We also have only one gold in Olympic swimming. I am from Kazakhstan and we won 200m breaststroke event in Rio 2016 (Dmitry Balandin). But compared to Suriname our country is much bigger and therefore, of course, we have much more Olympic medals in other sports disciplines

Le me put a little perspective on WHY my country went totally crazy over this win: 8 years prior to Nesty winning the gold medal we had a miltary coup..2 years after that 15 people who went against the military dictatorship were brutally murdered. There were several attempts by other groups to take over the control of my country. It had been a very tense political climate. In 1987 elections were finally held, but everyone knew that the leader of the 1980 coup could take back the country if he wanted to, so the tense situation persisted.... and the Anthony Nesty went to the Olympics and won the gold medal.... Can you imagine the release of tension -if only for a little while - in a small country that has been through a lot of pain in 8 years..?

I live in Australia - and I remember this. We could feel the Surinam pride right across the Pacific. Nesty is a hero of his nation and an historic figure in Olympic swimming.

This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about; it wasn’t a mistake for Biondi to glide into the wall, he had timed it fairly well. It’s just that the Suriname guy timed it even better.

This channel should also produce a clip of Singapore Joseph Schooling (Swimming) too. He won Singapore first ever gold medal in Olympic record in the Rio Olympics. He should be also remembered for denying the Great Michael Phelps of a perfect clean sweep of 6 Olympic gold medals.

This puts the Philippines a country known for being a media attention craving country ..into its ultimate shame...as it was bested by a country that as the narrator has put it...a modest country...Suriname...wherein 90% of Filipinos don't even knew that such a country exist...I salute Suriname for being that humble nation...WHO DOES NOT CRAVE FOR WORLDWIDE ATTENTION...and that pure talent speaks for itself....and the whole world was compelled to notice this small country into its respectable recognition

Looking at how they treated Nesty back in his home country is basically how Singapore treats Joseph Schooling LMAO
@Pekkooooooo
@Pekkooooooo 5 лет назад
COINCIDENTLY ENOUGH THE SITUATION IS really similar, their home country had no Olympic medals at all. Then the previous Olympic Games before their gold, they lost pretty badly but still went overseas to train. Came back in 4 years and got gold against legends of swimming. So that’s weird, I think our programmer got lazy 🤭

I just love a great underdog story! Especially when no one thinks he poses a threat! And then WHAM! Just when they think the prize is won, here comes that determined, hard-working, don't give up until you past that finish line underdog to take the gold!!!

3:23 I think it was a mistake by Biondi, like the commentator said during 3:50 : Biondi decided to glide, instead of doing one more stroke.
@schusterlehrling
@schusterlehrling 3 года назад
So Biondi could not make an additonal stroke in his finish. Nesty was simply stronger and faster.

In America, we don't get shocked or excited about winning... Because we're used to it! But then again, I don't know how I'd feel if I lived in a small economy like Suriname. I'd probably lose my head for the best. Just saying.

Well. You guys lost your head about your 'first black president'. Coming from a small country like Suriname I really don't see the big deal, or why you're all so hung up on ethnicity, race, whatever you wanna call it. But i guess if I were from a country that forgot almost ALL the people were originally immigrants and can't accept that culturally you're american (granted with something on the side) then I'd lose my head too.
