little late to this post but I just connected my Nutone IM4406 into my Feit Video Doorbell Camera and it does not power on the Doorbell Camera. If I straight wire the Camera at the front door to the separate 24vac powering the camera it works fine. But when I wire in the relay I go from getting 24 thvrough the system to 5v... which is not enough to power on the camera... what could I be doing work... or do I maybe have a faulty relay?

Victor, please post an explanation if you gain clarity on this. I've got an M&S intercom and want to install Nest Doorbell as well. I think we've got to (1) add power with a 24 V transformer, but (2) then connect that "newly powered" nest back to the chime module after (3) a new relay and (4) a couple resistors. That said, I can't envision the circuit and order of connections, and I don't want to experiment by frying equipment....
@victorwhite1048
@victorwhite1048 4 года назад
@@jimwebber5923 I think the transformer installed is already powerful enough (24vac according to the sticker on it), and I already bought the relay that I found referenced somewhere else (URBEST HH52P AC 24V Coil DPDT 8... www.amazon.com/dp/B00NN5ABG2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share). I just need some help on how to connect it. I don't have much of an electrical background beyond simple switch outs of fixtures and switches. So will update if I get it done. In the comments of the relay on Amazon I found some guidance on how someone else wired it, so going to give it a shot.

Lee Thompson How would I get 10VA more transformer power? Edit: We also have multiple intercoms throughout the house. Would the chime work through all of them if I did this? Forgive me, my knowledge of circuitry is limited.
@StagrLee
@StagrLee 5 лет назад
Sorry for the delayed response. As shown in the video, you just need to short circuit the two connections in the Nutone to start the chime. With one Nest, you need one relay to provide the closed (short) circuit. With two nests you would wire in two relays. My Nutone has a different tone for Front/Rear doors so the second relay would short different terminals. You’d have to figure out which one. Your other question about the power. The Nest requires 10VA. To do two, you would need 20VA. I’d probably use a 30VA Nutone transformer to power both Nests and a separate transformer to power the Nutone. The Nutone at my house needs 15VA. The power requirement depends on which Nutone you have.
@waynelai2540
@waynelai2540 5 лет назад
Where are the fuses hooked onto? Is it one fuse to each wire coming off the transformer?
@StagrLee
@StagrLee 5 лет назад
Two fuses come off the same transformer terminal. This isolates the Nest from the Nutone. Since the Nutone transformers are internally regulated its probably optional but I like the extra isolation this gives. Especially considering how old the Nutone base station is. If the Nutone shorts out, the Nest Doorbell will keep chugging along.
@StagrLee
@StagrLee 6 лет назад
Interesting mod to the circuit using a 24VAC relay instead of a 12VAC relay as you can eliminate the resistor. I think this might work as the NuTone transforms seem to be over voltage. Mine was 19 VAC. It depends on what is going on inside the chime module. www.reddit.com/r/Nest/comments/8kekhz/nest_hello_can_work_on_an_intercom_system
